Chillin’ with Samantha Michelle, featured image

Hailed by Flaunt Magazine as one half of “London’s most exciting DJ duo,” International DJ, actress, and filmmaker, Samantha Michelle makes her way back to the US with her hugely popular and spirited DJ sets that can only be described as distinctly vintage, upbeat and classical, as she fuses familiar tunes with rare records moving swiftly between the genres of rhythm and blues, ska, reggae, soul, and funk.

Bringing with her a deep passion to share good vibes and great times, the successful creator is a force to be reckoned with, already holding residencies at Omar’s Park Avenue, The Morrison Hotel Gallery, and Sunset Marquis, and DJ’ing for various events for Saks Fifth Avenue, Good Luck Dry Cleaners, God’s Love We Deliver, and the reception and closing gala of the exhibition of “The Lost Warhols,” where she also managed the creative content and experiential programming for the entire three weeklong exhibition.

Her love of music and inclinations towards all things rock-n-roll surface in her work as a filmmaker and all-around storyteller. Her glamourous aesthetic, whilst nodding to a bygone era, ultimately reflects her own individualized and vividly irreverent approach to creative expression, and as she continues to make films and tell stories, she’s creating a narrative-oriented content designed to bridge the worlds of cinema and commerce. Her first fashion film for the iconic 70s shoe cobbler, Terry De Havilland, was selected as a finalist for the ELLE Canada Fashion Film Competition.

Her first dramatic short, The Dark Side of the Sun, was accepted into the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner and has screened internationally at various festivals including NewFilmmakers NY, EuroShorts, and The Groucho Club Short Film Festival. InStyle UK launched the film’s trailer and named Samantha the “Filmmaker to Watch” in their “FUTURE 15” anniversary issue spread. She is currently in the works of writing the feature version of the project, whilst developing her second dramatic short, and she also recently directed/produced a documentary-style promotional film for The Lost Warhols exhibition in NYC.

Tell us a bit about the projects you are working on.

Lots of playing tunes! I’ve got some fun gigs coming up. I was in the Hamptons to play at a charity event out there, and then I go back over to London to do a show with my DJ partner in Cornwall with Craig Charles, a little funk and soul special by the sea, so that should be quite fun. Anytime a gig takes me near the water, I’m a pretty happy lady. I’m also in the works of developing a new short film that I’ve written and plan to direct; it’s pretty nicely dark, and disturbing, but I find very exciting in that respect. It expands on some of the themes at play in my last film, The Dark Side of the Sun, and as I’ve just finished acting in this film up in Canada, I’m pretty thrilled about the idea of hopping back behind the camera.

With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your downtime?

I really love connecting people, so I’m all about getting a gang together. It’s nice to arrange an intimate dinner or drinks somewhere and invite along a whole bunch of mates who don’t really know each other, or don’t know each other at all and just see what happens. I’m also a big fan of staying in and getting cozy with a good film and delivery. Especially when I know I’ve got a busy work schedule up ahead, or when I’m coming off a load of travel, it’s important to take a second and have a grand time in your own company.

When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

Well I’ve just moved to NYC, so I love exploring new places, as cliché as that may sound; the city is absolutely inexhaustible in every, and all the best possible ways. That said, I do have my favorites and I’m incredibly loyal to them. There’s a place called Fish in the West Village that my best mate and I hit up on a highly frequent basis; they serve shelled peanuts at the bar and they encourage you to throw the shells on the floor, so that’s always a wonderfully satisfying experience. I love any place that lets you behave like a small child.

What types of dishes do you usually order?

I like healthy food, strange as that may sound. I’m a big fan of vegetables and salads. I mean I can get into a dark chocolate explosion just as much as the next person but I like to balance it out with clean, simple eating. I like to have lots of different flavors going on at once, so I’m a fan of the small plate approach or dining family style.

Do you cook?

In a word – nope.

What types of drinks do you order when out?

I like a nice glass of wine with dinner. I can also happily knock back a Tito’s and soda or two. And in NYC, and oddly, it’s a thing I want only in NYC, ideally in a hotel bar—a dirty vodka martini with olives. Complimented by a nice nut mix, that’s a perfect situation right there.

Do you prepare drinks at home?

Not usually, but on special occasions, for special guests.

Do you own a home bar?

I do.

What is it stocked with?

At the moment, it’s looking a little sparse as I’ve been traveling a fair bit and have been focused on writing these last few weeks, which generally means, a little less drinking. It’s mostly stocked with gifts—so there’s a beautiful bottle of Casa Azul which my not-so-baby brother got me into, and left for me, some rose champagne and a bottle of red or two.

What is your favorite drink/cocktail?

I went through a phase for a solid five years where I only drank Johnnie Walker Black, which forever holds a soft spot in my heart, but now I take a more egalitarian approach. I do love a nice Negroni. But there’s also nothing quite like a nice glass of Gavi on a steamy summer evening.

Have you ever been a bartender?

Not in this lifetime. Yet.

The Shannon Rose Partnered with Tullamore D.E.W. to Create Three-Foot Tall, 33-Gallon Irish Coffee Glass.

The Shannon Rose Irish Pub kicked off its annual Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day celebration with an event of epic proportions at its location in Clifton, NJ. In partnership with Tullamore D.E.W., The Shannon Rose introduced New Jersey’s largest glass of Irish Coffee.

