Drink of the Week: A Little Black Magic to Welcome October

By | Mixology News

Black Magic, cocktail with garsnish

Coffee liqueur is making a serious comeback, and Australian brand Mr Black has been ahead of the trend for years.

Hailing from Sydney, Mr Black are high-quality roasters and distillers on a mission to bring craft coffee into the night. But this isn’t the syrupy sweet coffee liqueur you may have had in the past. Mr Black Cold Brew Liqueur is a bold, bittersweet blend of top-grade Arabica coffee and Australian wheat vodka that has just the right amount of sweetness. In the past few years, it has become the cocktail coffee of choice for the world’s best bars, restaurants and shops. We love it mixed in drinks or sipped on the rocks after a big meal.

This week, we’re drinking a bold, stirred sipper that’s sure to add a zing to your next cocktail hour. The Black Magic is a twist on the Cyn Cyn made with mezcal, Cynar, sweet vermouth and Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur. This drink gets some smoke from the mezcal and a smooth, bitter profile from the vermouth and Cynar. Mr Black adds a rich, bold flavor that makes this complex cocktail a winning libation choice for the season.

5 Tips on Creating Your Own Personal Style

By | Mixology News

Personalizing Your Style, mixologist mixing behind the bar, featured image

Personal style isn’t a difficult thing to cultivate—after all, it’s all about the clothing and accessories that make you feel good, inside and out.

But sometimes, you might feel a little stagnant in your wardrobe and in need of some inspiration to keep getting dressed in the morning fresh and exciting. Luckily for us, Bib & Tucker—America’s best dressed bourbon—has some expert tips on cultivating personal style. Whether you work behind the bar or just enjoy drinking in them, these five style pointers will freshen up your look in no time.

Dress to Support Your Lifestyle

If you work in the finance world, your closet is likely filled with suits and ties and a collection of more casual clothing for the weekend and vacations. If you’re behind the bar, tailored denim and sneakers likely make up your wardrobe. And maybe if you’re in tech, tees and hoodies might be your daily uniform. Whatever the situation may be, dressing to suit your lifestyle is the first step to creating personal flair.

If your career already requires a specific wardrobe, then build around that foundation with pieces that fit your personal preferences. If you have to wear a suit every day, experiment with shirt and tie patterns or snag a unique pair of vintage cufflinks. If the workplace is a jeans and tee environment, splurge on that pair of Japanese denim you’ve been eyeing. And in this athleisure-filled day in age, never underestimate the power of a great pair of sneakers.

Dress for Your Body Type

Personal style is all about looking good and feeling comfortable in your own skin. If you know the types of cuts, colors and fabrics that complement your body type instead of fighting it, you’re going to look amazing, even in the simplest outfit. Super slim pants look great on some guys, while voluminous cuts look amazing on others. Be true to your body type and show it love with the garments that fit it best, and your personal style will easily fall into place.

Don’t Be Afraid to Accessorize

Whether it’s with a great watch, vintage ring or lapel pin, don’t be afraid to customize your look with an accessory or two. If you have to wear a shirt and tie behind the bar, fill your apron with pins from your favorite spirits brands. Hit up flea markets and well-curated second hand stores to find inexpensive jewelry to take for a test run if you’re not used to wearing it. And whether you want to rock your favorite sports team or a Panama hat you snagged on vacation, headwear is always a great way to flaunt your personal style.

Look to Your Icons for Inspiration

If you’re feeling a little stagnant in your style (it’s okay, it happens to the best of us), there’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from an actor, athlete or other guy that you admire. Don’t try to copy what they are wearing because it’s likely unattainable and will only lead to discontent. But notice how your fashion icons style a blazer with jeans or tie a scarf or mix patterns and colors. That should add some inspiration to your daily dressing routine and even give you some ideas for your next shopping excursion.

Don’t Try Too Hard

Personal style is all about what makes you feel comfortable—never let the clothes wear you. That said, if you love rocking a white tee and blue jeans because it makes you feel like a million bucks, do it. If you love wearing a ring on every finger and a big belt buckle, go for it. Never let the style pages or someone else tell you how to dress, but also allow yourself to experiment when you feel the urge. That is how true style is cultivated.

