Must Mix: Perseid Meteor Shower Van Gogh Vodka Cocktails

Must Mix: Perseid Meteor Shower Van Gogh Vodka Cocktails, featured image

On August 12, 2018, The Perseid Meteor Shower, the most dazzling nighttime event of summer, will peak. It’s the perfect excuse to enjoy a sparkling cocktail (or two) under the stars!

One of Vincent Van Gogh’s most iconic works is his Starry Night painting, a masterpiece that Van Gogh Vodka pays homage to on their flagship 80 proof Van Gogh Vodka bottle. What better way to celebrate the Perseids then by sipping on one of the Van Gogh sparkling cocktails?

Some facts about the Perseid Meteor Shower:

  • The Perseid is the most popular meteor shower of the year for the Northern Hemisphere and will peak the nights of August 11-12 and 12-13.
  • During these dates, between 60-70 meteors per hour will be visible under the right conditions; in peak years that number can rocket upwards of 150 meteors per hour.
  • While difficult to see in locations that have a lot of ambient light, the consensus is if you can see each star of the Little Dipper, your eyes have “dark adapted,” and you should be able to view the shower.
  • Meteors, also known as “shooting stars” and “falling stars,” are created when bits of debris from asteroids and comets enter the Earth’s atmosphere and begin to glow as they heat up from friction.

Tips for watching a meteor shower:

Astronomer Dr. Aparna Venkatesan, Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of San Francisco, has the following tips for enjoying the night sky during meteor showers and while star gazing:

  • Stay up past midnight—showers peak between midnight and dawn.
  • No telescopes or binoculars needed—just a wide unobstructed field of view of the sky.
  • As one gazes at the sky for a while, a blanket or chair to relax on are great so as not strain your neck while craning back and looking up.
  • After identifying the area of the sky from which the meteors will appear to be coming from, relax your eyes and look away slightly as your peripheral vision will be great at picking up the streaks.
  • Try to find a location that is as dark as possible (minimal light pollution) and has a good chance of clear skies/good weather. Added bonuses are high elevation locations and dry (desert or mountain-like) conditions.
  • Having the moon phase not full helps sky-viewing immensely. The ideal moon phase is between new and first quarter.
  • Dress warm enough for nighttime temperatures.

Complement the starry night sky with one of these sparkling cocktails.

Chilled Drink of the Week: Darling Cocktail

By | Mixology News

Darling

The Flavors of Summer with Schladerer Pear Brandy.

I’ve always believed in simplicity when creating cocktails: “Less is more,” as they say. Too often I see and taste cocktails with so many ingredients in them that flavors become lost and muddied.

One of the things I learned early on in my career was that a lot of the spirits and liqueurs we love mixing with are not only perfectly delicious when consumed on their own, but are also meant to be enjoyed that way—as aperitifs, digestifs, and medicines, rooted in the cultures of the places they’re produced. Mixing is our culture, but with ingredients this good, the hard work has already been done; I simply had to layer a few things together to highlight the Williams-Birne.

Pear has an affinity for nutty flavors and is a perfect match for Palo Cortado, whose saltiness also tampers some of the natural sweetness of the pear brandy. Adding orgeat and salt further highlights the pairing, and when finished with some effervescence, becomes a light and easy summer sipper.

Featured genres and artists include:

  • Blue Glaze Mento Band – Sweet Jamaica (Mento)
  • Christopher Martin – Fun Time Gain (Ska)
  • J-Summa – Keeping it Up (Pop/Dancehall) – Lead single

Red Stripe officially previewed the first single from the album in a live debut performance from reggae and SKA sensation, Christopher Martin at Wynwood Artwalk on Saturday, June 9th, 2018 at the event marking the official countdown to SumFest. SumFest, dubbed the “greatest reggae show on earth” is Jamaica’s biggest music festival that took place in Montego Bay from July 20th through July 24th. Martin’s track serves as the unofficial Red Stripe anthem and also features follow along choreography.

“Reggae music is intrinsically Jamaican and so is Red Stripe Beer and so it makes perfect sense that the great Jamaican Beer would develop this tribute to reggae to celebrate Desnoes and Geddes 100th anniversary. This EP allows our fans to experience, first hand, the ‘good vibes’ of our heritage through an amazing collection of original songs from celebrated Reggae artists across multiple genres.”

Chillin' with Nick Tarabay, featured image

From a gladiator in ancient Rome, to a CIA black ops agent tracking down people with special powers, and a self-righteous police lieutenant, Nick Tarabay has brought to life diverse and dynamic characters in film and television, emerging as “one to watch” in the entertainment industry.

This year Nick can be seen in a handful of exciting projects. On the film front he appeared opposite Scott Eastwood, John Boyega, and Charlie Day in Universal Pictures’ Pacific Rim Uprising. Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, the film follows “Jake Pentecost” (Boyega), who reunites with “Mako Mori” (Rinko Kikuchi) to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival “Nate Lambert” (Eastwood) and 15-year-old hacker “Amara Namani” (Cailee Spaeny), against a new Kaiju threat.

In television, Nick joined the cast of The Expanse for SYFY during season two, and instantly became a fan favorite as “Cotyar,” former member of the UN Military in the Intelligence Division who is now a freelance security contractor and private intelligence operative. Nick returned to the show for season three, which picked up immediately following the emotional and suspenseful second season finale. The 13-episode third season finds Earth, Mars and The Belt at war, with each competing entity vying for control.

