Scapegrace Gin from New Zealand Joins 375 Park Avenue Spirits Portfolio

By | Mixology News

375 Park Avenue Spirits Appointed U.S. Importer for Rogue Society Distilling Company’s Scapegrace Gin from New Zealand.

Superior brand specialist, 375 Park Avenue Spirits, has announced that it has come to an agreement with the Rogue Society Distilling Company to act as the exclusive U.S. importer for their Scapegrace gin portfolio.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be working with 375 Park Avenue Spirits as our exclusive distribution partner in the U.S.  We feel our company values, ethos and strategy are very much aligned and we’re really excited about the partnership ahead. The U.S. is such an important market for us and to have 375 Park Avenue on board to represent Scapegrace is a real game changer for our young company.”
– Daniel McLaughlin, Rogue Society Distilling Co. Managing Director

Scapegrace, known as the “gin from the bottom of the world,” is produced on New Zealand’s South Island using water sourced from one of the world’s last natural aquafers, fed from the country’s Southern Alps. The botanicals are distilled using neutral grain spirit in a restored 19th century copper pot still found in an abandoned shed. Master Distiller John Fitzpatrick uses 12 botanicals for Scapegrace Classic (juniper berries, lemon peel, orange peel, coriander seeds, cardamom pods, nutmeg, cloves, angelica root, licorice root, orris root, cinnamon sticks, and cassia bark), and a thirteenth for the navy strength Scapegrace Gold expression (dried tangerine).

Launched in early 2014 by co-founders Daniel Mclaughlin, Mark Neal and Richard Bourke, the award-winning Scapegrace is currently the number one super-premium gin in New Zealand, number two ultra-premium gin in Australia, and since launching in the UK, Scapegrace has already positioned itself in the majority of the top 50 cocktail bars in the country including Dandelyan, Swift, Bramble and The Gibson.

“We developed our recipe with bartenders in mind to be versatile in classic cocktails. Our profile is classically citrus and super smooth, and we’re stoked to have just won a Double Gold medal for Scapegrace Gold and a Silver medal for Scapegrace Classic at the 2018 San Francisco Spirits Competition. From a brand sense, Scapegrace provides a modern and progressive lens to the somewhat traditional category of gin.”
– Daniel Mclaughlin

“We’re ecstatic to be welcoming the newest member to the 375 Park Avenue Spirits family, Scapegrace Gin, and to be embarking on a long-term partnership with the team from Rogue Society Distilling Co. Despite being early in its brand life cycle Scapegrace has already achieved sizable international success and we are poised to make the U.S. the next country on that list. The super to ultra-premium gin category continues to experience sizable growth here in the U.S. and we’re confident that Scapegrace will quickly become one of the new rising stars in the category.”
– Jason Schladenhauffen, President and COO for 375 Park Avenue Spirits

Scapegrace, which means “rogue,” “rascal” or “free-spirited” is presented in a black-tinted bottle inspired by 19th century antique genever containers.  The black tint protects the liquid inside and is a nod to gin’s somewhat murky history over the years. Handcrafted and batch distilled, each bottle also features its batch number on the label strip over the capsule.

Scapegrace gin is bottled at 42.2% abv with a suggested retail price of $36.99, while the navy strength Scapegrace Gold is bottled at 57% abv with a suggested retail price of $59.99. Both offerings will be available from 375 Park Avenue Spirits beginning June 1, 2018.

Gin Gone Wild on Vancouver Island

By | Mixology News

Gin Gone Wild on Vancouver Island, featured image

North of the border micro-distilleries are churning out travel-worthy gins.

Stellar west coast craft distilleries abound in the U.S. such as California’s St. George Distillery and Washington’s Dry Fly. And the trend has now migrated north. British Columbia, Canada’s western most province, is booming with new farm-to-flask booze makers.

In 2012, there were eight micro distilleries in B.C.. Today, there are 29 with more opening on the horizon. Due to a quicker turn-around time (versus whisky) and endless possible variations, gins are the predominant spirit being produced here.