An outfit always looks better with a drink in hand. And as America’s best dressed bourbon inside and out, Bib & Tucker is a great way to accessorize any look. The brand’s signature Sam Elliott Sour is a beautiful cocktail to transition your taste buds from summer to fall.

The Best New Spirit Releases from September 2019

The Best New Spirit Releases from September 2019, featured image

As summer turned into fall, it seemed like everyone released a cool new spirit to welcome the season.

Whether you’re in the mood for a soul-warming apple brandy or want to keep sunny days going with a new mezcal, there is something for everyone to enjoy this month. These are the best new spirits that were released in September.

Desert Door Oak-Aged Sotol ($50 for 750mL)

Sotol is a spirit that’s produced from West texas-grown evergreen sotol, also known as the Desert Spoon plant. While Native Americans living in Texas first produced the spirit thousands of years ago, Desert Door is making it a household name in the United States. Their Oak-Aged expression is a beautiful sipping spirit with rich notes of vanilla, cinnamon, allspice and pine nuts that finishes with caramelly oak flavor.

Glenfiddich Grand Cru ($327 for 750mL)

Scotland meets France in the latest expression from Glenfiddich that is perfect for toasting to your year-end celebrations. Glenfiddich Grand Cru single malt scotch is aged for 23 years in American and European oak casks, then finished in French cuvée casks to add elegant flavors like vanilla, white grape and yeasty brioche. Packaged in a sleek black bottle with gold accents, this stunning new whisky drinks above its price point.

Campari Cask Tales ($53 for 1L)

To celebrate more than 150 years of Davide Campari’s legacy, the brand released a new Campari expression to the United States. Campari Cask Tales is a modern take on the classic aperitif that has been finished in bourbon barrels to give it a balanced, subtle spiciness. Cask Tales has all of the floral bitterness you love from Campari with added notes of dark fruit and smoky oak from the charred barrels. Sip it neat or in place of original Campari in your favorite cocktail.

Dewar’s Caribbean Smooth ($22 for 750mL)

Both rum and scotch drinkers will love this new expression from Dewar’s. Dewar’s Caribbean Smooth is an eight-year-old, double-aged scotch whisky that’s finished in Caribbean rum casks for an extra velvety finish. They start with a blend of up to 40 single malts before finishing the mix in rum casks for about six months in their Glasgow aging warehouses. First you’ll taste notes of apple and cereal before flavors like brown sugar and coconut pounce to the front of the palate. We especially love it mixed into a Highball.

Lustau Vermut Rosé ($20 for 750mL)

Lustau knows their vermouth, which is why we were so excited to crack open this new bottle early last month. Lustau Vermut Rosé is a blend of three different wines: crisp Fino sherry, sweet Moscatel and a bright, fruity Tintilla de Rota wine. The pinkish orange liquid has notes of strawberry and orange blossom with a sweet, herbal flavor that makes for a perfect aperitif when served over ice with a slice of grapefruit.

Cinzano 1757 Vermouth di Torino ($23 for 1L)

Last month, Cinzano paid homage to its heritage by releasing 1757 Vermouth di Torino, which is handcrafted in small batches and reminiscent of the original recipe from the 1700s. The Rosso expression is sweet and fragrant with notes of dried fig that works beautifully in a Manhattan or Negroni. The Extra Dry Vermouth is bursting with Mediterannean herbs and has a lightly bitter finish that is excellent for mixing a Martini.

Knappogue Castle Marchesi di Barolo ($80 for 750mL)

As the latest release in their Cask Finish series, Knappogue Castle Marchesi di Barolo is a limited-edition single malt that’s finished in fine wine casks. This Irish whiskey is matured in bourbon barrels for 12 years before it’s further rested in casks from the Marchesi di Barolo winery, which lies in an area that’s protected by the Alps to the north, west and south. Fruity aromas fill the nose with notes of strawberries and bananas foster, and flavors of red fruit lead into a spicy finish.

Tamworth Distilling Graverobber Unholy Rye ($65 for 200mL)

The folks at New Hampshire’s Tamworth Distilling are always creating a new and interesting spirit, and their latest whiskey release has a spooky backstory that’s very October-appropriate. Graverobber Unholy Rye starts with a three-year-old rye before it’s blended with maple syrup that’s been tapped from the trees in a 1700s-era graveyard. The 90-proof spirit has a full-bodied rye spiciness that finishes with a smooth maple flavor to soothe the burn.

