Having an existential presence in the vodka and liquor community through the pure design of a crystal skull, Crystal Head Vodka has just launched a premier, one-of-a-kind bottle designed by famed artist John Alexander.

The launch of this limited edition product stems from the company’s celebration of 10 years in business.

The heads and brains of the brand (pun most certainly intended) chatted with a small gaggle of journalists at an exclusive launch party in the art studio of the vibrant and personable John Alexander. While gathered around, the three shared where the idea of the artist series came from, along with the entirety of the brand and how it was executed. Stories behind the design and creative purity fluttered around the room.

Co-founder Dan Aykroyd was grinning ear to ear as the discussion of bottle creativity and flawless artistic design from his friend and business partner were shared, as if they were sitting around a campfire telling stories.

The bottle features various John Alexander originals, including his renowned “Dancing on the Water Lilies of Life” piece, which can be found at the Dallas Museum of Art.

“I am thrilled to unite this expressive painting with the unique design of the Crystal Head Vodka bottle to help create the first edition in the Artist Series. This bottle stays true to the signature style of Crystal Head and appeals to spirit drinkers and art lovers alike.”

World-Renowned Artist Wyland Launches New Rum

By | Mixology News

He’s internationally known for his life-size, outdoor whale and sea life murals, but for marine artist Wyland, it’s his ‘pirate life’ that’s influencing his latest venture—the launch of his own name-brand rum.

“I’m a pirate. I’ve spent a lot of time diving the Caribbean, testing various rums. It’s a lifestyle brand I created here. Art and rum go together perfectly—even makes my art look better.”
– Wyland, Famed Painter and Conservationist, on His New Ultra-Premium Rum

Sourced, he says, from some of the finest, Caribbean distilleries, and hand-crafted in small batches, the new, silky smooth, 80-proof dark rum is aged eight years and can be enjoyed by itself or slightly chilled. A limited release product, it retails for $69 per 750 ml bottle and features Wyland’s iconic Bruni Italian premium, glass bottles.

To test his product, Wyland called upon some heavy-hitters from the music world, he says, including blues legend, Taj Mahal and his family, from the Caribbean, and rap artist, Pitbull, who he’d met on Norwegian Bliss. “He invited me to his house in Key Largo, where we’re neighbors. He was anxious to taste it,” says Wyland.

The new spirit is the first of four planned for distribution, with expansion plans to include vodka, tequila and whisky—each with its own signature, Wyland image, as part of the collection.

To be sold through select retailers in California, Florida and Hawaii, and online, the rum will also be featured on Norwegian Cruise Line, which most recently tapped Wyland to design signature hull artwork for its newest ship, Norwegian Bliss.

“It’s a pleasure to collaborate with Wyland once again, as he has not only been a great partner to our brand, but he is truly a member of the Norwegian family. We are pleased to support his new venture as he embarks on this journey. We look forward to featuring his new rum across our fleet.”
– Norwegian Cruise Line President and CEO, Andy Stuart

For Wyland, the art of rum is another way to connect with the more than 500,000 collectors who enjoy his art, others who appreciate the process and drinking experience, as well as something closer to his heart.

Game of Thrones Single Malt Scotch Whisky and White Walker by Johnnie Walker Launches

By | Mixology News

Johnnie Walker White Walker, bottle on white, featured image

In collaboration with HBO, Diageo is unveiling the new White Walker by Johnnie Walker Blended Scotch Whisky and The Game of Thrones Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collection.

The limited-edition whiskies are inspired by the iconic characters and the creative world of Westeros and beyond and are here to tide fans over during their wait for the eighth and final season.

“Groundbreaking partnerships continue to be a strategic initiative for Diageo as they foster exceptional creative collaboration and help showcase the breadth of our portfolio. We are very proud to have our collection of single malts and Johnnie Walker, the number one scotch whisky brand in the world, collaborate with HBO’s most successful TV franchise to develop these limited-edition offerings for fans to collect and celebrate the final season of Games of Thrones.”
– Dan Sanborn, Senior Vice President, Culture and Partnerships at Diageo

Johnnie Walker White Walker, bottle and glass

Johnnie Walker White Walker

“We knew there was fan appetite for a Game of Thrones whisky and once we saw Diageo’s vision for a way to collaborate together we knew the idea was perfect and the time was now. From the beginning, they understood that we wanted to create something special, and they’ve accomplished that with both White Walker by Johnnie Walker and the single malt collection. We’re confident fans will enjoy sipping these delicious whiskies as they wait for season eight and beyond.”
– Jeff Peters, Vice President, Licensing & Retail at HBO

The first limited-edition offering available in the realm is White Walker by Johnnie Walker, inspired by the most enigmatic and feared characters on the show—the White Walkers. This blend was created by whisky specialist George Harper alongside the small team of expert blenders at Johnnie Walker. At the heart of this new, innovative blend are single malts from Cardhu and Clynelish—one of Scotland’s most northern distilleries where whiskies have endured long Scottish winters, not dissimilar to the climate north of the wall. This special blend has notes of caramelized sugar and vanilla, fresh red berries with a touch of orchard fruit and is best served chilled—the Night King would have it no other way.

