Partnership Supports Therapeutic Retreat Programs.

This year marks the 5th anniversary of the partnership between RumChata and Lone Survivor Foundation (LSF). To celebrate, each Freedom Bottle featured a label featuring the Lone Survivor Foundation logo.

The Freedom Bottle Program has raised more than $750,000 over the past five years for Lone Survivor Foundation’s mission to restore, empower, and renew hope for wounded veterans and their families through health, wellness, and therapeutic support. During that time, over 800 veterans and military family members have attended LSF’s therapeutic retreat programs, thanks in large part to RumChata’s generous support.

“The RumChata Foundation is proud to support the Lone Survivor Foundation through its annual Freedom Bottle Program. We are excited to see the funding being put to work for our veterans and their families and provide great LSF programs to support their lives.”

4 Refreshing Summer Scotch Cocktails

By | Mixology News

Once Around The Track, featured image

Smoky, peaty, and with a natural warming burn, Scotch generally spikes in popularity during cooler seasons.

But limiting Highland (and Highland-inspired) spirits to the months after Labor Day misses the opportunity to balance Scotch’s distinctive notes with refreshing and surprisingly flattering ingredients like citrus, banana, and warm-weather herbs. If you’re ready to make Scotch an all-season sipper, try one of these summer cocktails from top bartenders throughout the country.

Backyard BBQ Collins

Backyard BBQ Collins

Backyard BBQ Collins

By Ivy Mix (Leyenda, Brooklyn, NY)

The smoke notes in Scotch’s flavor profile make it a natural pairing for barbecued meats, and celebrated Brooklyn bartender Ivy Mix uses BBQ as a jumping-off point for her Scotch-centric spin on the Tom Collins.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 parts Single Malt Scotch (Ivy Recommends Laphroaig Select)
  • 3/4 parts Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 part Orange Juice
  • 1/2 part Vanilla Syrup*
  • 3/4 parts Cherry Heering Liqueur
  • 1 dash Angostura Bitters
  • Light Lager Beer
  • Lemon Wheel (for Garnish)

Preparation: Combine all ingredients except lager beer in a cocktail shaker and strain into a Collins glass with fresh ice. Top with lager beer and garnish with a lemon wheel.

*Vanilla Syrup

Combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and 1 vanilla bean in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Let cool and strain.

Shoulder Monkey

Shoulder Monkey

Shoulder Monkey

By Dan Williams (The Darling Oyster Bar, Charleston, SC)

Williams and his team draw significant inspiration from classic tiki cocktails, but when Williams started experimenting with grilled pineapple in his drinks, he discovered that the smoky flavor made a better match for Scotch. This tropical-themed libation, named in honor of Williams’ preferred Scotch brand, balances the sweetness of fruit with an appealing earthiness.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz. Blended Malt Scotch (Dan Recommends Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch Whisky)
  • 1 oz. Sage Syrup*
  • 1/4 oz. Lemon Juice
  • 1/4 oz. Orgeat
  • Fresh Sage (for Garnish)

Preparation: Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and serve in a coupe glass with fresh sage. *Sage syrup: Pulse grilled pineapple and a few springs of sage in a blender until combined. In a saucepan, bring 1 cup water and 1 cup brown sugar to a boil. Let cool, then blend with pineapple and sage until smooth. Strain and store in a clean bottle.

Gingered Scotch & Mint Highball

Gingered Scotch & Mint Highball

Gingered Scotch & Mint Highball

By Johnny Swet (JIMMY at the James, NYC)

Swet fully believes in Scotch’s potential for midsummer drinking, telling Chilled, “Scotch can easily become a warm-weather sipper when you use it in a tall, cool, and refreshing cocktail. Sip this Gingered Scotch & Mint Highball poolside or on a breezy rooftop bar, and you’ll change your mind about Scotch being a winter spirit.”

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices Fresh Ginger
  • 8-10 Fresh Mint Leaves
  • 2 oz. Blended Scotch Whisky (Johnny Uses Pig’s Nose Blended Scotch Whisky)
  • 1/2 oz. Honey Syrup
  • 1/2 oz. Lime Juice
  • Ginger Ale (to Top)
  • Mint Sprigs (for Garnish)
  • Lime Wheel (for Garnish)

Preparation: In a tin, muddle the ginger and fresh mint leaves. Add the Scotch, honey syrup, and lime juice, then shake with ice until chilled. Strain into a tall Collins glass, add ice, then stir in ginger ale. Garnish the cocktail with the mint sprigs and lime wheel.

Bars Gear Up for Manhattan Month this October

By | Mixology News

White Truffle Manhattan, featured image

San Diego’s The Whiskey House, home to California’s largest and the nation’s third-largest whiskey collection (with over 2,500 diverse bottles) is gearing up for Manhattan Month this October.

The bar’s one-of-a-kind White Truffle Manhattan, infused in-house with imported truffles and topped with real gold flakes, is an elevated twist on the classic drink.