Cathead Old Soul Bourbon Whiskey ($50 for 750mL)

Cathead Distillery is Mississippi’s first legal distillery and the creator of seven small batch spirits. The latest in their lineup is Old Soul Bourbon, a blended whiskey with a mash bill of 75 percent corn, 21 percent rye and four percent malted barley. Even though the youngest bourbon in this blend is only two years old, Mississippi’s heat and humidity make the whiskey taste older than it is, hence the name. Expect flavors of toffee and dried cherry with a peppery finish from the high rye mash bill.

Doña Vega Espadîn Mezcal ($50 for 750mL)

Mezcal fans need to try the latest brand to hit the market, Doña Vega. While the brand’s Tobalá expression is a rare treat that’s meant to sipped neat on special occasions, the Espadîn bottling is a classic mezcal that can be enjoyed solo or in cocktails. The espadîn agave is hand-selected, and the liquid is triple distilled for an extra smooth flavor. Lightly smoky with a savory, peppery finish, serve Doña Vega Espadîn neat with an orange slice or mixed into a Mezcal Margarita.

Copper & Kings American Apple Brandy ($35 for 750mL)

Just in time for fall, Copper & Kings has released a brand new apple brandy to welcome the season. American Apple Brandy is distilled from apple wine—fermented from fresh-pressed apple juice—in Vendome American copper pot stills. It’s then aged in Kentucky bourbon and new American white oak barrels and bottled at 92 proof. Its apple nose and flavor is perfect for sipping once the air turns crisp, whether you prefer it neat or mixed in a cocktail.

The Macallan Edition No. 5 ($120 for 750mL)

The Macallan scotch is almost too easy to drink, and the brand’s latest expression is one of our favorites to date. For Edition No. 5, The Macallan partnered with Pantone to celebrate the whisky’s natural color spectrum and create a stunning purple label that will stand out on any bar cart. On the nose, rich scents of vanilla and toffee are met with fresh notes of basil, lemon and pear. Caramelized pears and spicy ginger linger on the palate as it morphs into a long and sweet finish. The Macallan Edition No. 5 is the gift we’ll be giving whisky aficionados all season.

Tell us a bit about the projects you are working on.

Another Life was just released worldwide on Netflix! I play the role of Dr. Nani Singh who is an extremely intelligent physicist. It’s a great show with a great cast, and you must watch!

With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your downtime?

I like to hit the gym daily and get some hard workouts in. I train in kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu as well. I love hiking with my dog Beast, and of course I enjoy having some wine with my friends!

When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

Wow, that is a loaded question for someone who loves all food! Seafood in Vancouver is amazing, and Coast is one of my favorite seafood restaurants. Maguro (in Ladner, BC) is the best for sushi. I love Italian and Thai, but I can’t choose a particular restaurant because there are too many good ones. And pizza and wine is a must—Novo is great for that.

What types of dishes do you usually order?

I guess that depends on the restaurant, but I usually don’t hold back when I eat out, and will order anything I’m craving. Recently, I had the best clam chowder I’ve ever had in San Francisco—still thinking about it!

Do you cook?

Yes. I usually cook healthier meals at home so that I can indulge when I eat out—lots of protein and greens. I also love to BBQ! I can make some pretty yummy ribs

What types of drinks do you order when out?

Usually red wine—a Californian Cabernet Sauvignon usually. My favorite cocktail is a Vodka Martini or something not too sweet.

Do you prepare drinks at home?

Yes, when I host, I like to have a signature cocktail or drink for the evening. The most recent one was a Moscow Mule type of drink. I love to make festive drinks near Christmas time as well, usually something that includes peppermint.

Do you own a home bar?

I absolutely do!

What is it stocked with?

My home bar is stocked with red wine, single malt scotch and vodka!

What is your favorite drink/cocktail?

Cabernet Sauvignon! I love wine and recently went to Napa where I tried my favorites thus far.

Have you ever been a bartender?

No, I have not, but when we have people over, I love to take over the bar and make fun drinks and shots for everyone.