Last fall, I took a road trip through Vancouver Island to see the breathtaking scenery, surf in the freezing Pacific Ocean and sample the bounty of new craft spirits. I recommend bringing an extra suitcase for all those drinkable souvenirs you’ll sample. (Due to legal reasons, B.C. adult beverages aren’t available in the States.) From a farmhouse in Duncan to a brewery-turned-distillery in Victoria, here are a few of my favorite small batch gins on Vancouver Island:

Phillips Brewery Fermentorium, Victoria, B.C.

Matt Phillips, one of the city’s most fun-loving craft beer makers, launched his first spirit in May 2015. Stump Coastal Forest Gin, with a wooden label, is infused with B.C.-grown botanicals, such as juniper, cascade hops, grand fir, bay laurel, coriander and lavender. The Fermentorium offers tastings of Stump gin and other artisanal drinks, such as seasonal brews, tonics and hops bitters. Hot tip: don’t miss checking out the colorful organ that makes music by blowing air over empty beer bottles when the keys are played.

Victoria Spirits, Victoria, B.C.

As one of the granddaddies of the B.C. craft gin distilling movement dating back to 2008, Victoria Spirits proudly calls itself “Canada’s First Premium Gin” with their Vic Gin. Made by hand, the signature juniper-forward gin features note of cardamom, citrus and rose petals. Make reservations in advance to visit the family farm and distillery for a tour and tasting by master distiller, Peter Hunt. Beyond the Oaken Gin, an amber-colored gin aged in new American oak barrels, request to sample their Left Coast Hemp Vodka and Craigdarroch Whisky.

Merridale Ciderhouse & Craft Distillery, Cobble Hill, B.C.

Located on an apple farm, Merridale is Canada’s largest producer of craft ciders. Along with their delicious pomme bubbly, they also make apple brandy, apple fortified wines, and a myriad of spirits. Lucky for gin fans, Merridale’s newest creations are Cowichan Gin, released this summer, and an aged gin—the Cowichan Copper Gin—released November 2015. The base spirit is fermented from a variety of local fruits including apples, pears and cherries and then infused with 47 botanicals. Tastings and tours are available daily, including cool on-property yurt stays in the summer.

Ampersand Distilling Co, Duncan, B.C.

Operated by Jessica and Jeremy, a handsome millennial couple, on a five-acre farm, Ampersand represents the epitome of hip, new wave distillers flush with passion for local ingredients. Handmade from organic B.C. wheat, Ampersand’s gin—ideal for vodka lovers with its juniper-light notes—is sold at the local Saturday farmers market and featured in a slew of bars throughout Vancouver Island. Distillery tours—and you’ll want to see the unique coil-system still designed by Jeremy and his dad (both engineers by trade) in person, are by appointment only.

Arbutus Distillery, Nanaimo, B.C.

Biochemist-turned-distiller Michael Pizzitelli likes to do things a little different. The bottles that house his absinthe, gin and vodka are works of art unto themselves. For example, the bottle of Coven, his B.C. wheat-based vodka, glows in the dark. For London dry style gin lovers, Empiric Gin is a tasty twist on the classic style with lemon verbena, rosemary and lavender botanicals. Visit Arbutus distillery, located in an industrial part of town, for complimentary tastings and chats with Pizzitelli and his sister as they wax seal or label each bottle by hand.

Shaw-Ross International Importers, LLC Inks Deal with JAJA Spirits, LLC to Launch New, Premium Tequila.

Shaw-Ross International Importers has announced an agreement with JAJA Spirits to introduce a new, premium Tequila. Elliot Tebele is the founder and creative mind behind the widely popular social media platform Jerry Media, which boasts more than 50 million followers.

Pronounced “HAHA” in English, the brand will initially offer two expressions, Blanco and Reposado, both made with 100% Agave Azul. Blanco will have a suggested retail price of $39.99 and Reposado at $49.99 per 750ml bottle.

– Scott Jove, Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Shaw-Ross

JAJA Premium Tequila Blanco, bottle on white

JAJA Premium Tequila Blanco

“We created a brand that is unpretentious, colorful, and with an essence which is inspired by artists to the likes of Matisse, and Mark Rothko. The goal was to change the way people think and look at Tequila. Over the past several years, the perception of the Tequila spirit has really elevated itself. As brands emerged, they all had a similar archaic vibe—we totally flipped the script, and went with a light, cool, eco-friendly approach.”
– Elliot Tebele, Founder of Jerry Media and Co-Founder of JAJA Spirits

“We want everything about JAJA to be fun. Even our name, JAJA, which is an exclamation of laughter in Spanish is conveying our core beliefs; Smile, Laugh, Celebrate.”
– Martin Hoffstein, Co-Founder of JAJA Spirits

Maurice Tebele said the small batch tequilas are produced eco-friendly, are gluten-free and distilled three times in separate copper lined pot stills for a smooth, distinguished finish.