The iconic San Diego drinking destination imports Italian white Alba truffles (when in season) at a staggering price of over $2,000 per pound, shaves them thin, and infuses Rittenhouse Rye 100 Proof Whiskey with the unmistakably rich truffle flavor. After letting it sit for two weeks, whiskey connoisseurs strain and bottle the specialty-infused whiskey. A rich depth of flavor coats the tongue from the artful combination of the truffle-infused whiskey, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters, maraschino cherry garnish, and real 24K gold flakes!

Coming off his Fake Believe stand-up tour, magician and comedian Justin Willman’s new special Magic for Humans just released on Netflix.

The six half-hour episodes dive into Netflix’s first original foray into the magic space, and follow Willman as he brings his skills as a magician to the strange and misunderstood subcultures of America.

Born in St. Louis, Willman currently lives in Los Angeles, and is a magician member at the infamous Magic Castle. Since starting his career, Willman has been a consultant and writer for film/television productions like America’s Got Talent, The Goldbergs, Love, and Disney’s upcoming feature film Magic Camp.

Willman has made multiple appearances on The Tonight Show, Ellen, Conan, and @Midnight. He’s performed live at the White House for the first family, his online videos have racked up over 50 million views, and his debut comedy/magic special Sleight of Mouth premiered on Comedy Central to rave reviews. The LA Times has called him, “A new breed of comic who’s making magic cool again for grown-ups.” and Time Out says his live show, “Has to be seen to be disbelieved.”

Tell us a bit about the projects you are working on.

I have a new series out on Netflix called Magic for Humans. It’s a comedy show where I use the art of magic to demystify the human condition. My plan was to disguise social experiments as street magic in hopes of answering life’s big questions, but I think I know less now than when I started. Us humans are quite a mystery.

I also tour constantly with my live show, so unless you live in Billings, Montana there’s a good chance I’ll be in your neck of the woods at some point soon. (Call me Billings!)

With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your downtime?

I’m lucky that my hobby became my profession. But that also means that most of my time not performing is spent nerding out on magic and coming up with new tricks. The magic brain never turns off.

I do love me some dogs though. My two rescue pit bulls Betty and Stella are an irresistible distraction. I could watch them spoon and be weird for hours. Still haven’t worked them into the act, yet.

When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

I’ve never met a cuisine I don’t like. I eat everything. Sushi is a staple for me, so when I’m in LA I end up at Sugarfish at least a couple times a month. Mercado in LA is the best Mexican-gourmet-witchcraft around, just typing their name makes me crave the pork. And being a Missouri boy I need my BBQ … St. Louis style of course. Boneyard in Sherman Oaks always delivers.

Do you cook?

Before I got married the only thing I knew how to cook was Trader Joe’s pot stickers. And don’t get me wrong, that’s some tasty-ass bachelor cuisine. However, my wife’s affinity for “non-frozen-foods” has led me to branch out. Thanks to our Blue Apron subscription, I’ve cooked meals that you’d swear were made by a former Food Network host.

What types of drinks do you order when out?

If I’m sitting down for a savory dinner, I usually order a Dirty Tito’s Martini. (USA! USA!) But if I’m at a bar or somewhere that might require walking (martini glasses are not my friend), I’ll order a Jameson on the rocks. If it’s after 11pm, make that a Laphroaig with one rock. I love me some peaty Islay scotch … it’s like chewing on a campfire.

Do you prepare drinks at home?

My wife and I recently started making Old Fashioneds at home. She’s way better at it than I am. If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll make Martinis for everyone. But I still haven’t figured out how to go easy on the olive juice. My Martinis always end up dirty AF.

Chillin' with Justin Willman

Chillin’ with Justin Willman

Do you own a home bar?

We have a very petite and stylish bar cart in the dining room that displays the pretty bottles, but the real liquor source are the giant handles of vodka in the freezer. Shhh.

What is your favorite drink/cocktail?

The best magician at the Magic Castle in Hollywood is Mike Pisciotta. Posing as an unassuming bartender in the basement he serves patrons their drinks then casually begins a performance that without fail blows everyone’s minds. He’s a charming master of sleight of hand and I love nothing more than watching people watch him. He also makes one hell of an Old Fashioned that is easily as good as his second deal.

Have you ever been a bartender?

Always a bar patron, never a bartender. 🙁

RÅVO Vodka Stays True to its Origins

By | Mixology News

RÅVO Vodka, bottle on white, featured image

RÅVO, a name derived from the Swedish words for “raw” and “vodka,” stays true to its origins and is crafted from pure, all-natural Swedish winter wheat—a strain of the grain that is planted in autumn and remains in the vegetative phase throughout the cold winter temperatures of Sweden.

This wheat requires exposure to freezing or near freezing temperatures to trigger the reproductive stage for the next season. The resulting yield makes for an excellent flavor and has proven to make great-tasting vodka.

RÅVO Vodka, bottle on white

RÅVO Vodka

The Reppe distillery, where RÅVO is made, is located in the county of Västergötland, a bucolic area of rural Sweden set on the edge of one of the cleanest water sources in the country. Used to blend RÅVO, this water is sourced from a local spring and then treated via reverse osmosis. Like most water sources in Sweden, this liquid is very high quality and can be described as a fresh and soft character.