The bottling brings you right to the Frozen North with its icy white and blue design along with the iconic Striding Man now fashioned in armor to fit in among the ranks of the Night King’s forces. Utilizing temperature-sensitive thermochromic ink technology, fans will be reminded that “Winter is Here” from an unexpected graphic icy reveal on the bottle when frozen.

The Game of Thrones Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collection features eight scotches that are all new to the U.S., and are each paired with one of the iconic Houses of Westeros, as well as the Night’s Watch, giving fans an authentic taste of the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. Diageo’s unparalled diverse range of distilleries in Scotland, much like in Westeros, each have their own unique characteristics and produce a distinctive whisky representative of its local terroir. These similarities were the inspiration behind the collection, drawing an authentic storyline between each House and single malt pairing—from the power of water between both House Tully and The Singleton of Glendullan, to the legendary women behind House Targaryen and Cardhu, or the royal lineage of House Baratheon and Royal Lochnagar and more.

Dutch’s Spirits to Open Infamous Bootlegger’s Distillery on Anniversary of Prohibition Raid Date

By | Mixology News

Dutch's Spirits Distillery, featured image

A distillery rife with history returns to the Hudson Valley with ‘shine, whiskey and other craft spirits.

The last time the stills were full on this patch of land in Pine Plains New York, it was not exactly a legitimate operation. On this date 86 years ago, the FBI raided Harvest Homestead Farm, which at the time was the secret location of a bootlegging operation run by the legendary mobster Dutch Schultz. It was one of the biggest bootlegging outfits on the East Coast. When the Feds finally shut it down at the tail end of prohibition, they found two 2,000 gallon stills and over 10,000 pounds of sugar in the tunnels and bunkers hidden underneath the farm’s bunkhouse. It took 86 years, but the distillery will be back in business this winter, 2018, this time as Dutch’s Spirits, a farm-to-bottle distillery set to lead the local craft spirits renaissance that has turned this region into the Napa Valley of the East Coast.

The first label flowing out of the new (and legal) stills will pay homage to the site’s history. Owner Brendan McAlpine is dusting off one of Schultz’s original concoctions and working to resurrect, and improve upon, a recipe that dates back to 1932.

“It’s not what most people would associate with moonshine. It’s not rocket fuel. It’s very drinkable. It’s great on its own or as a perfect substitute for any cocktail recipe calling for white rum or vodka.”
– Brendan McAlpine

The 80 proof sugar wash is smooth enough to be enjoyed straight up or used in a wide variety of everyday cocktails. The nose bears aromas of cut grass and rich butterscotch. Succulent vanilla and grapefruit notes envelop the mouth and a medley of tropical fruit and maple flavors linger in a pleasantly long and smooth finish.

The Sugar Wash Shine will relaunch in New York in late 2018, with wider distribution throughout the tri-state area to follow in early 2019. Other labels will be released as production ramps up in early 2019, including a gin, bourbon, rye and brandy. All will be made with ingredients from the bounty of the surrounding region.

“When you’re distilling in the Hudson Valley, you never have to look far to find inspiration or great ingredients.”
– Brendan McAlpine

Dutch’s Spirits distillery will also become a hub for the agri-tourism boom happening throughout the Hudson Valley. A tasting room with a locally sourced, farm to table menu will open in spring 2019, and guests will be able to sample the offerings coming out of the on-site stills along with other NY produced beer, wine and craft spirits. A farm store will sell local products, and guests can tour the bunkers and tunnels throughout the 400 acre property that once housed the bootlegging operation. As the distillery expands, a hotel and event space, as well as a Dutch Schultz/prohibition museum are in the plans.

“People want something that’s connected to history, and a product that celebrates a sense of place, and it’s inspiration of the past plus the distilling techniques of today that make Dutch’s the future of NY State craft spirits.”
– Brendan McAlpine

Chilled Drink of the Week: Akashi-Tai Sake Old Fashioned

By | Mixology News

Akashi Tai Sake Old Fashioned, cocktail and bottle, featured image

The Flavors of Fall with Akashi-Tai Sake.

As a transplant to Florida from New Hampshire, I always miss the change of seasons which is pronounced in New England where it is defined by cooler temperatures and incredible fall foliage. I always wonder how many other transplants in Florida feel the same? Many, I think.