“We have taken a hands-on approach at our distillery in Jalisco, to ensure that everything about the production process adheres to our specifications. From slow cooking to natural fermentation, triple distillation, and aging, all of these processes must be precise and consistent—so we have boots on the ground making sure of it.”
– Maurice Tebele, President of JAJA Spirits

“Aside from the quality of the tequila there is a remarkable marketing opportunity with Jerry Media’s massive social media influence,” said Jove. Jerry Media has extensive experience promoting spirits and we’re confident the introduction of JAJA Tequila will be a home run.”
– Scott Jove, Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Shaw-Ross

Tebele said JAJA will partner with Drizly, the world’s largest online alcohol marketplace, as its e-commerce partner.

“We are excited to partner with JAJA Tequila to help launch and grow their brand. What the Jerry Media team has accomplished in the digital world is extraordinary and their product is top notch. Combining our strengths should jumpstart their launch, which we have every reason to believe will be a big success.”
– Taylor Burton, Drizly VP Strategic Partnerships

Jove said they anticipate the tequilas on shelves mid-summer, 2018.

Strongbow Offers Apple Rosé and a Bouquet for Mother’s Day

By | Mixology News

Apple Rosé and a Bouquet for Mother's Day, 6 pack and bouquet, featured image

While it’s tradition to honor mothers with flowers on Mother’s Day, Strongbow aims to refresh the tradition by adding Rosé to the bouquet.

In a promotion running April 3rd through June 4th, Strongbow Rosé Apple is giving consumers the chance to pair this refreshing new flavor with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. With “Make Her Day with a Bouquet and Rosé,” shoppers seeking to delight Mom on her special day can text ROSE to 55755 to receive offer details and an $8 rebate on Strongbow Rosé Apple with the purchase of flowers where legal.

The promotion is geared to give participating retailers a boost to sales in the run up to Mother’s Day. Retailers who put Strongbow on display during this period in 2017 experienced +31% sales lift versus the same period in 2016[1]. Further, over 20% of annual floral sales occur during the Mother’s Day period[2]. The combination of Strongbow Rosé Apple—already the brand’s #1 rate of sale item at its top national customer, and the #2 rosé cider in the Northeast and in Texas[3]—and flowers, makes this a special gift for mothers.

Sales momentum is building as the brand specifically targets wine drinkers who are driving a +45% year on year growth in rosé wine sales.[4] Rosé Apple is significantly exceeding expectations with demand +50% above forecast. With many top media outlets including, Bustle, Refinery 29 and USA Today saying Summer 2018 will be the summer of Rosé Hard Cider, the rose craze is expected to continue.

“Not only is Strongbow driving the trend of rosé cider, Strongbow Rosé Apple will be one of the big winners. Why? For one, with 14% fewer calories than the other two nationally-distributed rosé ciders, and 35% less carbs per bottle it unites the rosé trend with the wellness trend. Beyond that, our rosé will benefit from a massive mini-can sampling push, with nearly 7MM mini-cans planned for this year, 40% more than last year.”
– Eric Markus, Strongbow Brand Director

Apple Rosé and a Bouquet for Mother's Day, bouquet and 6 pack bottles

Apple Rosé and a Bouquet for Mother’s Day

Strongbow Rosé Apple is reminiscent of a rosé wine but with a more refreshing taste and 50% less sugar than the leading cider[5]. It’s a semi-dry apple and pear cider blend with a touch of red-fleshed apple for a light, fruity flavor. Strongbow Rosé Apple, along with all Strongbow products, contains no artificial flavors or colors and is available in 6-pack, 11.2 oz. bottles, the Strongbow Variety 12-pack and, for a limited time, 5.1 oz. mini cans. A perfect gift for Mother’s Day.