Scoring 94 points on Wine Enthusiast, the founders wanted to take Sweden’s winter wheat and turn it into an uncomplicated affordable vodka to be enjoyed on the rocks or in cocktails. It’s a spirit that provides a clean canvas, one that can and should be manipulated to suit individual tastes and preferences.

RÅVO (SRP $20) is gluten-free, non-GMO, and Kosher certified. For more information, visit RavoVodka.com.

The Last Drop Distillers Releases Exquisite 50 Year Old Single Malt

By | Mixology News

The Last Drop Distillers Exquisite 50 Year Old Single Malt

A Showcase of the Golden Age of Distilling from this Legendary Speyside Distillery.

The Last Drop Distillers, the world’s most exclusive spirits collection, has announced the debut of its first Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch Whisky release: a remarkable offering comprising two Single Casks, both distilled and filled on the same day: November 19th, 1968. Guided by their expert noses and instincts, the team has spent years traveling around the world, in search of the perfect and rare dram worthy of The Last Drop name.

This unique and highly sought after bottling of this glorious Single Malt is from the celebrated Glenrothes Distillery, deep in the heart of the majestic Speyside region. Home to one of the most acclaimed Single Malt Scotch Whiskies in the world, the Glenrothes 1968 is only The Last Drop Distillers’ second Single Malt release—and the first from Speyside. The two casks have both spent their lives maturing for almost fifty years since 1968, having remained untouched until they were discovered and bottled by The Last Drop Distillers. The first has yielded just 168 bottles and the second 141 bottles, totaling only 309 bottles for the entire release. Those few, lucky enough to purchase this special release will not have a choice in which cask their bottle comes from; they will either get the single malt from cask 13504 or from cask 13508.

Single malt Scotch Whiskies are made entirely from malted barley and each cask is the result of the distillation on one date: in this case November 19th, 1968. However, such is the magic and alchemy between liquid and wood, that each of these casks is distinctly different, in spite of the similarities and shared characteristics that epitomize the notes of ripe fruit, citrus, creamy vanilla and hints of exotic spice for which Glenrothes is famed.

“We are thrilled to be launching our second single malt. We have known for some time that there is a real appetite for rare casks from Glenrothes—it’s a favorite distillery for many of our fans and customers. While we remain true champions of the magic and majesty of blended Scotch Whisky, we could not turn down the opportunity to acquire these exceptional casks, and to present them within one release.”
– Beanie Espey, The Last Drop’s Director of Sales and Marketing

The Last Drop Distillers Exquisite 50 Year Old Single Malt

The Last Drop Distillers Exquisite 50 Year Old Single Malt

A rare taste of the art of distilling as it was fifty years ago, the casks that make up The Last Drop’s 12th release: Glenrothes 1968 Single Malt Scotch Whisky release reveal their own characteristics, here brought to life by celebrated whisky expert, writer and educator, Charles Maclean:

Single cask 13508 Speyside malt:
“A slight prickle on the nose and a complex, mellow aroma which is at once fruity and herbal—crystallised greengages, dusty dried mixed herbs—with an elusive whiff of scented smoke, a trace of cigar boxes and after a while a hint of candle wax.”

141 bottles. 50.2% ABV
With great pleasure and pride, The Last

Single cask 13504 Speyside malt:
“A mellow nose-feel, with slight prickle after a while. The highly perfumed initial aroma—scented hand-cream, attar of roses, carnations—reduces in time, infused by notes of almond oil and oak shavings, with a trace of vanilla. A drop of water enhances the wood notes.”

168 bottles. 51.8% ABV

Rebecca Jago says, “Each of the casks tastes distinctly different, while also displaying all the hallmarks of the classic Glenrothes distillery: imagine a pair of non-identical twins. We each have our favorite, but won’t be saying who prefers which one! We are truly excited to be launching this—and even more excited that we have already secured the liquid for two further releases from subsequent years.”

With only 309 sets available worldwide, of which only 50 bottles of each cask will reach North America, this 1968 Single Malt Scotch Whisky is an extremely rare bottling of two individual casks of this glorious whisky from Glenrothes. Each bottle, together with its signature 50ml miniature replica, nestles in the creamy, soft suede lining of a hand-made red leather case. Together with the miniature is a certificate of bottling and a pocket-sized tasting book with additional blank pages to write and share personal tasting notes as this exceptional Scotch Whisky is tasted.

In 2019 and 2020, two further Glenrothes releases from 1969 and 1970 will follow, completing a unique Glenrothes trilogy of wonderful whiskies.

The Last Drop Glenrothes 1968 Single Malt Scotch Release is a continuing testament to the company’s core founding principles; to seek out only the precious ‘last drops’ of some of the oldest and most exceptional spirits in existence. And while the objective is simple, it is by no means easy, as is apparent from the 50 YO Glenrothes release and each one that came before—every Last Drop offering is the result of a rigorous journey to uncover the world’s finest and rarest gems for a once in a lifetime tasting experience.

The release has an SRP of US $6,250. Details of stockists can be found at LastDropDistillers.com/Stockists.