Since I can’t bring the more temperate fall weather from up north, I created a drink that was somewhat reminiscent of a classic New England fall cocktail, but refreshing enough to consume on the pool deck. This low ABV riff on an Old Fashioned is both sweet and floral and can be replicated anywhere.

Papa’s Pilar Releases Limited-Edition Bourbon Barrel Finished Dark Rum

By | Mixology News

Papa's Pilar Limited Edition Bourbon Barrel Finished Dark Rum, featured image

Over-Proofed, Yet Balanced Expression Spends Extra Time in American Oak Bourbon Barrels & Delivers a Warm and Layered Finish of Spice and Sweet.

Papa’s Pilar®, the award-winning, premium sipping rum inspired by Ernest Hemingway, will release 2,000 cases of a new 95-proof Bourbon Barrel Finished Dark Rum in select markets. The team of Master Blenders created this limited-edition expression of Papa’s Pilar Dark Rum, which, after solera aging in American Oak bourbon barrels, Port Wine casks, and Spanish Sherry Casks, spent additional time in Bourbon barrels allowing for a complex interaction between rum, and the once used Bourbon-soaked staves.

“In our quest to get rum back to its roots, we further aged Papa’s Pilar Dark rum in bourbon oak barrels, which adds a spicy yet sweet finish on the back of the palate. The flavor is magnitudes more complex and the longer we age, the more the sweetness drops. Each sip reveals a new discovery.”
– Ron Call, Head of Rum Production

Papa's Pilar Limited Edition Bourbon Barrel Finished Dark Rum, bottle and rope decoration, wood table

Papa’s Pilar Limited Edition Bourbon Barrel Finished Dark Rum

While the brand has previously released Dark rum further aged in Bourbon barrels, this limited-edition boasts a higher proof, a demand coming directly from the markets they service.

“Higher proof is not just on trend—it’s what consumers, bartenders and even distributors are asking for, and with rum, 95 proof is the perfect response. While common with whiskey, not many folks are over-proofing with rum. Prior releases for the 86-proof version of this release have received Double Gold and Gold awards and we’re excited to bring this new higher-proof version to our most valued customers.”
– Bill McGough, Chief Sales Officer, Mahalo Spirits

Papa’s Pilar Dark (flagship) is a bold and complex sipping rum, which is both pot and column distilled and boasts hand-selected rums up to 23 years old, and a long, velvety finish. At 86-proof, it is comprised of rums that are hand-selected from ports-of-call in the Caribbean, Central America and the U.S.A. for their age, character and maturity. While the expression won a “Double Gold” Medal at the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition upon launching, and in 2015 by The Fifty Best, it has since been named the “Best Rum in America” by the Caribbean Journal three years in a row.

Papa’s Pilar is meant to rekindle a sense of adventure in us all. “Papa” as Ernest Hemingway was known, lived an epic life full of perpetual motion, and Papa’s Pilar was crafted to accompany rum enthusiasts as they sink their teeth into life. Named for his muse and one true constant, Pilar is the vessel that allowed America’s literary giant to reach beyond the shoreline, feast on life and remind us to never be a spectator.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Complex notes of vanilla, coffee beans and honey, with hints of toasted almond
  • Taste: Full viscosity and a warm mouthfeel with almond, pecan, and dried apricot balanced with hints of bourbon and oak
  • Finish: Growing spice with a smooth sweetness and everlasting length

Papa’s Pilar was developed in conjunction with Ernest Hemingway’s estate. The Hemingway family donates a portion of their profits from Papa’s Pilar Rum to charity. The brand works with local charitable foundations and causes dear to Hemingway and his heirs.

Every aspect of Papa’s Pilar is thoughtful and purposeful. The distinct bottle evokes Papa’s exploits through a form factor reminiscent of an iconic WWII canteen. A special red cap and necker help to distinguish the Bourbon Barrel Finish from the Flagship Dark Rum. The etched compass closure reflects that same sense of adventure on either land or sea. The lion heads represent nobility while the Rooster on the Medallion pays homage to Key West, where Hemingway and his boat Pilar once resided and remain celebrated fixtures within the community.

Papa’s Pilar opened a distillery and experience center in Key West, Florida, in 2017, further honoring Hemingway’s contribution to the classic spirit of the city in which he once lived. The facility is a destination that serves as an innovation hub for the brand and an asset for the city of Key West.

Papa’s Pilar Bourbon Barrel Finished Dark Rum is available beginning this month in select markets, including AZ, CA, FL, GA, IN, KY, LA, MI, MO, NV, SC, TN, TX, and WA in 750ml bottles for a suggested retail price of $44.99-$46.99, which varies by market.
