Top 5 Coolest Places to Stay if You Love to Drink

By | Mixology News

Wine Barrel Bed at The Yeatman Hotel Master Suite featured image

The pandemic has us grounded and that dream vacation is way, way on the backburner.

But #goals are important, so set your sights on a drink destination. As it turns out, there is a hotel that caters to almost every libation. Check out some of the coolest places to sip and stay.

Even non-sherry drinkers have heard the name Tio Pepe. Last month, the 185-Year-Old Sherry producer unveiled Hotel Bodega Tio Pepe, the world’s first Sherry Hotel. Located in the Old Town of Jerez, Spain the 27-room boutique hotel is in the 19th-century Gonzalez Byass winery in what was once the winery worker cottages.

Surrounded by walled streets and Andalucian courtyards, the hotel is a place where the culture and essence of Sherry can be experienced first-hand. Besides two “drinking dens” and gastronomy focused restaurants, this unique property is an extension of the Gonzalez-Byass family of wineries thus providing exclusive tasting experiences and access to old bottling rooms that make for a memorable trip every step of the way.

But if Sherry is not your thing and you’d rather be whisked away to a vat of single malt scotch whisky, then make your way to the rugged island of Islay in Scotland where you’ll find Bowmore Distillery. The iconic distillery makes a great dram that you can sip all day before you gracefully fall into a slumber at Bowmore Cottage, surrounded by history at one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries.

When it comes to wine, the term wine hotel is used extensively and quite liberally. When there is doubt it’s safest to stick to the classics. Head to Italy’s Lake Garda region where wine, food, stunning views, and stunning people all come together for that perfect holiday. The classic Villa Cordevigo is surrounded by a 250-acre family estate of vineyards and olive groves. The wines flow freely and the dining at its Michelin starred restaurant complements it perfectly so pack your bags and don’t look back.

For secret Harry Potter fans there is no better destination than Porto. J.K Rowling lived in this winding mystical town on the river when writing the successful series and we suspect she was enjoying some local libations to help fuel those character creations. The most famous wine hotel in Portugal is  Porto’s The Yeatman Hotel, a beautiful hilltop property surrounded by Port houses. Ramble the streets between tastings at the numerous wine lodges until those quaint cobble stone streets become treacherous after a few too many sips of that white port. Jump in a water taxi on the Douro river back to the Yeatman and crawl into your port wine barrel bed. Yes. You read that correctly.

Closer to home, the craft beer takeover has spilled into hotels and the Doghouse Hotel & Brewery in Columbus, Ohio is the place to be. The only craft-beer hotel we found out there does not disappoint and is actually located inside a functioning brewery. Wake up and smell the aroma of beer as you roll over to fill your glass from your in-room tap.