The massive libation consisted of over 27 bottles of Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey, more than 17 gallons of fresh-brewed coffee and a pound of sugar, topped with nearly eight gallons of fresh whipped cream, charismatically concocted in an enormous, custom-made three-and-a-half-foot-tall, 22-inch-wide glass, amounting to approximately 33 gallons of mouthwatering Irish Coffee. Guests filtered in to the pub to watch the making of this supersized version of the classic Irish whiskey cocktail, made using The Shannon Rose Irish Pub’s tried-and-true recipe, and enjoyed a tasting while celebrating that St. Patrick’s Day is halfway here.

Sustainable Stirrers

By | Mixology News

Sustainability is becoming more than just a buzzword in the hospitality industry.

More and more restaurants, bars, and bartenders are thinking as much about the carbon footprint of what they serve their drinks in as what they’re putting into their cocktails.

And given that over 150 billion plastic straws and stirrers are thrown away yearly, that’s what Drynkware has been betting on.

The indie barware brand, which Alyssa and Daniel Ryley founded in 2015, is changing the way people are stirring their cocktails. The Colorado-based company’s metal stirrers, which are designed in-house, come in a variety of shapes and styles. The stirrers are designed in-house and can also make custom stirrers for your corporate event, wedding, high-school reunion, or any other function.

“The stirrers are great conversation pieces, creating organic chatter away from traditional business communication channels. They are also highly desirable, creating demand and visibility for companies or marketing materials that customers want to actually keep. Our stirrers are highly sustainable, helping bars, restaurants, and hotels in the fight to keep billions of plastic cocktail stirrers out of landfills and oceans each year.”

Conor McGregor Launches Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey

By | Mixology News

Conor McGregor with Proper No. Twelve, featured image

Eire Born Spirits has announced the launch of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Champion and one of the world’s most iconic athletes, Conor McGregor, is the founder, chairman and majority owner of the company. McGregor is proud to introduce this exciting Irish whiskey to the world, launching in Ireland and the United States, with further expansion in 2019 and onward. McGregor, being the perfectionist that he is, took a detailed, time-intensive approach to creating his whiskey.

Numerous Irish whiskey makers sought McGregor’s endorsement over the years, but as a true born and bred Irishman, he did not want to simply endorse an Irish whiskey. Inspired by his pride for Ireland and his love of Irish whiskey, McGregor wanted to create his own whiskey that would match his high standards and make his country proud.

For years, McGregor developed the brand under the project name “Notorious” through which came the foundation of what was to eventually become Proper No. Twelve. It became a longer and more complicated project than originally expected, so McGregor turned to the world’s oldest whiskey distillery, located in Ireland, with a proven history of quality whiskey making. He met David Elder, esteemed master distiller, previously of Guinness, and together they took painstaking measures to bring the whiskey to fruition.

“We created close to one hundred blends and ultimately selected what we knew was the one and only proper whiskey blend. We took the time to develop an incredible whiskey and I’m excited to share it with the world.”
– Conor McGregor

Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey

Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey

Proper No. Twelve’s global launch expression is a blend of the finest golden grain and single malt. It is produced in an area known for its rich soil and pure spring water. Proper No. Twelve is complex and sophisticated yet smooth and approachable with hints of vanilla, honey and toasted wood.

“I come from a place called Crumlin, in Dublin 12. It’s a place dear to my heart. It’s where I learned how to fight; it made me who I am today. It’s a place I’m still very much a part of every single day of my life. So, that’s where the name came from. It’s proper Irish whiskey and twelve is my hometown. Growing up on the streets of Dublin 12, I learned the values of loyalty and hard work. I respect other Irish whiskeys, but I am coming in strong, with passion and with purpose. I am the founder of this company and I am going to give it my all.”
– Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor with Proper No. Twelve

Conor McGregor with Proper No. Twelve

It is important to McGregor to give back in a meaningful way. First responders exemplify his core values and those of Proper No. Twelve—commitment, loyalty and community—a “ONE FOR ALL” mentality.

“First responders all over the world are the unsung heroes who act with courage and answer the call of duty every day for people in need. I have great respect for these men and women.”
– Conor McGregor

The company has committed to donate $5 for every case sold to local first responder organizations/charities, up to $1 million annually. The organizations/charities will be identified for each state and country around the world and donations will go directly to specific states and countries where sales take place.

Proximo has been named the global distribution partner for Proper No. Twelve, which will be available in McGregor’s homeland of Ireland and the United States September, 2018. Proper No. Twelve is 80 proof.

Chilled Drink of the Week: The Excavation

By | Mixology News

The Excavation, cocktail over view with garnish

The Spirit of Adventurous Mixing with Mamont Vodka.

Two things inspired my cocktail. The first was the discovery and excavation of the Yukagir Mammoth’s bones in the frozen tundra of Siberia. I wanted to create a cocktail that resembled the bones protruding from the ice and snow, revealing the mammoth to the 12 explorers that discovered it in 2002. The dehydrated hibiscus leaves and cinnamon act as the visual components of this inspired adventure.

My play on a fizz felt fitting as the meringue gives a snow-like feel to the drink. I decided to use flavors that resemble warmth to me in the below freezing climate. The cinnamon, vanilla and cream allow the silky mouthfeel and overall smoothness of the Mamont Vodka to truly shine as the star and I added Hibiscus tea to play into the subtle citrus notes I find on the finish of the vodka. Together these ingredients represent a winter warmth cocktail with a burst of citrusy creaminess.

The second inspiration was the bottle. I wanted to visually represent the separation of the gold top from the tusk. A fizz helped accomplish just that, as the meringue plays as the separation of color on the bottle. To the great explorers who inspired the fantastic spirit that is Mamont Vodka, thank you for inspiring me to bring this cocktail to life.

Finally, the cocktail name is inspired by the adventure itself … “The Excavation”.