Ballast Point Releases Cocktail-Inspired Moscow Mule Ale

Moscow Mule Ale

San Diego brewery introduces new sour beer just in time for summer.

San Diego-based Ballast Point®, one of the nation’s leading craft breweries, has introduced their new Moscow Mule Ale nationwide—the brewery’s first nationally distributed cocktail-inspired beer.

Moscow Mule Ale was born from Ballast Point’s R&D program and quickly became a fan favorite at the brewery’s tasting rooms. The 10 percent ABV ale is a tart and refreshing beer version of the classic cocktail. Loaded with lime zest and ginger over a kettle-soured base beer, Moscow Mule Ale tantalizes the taste buds with tangy and effervescent flavors, finishing with a hint of spice from the ginger.

“The flavor profile of this beer is really unique. It tastes just like a cocktail, but it’s in fact beer. Our brewing team hit it out of the park with this one. Moscow Mule Ale is a prime example of how R&D brewing has fueled innovation and allowed Ballast Point to bring new, quality beers to the market. The brewery currently makes over 100 unique R&D recipes a year, each with innovation and quality in mind.”
– James Murray, Vice President of Brewing at Ballast Point

“The brewers at our Little Italy R&D brewery developed the Moscow Mule Ale after testing out a number of other cocktail-inspired brews like the Old Fashioned and Irish Coffee. The Moscow Mule Ale was a runaway favorite among the team and our tasting room customers, making it an easy decision to share it with the rest of the country.”
– Aaron Justus, Director of R&D/Specialty Brewing

The scaled-up beer is now brewed out of Ballast Point’s newest facility, called the Trade Street brewery, which opened late last year and specializes in sour and barrel-aged beers. The new facility has already produced award-winning beers, such as the Sour Wench Blackberry Ale, which won a Silver medal in the Fruited American-Style Sour Ale category at the 2017 Great American Beer Festival® (no gold medal was awarded).

Moscow Mule Ale is a spring/summer limited release under Ballast Point’s Explorer series and is now rolling out nationwide in both draft and 12 oz. bottles through July, 2018.

Brand Wins Best in Show Liqueur, Best Herbal and Botanical Liqueur, and a Rare Double Gold medal.

Amaro Montenegro, Italy’s most popular and iconic amaro brand with more than 130 years of history and heritage, was recognized for its superior quality and taste at the 2018 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Amaro Montenegro received three of the highest honors: the coveted Best in Show Liqueur award, Best Herbal and Botanical Liqueur, as well as the rare and prestigious Double Gold medal in the Herbal and Botanical Liqueurs category—an honor bestowed only when members of the esteemed panel of judges unanimously award a Gold medal designation based on a blind tasting.

“It is a great honor to be recognized as one of the top spirits brands in the world, and proof that the unique and authentic Amaro Montenegro recipe, which has been carefully protected over the years, truly stands the test of time. We look forward to proving our excellence for years to come, as consumers continue to embrace amaro as their spirit of choice.”
– Marco Ferrari, CEO, Gruppo Montenegro

This acknowledgement follows Amaro Montenegro’s recent Gold medal in the Bitters—Digestive (Potable) category at the 2017 International Wine and Spirit Competition, an organization that promotes and rewards the quality and excellence of the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs, reinforcing the brand’s positon among the top amaros in the world.

“Throughout the world, Amaro Montenegro has a long-standing reputation for providing exceptional quality. As we expand into new markets, we believe this distinguished recognition as a superior liqueur will encourage new consumers to explore drinking occasions with Amaro Montenegro.”
– Rob Cullins, North American Regional Director, Gruppo Montenegro

Amaro Montenegro is a 130-year-old amaro that is born of extraordinary experiences and baptized by irreverence. The award-winning bitter-sweet flavor of Amaro Montenegro begins with the cultivation and extraction of 40 botanicals collected from around the globe, preserved at a controlled temperature and humidity, and crushed only moments before they enter the extraction phase. Three different methods are used to extract the essence of each botanical: boiling, maceration, and distillation to create Amaro Montenegro’s signature blend. This process is overseen by Master Herbalist, Dr. Matteo Bonoli, who oversees every batch just as the brand’s founder, Stanislao Cobianchi, did back in 1885.