Nick may be best known, however, for his work on the critically acclaimed worldwide hit series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, starring as “Ashur,” a former gladiator whose intelligence, resourceful ways, and strength helped catapult him high in the ranks in ancient Rome. He went on to reprise the role in Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, and Spartacus: Vengeance.

Heaven Hill Launches Fall 2018 Edition of Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Series

By | Mixology News

Fall 2018 Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Series, bottle and glass on dark background, featured image

Heaven Hill Distillery has announced the release of the fall 2018 edition of Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Comprised of barrels produced in October of 2008, and bottled in August of 2018, the second release ushers in the latest hallmark series to the bottled-in-bond legacy.

Bottled in an ornate decanter, the fall edition denotes a black label, which will stay consistent across all fall releases. As was the case for the spring edition, this edition’s tax strip, which has always been a signature of transparency on bottled-in-bond products, will disclose when the liquid was produced and bottled. The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond fall edition will be available in the 750ml size on an allocated basis. It meets the strict requirements of a bottled-in-bond: the product of a single distillery from a single distilling season, aged a minimum of four years, and bottled at 100 proof or 50% alcohol by volume. The second edition is available at a suggested retail price of $90.

Papa’s Pilar Releases Platinum Blonde Limited-Edition Rum

By | Mixology News

Papa's Pilar Platinum Blonde Limited Edition Rum, bottle on table, featured image

92-Proof Expression Draws Inspiration from Cuban-Styled Rum.

Papa’s Pilar®, the award-winning, premium sipping rum inspired by Ernest Hemingway, will release 2,000 cases of Platinum Blonde rum in select markets beginning August, 2018. As the first special release crafted from the brand’s award-winning flagship Blonde Rum, the team of Master Blenders drew inspiration from Cuban-style rum, which is known for being light to medium bodied, smooth and soft.

While the team chose to use the same five premium aged rums as in the Flagship Blonde expression, which are sourced from five different locations throughout the Caribbean, Central America and the U.S., they varied the quantity of the rums (aged from 2-7 years) to produce a specific taste profile the Master Blender was looking to achieve. The five rums are column distilled and solera blended in Bourbon barrels and Spanish Sherry casks. Rich notes from once-used bourbon barrels gives the expression great depth. Other factors, including the cooperage, temperature and different percentage of rums, also impact everything from the nose, color, flavor and finish. Over-proofed at 92 (vs. the Flagship at 84-proof), Platinum drinks smoothly, is incredibly mixable and perfect for cocktails.

“Drawing inspiration from Cuban-styled rum, Papa’s Pilar Platinum Blonde Limited Edition is a light to medium bodied rum that took years to perfect. It’s one of the best batched releases of which I’ve been a part and certainly one of which ‘Papa’ would be proud.”
– Ron Call, Head of Rum Production

Papa's Pilar Platinum Blonde Limited Edition Rum, bottle on wood table

Papa’s Pilar Platinum Blonde Limited Edition Rum

Papa’s Pilar is meant to rekindle a sense of adventure in us all. “Papa” as Ernest Hemingway was known, lived an epic life full of perpetual motion, and Papa’s Pilar was crafted to accompany rum enthusiasts as they sink their teeth into life. Named for his muse and one true constant, Pilar is the vessel that allowed America’s literary giant to reach beyond the shoreline, feast on life and remind us to never be a spectator.

Papa’s Pilar Platinum Blonde Limited-Edition Rum Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Subtle, clean and verdant with fluttering notes of bright citrus and greenery that offer a nice balanced aroma
  • Taste: Similar to a traditional Cuban style rum, with notes of mango, citrus and vanilla combined with a buttery mouthfeel
  • Finish: Hints of ripe banana complimented by American Oak and a dry full finish

A Platinum Rum is a platinum find. Papa’s Pilar will encourage fans to share where they’ve spotted this exclusive edition as it may never be released again.

Q is Now the Leading Premium Carbonated Mixer in U.S.

Q Drinks Line-Up, featured image

Independent Research Shows Brooklyn Brand Leads The Way In Rapidly Expanding Category.

IRI reports that Q’s range of premium mixers, which includes Spectacular Tonic, Indian Tonic, Grapefruit, Ginger Ale, Ginger Beer, Club Soda, and Kola, grew more than 46 percent in the most recent 12-week period ending May 20, 2018. This represents a faster rate of growth than any other premium mixer line in America.

In a proprietary survey of U.S. bartenders released by Jefferies Group on June 22nd, 2018, Q was found to have the highest awareness of any premium mixer line, with awareness more than twice that of the next premium carbonated mixer brand.

As a category, Jefferies notes that premium carbonated mixers are poised to see dramatic, multi-billion-dollar growth in the coming years in the United States, mirroring a trend in Europe. Q’s position atop the premium carbonated mixer category in the U.S. puts it at the tip of the spear of an additional trend: according to Jefferies, 72 percent of U.S. bartenders now believe premium gin should be mixed with premium tonic water and 68 percent of US bartenders think consumers will pay extra for premium mixers.

Q Drinks Line-Up, featured image

Q Drinks Line-Up

“We’re right at the tipping point for the premium mixer category in the United States, and it is really exciting to be leading the charge. Every day, more bars, restaurants, and consumers realize that the mixer is 70 percent of a highball so it should have the same quality and sophistication as your spirit. The exact same thing happened in Europe about three years ago, when premium mixers hit 5 percent market share, it no longer was acceptable to serve yourself or someone else a good spirit with a lousy mixer.”
– Jordan Silbert, Founder and CEO of Q Drinks

Q carbonated mixers, first introduced by Silbert in 2007, can now be found in more than 11,000 on- and off-premise accounts in the U.S.
