What To Bring To Friendsgiving

By | Mixology News

AMASS Dry Gin, featured image

Much like with the rest of 2020, Thanksgiving will be totally different this year.

But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to treat yourself while you hunker down. Whether you’re looking for a libation while you feast with the members of your household or small circle, or connecting with friends and families across the miles via Zoom, here are some of the most notable sips to stock up on and gobble down for the holiday whether gearing up for your meal, to bottles that make ideal Turkey pairings, and even ones that pair perfectly with the inevitable plates of leftovers.

For when you know it’ll be a long day: Cafe Agave Spiked Cold Brew

Sometimes plain old coffee just won’t cut it. Cafe Agave’s range of spiked cold brews, whether decadent mocha, sweet caramel and French Vanilla or plain espresso are just the thing on a late Thanksgiving afternoon when you’re craving caffeine to get you through the long day while also hankering for a boozy libation. Boasting 42 grams of natural caffeine per modestly-sized can, it’s the brand’s quality ingredients (including real dairy cream, cold brewed coffee and agave sweetener), that make it stand out in a boozy market saturated with caffeine-boosted options.

For a high quality mixer when soda or juice won’t do: Perfectly Cordial

If you really want to wow the small circle of family, friends (or frenemies!) you’re spending Turkey Day with, bust out some Perfectly Cordial mixers. Crafted lovingly by hospitality vet Rhonda Cammon who was inspired by her Miami youth, Cammon’s concoctions are nothing like the boring juices and sodas you’re used to (Ocean Spray is so yesterday).  Boasting hand-picked fruit and a range of spices in its varietals including Jalapeno Mint and Tropical Sour, the brand gives us one more reason to be thankful this year.

For a libation that’s a people pleaser: AIR Vodka

Pleasing even the fussiest family of drinkers, you can’t go wrong with vodka thanks to its versatility, whether in a Cosmopolitan for mom, a Moscow Mule for dad, or on the rocks for your kooky aunt. And since it’s a special occasion, forget the ubiquitous brands and reach for AIR Vodka. Packaged in a minimalist bottle (to echo the purported purity of what’s inside), the brand proudly bills itself as “the world’s cleanest, highest quality and most sustainable spirit” as its made from just two ingredients (carbon dioxide and water) and boasts a distillation system that uses renewable solar energy that removes one full pound of carbon from the air for every bottle. So it’s sippable and environmentally friendly, which is something even your kooky aunt can get behind.

For something light and airy: Canteen Vodka Sodas

Of course, if you don’t want to have to deal with mixers, a classic canned vodka soda also does the trick. And instead of that popular brand that rhymes with “Flight Paw,” Canteen offers an array of unique flavors and street cred to whet your vodka soda whistle. Whether you’re in the mood for the fresh taste of cucumber mint, grapefruit or watermelon, Canteen is bound to make a versatile and airy addition to any overflowing Turkey Day meal.

For an amazing cocktail perfect for autumn: Proof’s Pumpkin Spice Syrup

The amount of pumpkin products on the market has become a running joke, from the normal (Pumpkin spice lattes) to the unique (Cheerios, tea, and hand lotion). Hopping on the trend with monumental success is Proof’s Pumpkin Spice Syrup, designed to add an autumnal punch to any cocktail. Whether it’s in eggnogs, Old Fashioneds or hot buttered rums, Proof could please anyone’s penchant for pumpkin.

For the classy cocktail hounds: AMASS Dry Gin

AMASS Dry Gin

AMASS Dry Gin

When it comes to the highbrow members of your Thanksgiving gang, a good gin can go a long way. Enter: AMASS Dry Gin. With notes of floral hibiscus, subtle cardamom and spicy ginger, AMASS’s calling card is that it’s a love letter to its home city of Los Angeles, with the brand inspired by its natural terrain and cultural landscape. Whether you have an affinity for the city, live there, or just never been, the gin stands on its own as the ideal partner for a cocktail by the fire or a post-dinner libation to help digest your fantastic feast. Even better: AMASS also boats its own array of hand sanitizer, to help be extra safe while you sip.

For a libation to spice up dinner: Tanteo Tequila

What pairs best with a big plate of turkey and stuffing? Tequila! Okay, maybe the spirit isn’t as associated with the big day as Pumpkin Pie for example, but if you’re going to spring for the stuff, it may well have some kick. Tanteo offers a variety of opportunities for a tequila with said kick with fiery flavors like habanero, jalapeno or chipotle. Even better, Tanteo is produced at the only distillery owned by its co-op of agave farmers. The result is a deeply flavorful spirit perfect for spicy sip to side wash down the turkey breast you overcooked.

For the laidback mixologist: High West Barrel Finished Cocktails

With major street cred as Utah’s first distillery since the 1870s, High West is here to make every drinker happily gobble as they recently wadded into the wonderful world of pre-batched cocktails. The results are Barrel-Finished Manhattan and a Barrel-Finished Old Fashioned, both ideal for when one wants a high quality cocktail with none of the thought nor hassle. When you’re stuffed with turkey yet savoring every sip, just thank the brand’s Master Distiller and Beverage Director (Brendan Coyle and Steve Walton) for the rye barrel-matured goodness.

For a turkey sandwich lunch: Picnic Brunch Bloody Mary and Mimosa

Just imagine it’s the day after the holiday and the only thing you want to think about is Netflix and leftovers while you lounge around in your sweats. Pairing perfectly with a piled-high turkey and stuffing sandwich is Picnic Brunch’s range of canned libations, whether savory Bloody Mary or sweet Mimosa. And this isn’t a poor imitation of the two cocktails, as the company mimics your favorite brunch spot. Pour it in a glass, and you’d think it was freshly made on the spot.

For a celebratory, and cozy, pair of drinks: Bull’s Head Bourbon and Porter’s Small Batch Rye

Bull's Head Bourbon

Bull’s Head Bourbon

Finally, the holiday weekend is over! Dishes are cleaned, the family is asleep and you just want to collapse on the couch in celebration of another successful Turkey Day. Luckily, two brands are here to help you out: Bull’s Head (hailing from New York) and Ogden’s Own Porter’s (from Utah).

Ogden’s Own Porter’s

Ogden’s Own Porter’s

When it comes to the latter, it’s the area’s first licensed distillery since the 1800s with the Rye aged over three years at 111, subsequently blending down to 90 proof to make for a rich and flavorful product. As for Bull’s Head, the child of brand Spirits Lab that’s aged for four years and made from corn, wheat and malted barley, its luscious product is appropriately named after the Bull’s Head Tavern where Washington took his troops to toast their final victory… kind of like your own victory for surviving another successful Thanksgiving.

Cocktail Shrubs for Fall and Winter

By | Mixology News

winter beets by natalia-fogarty

What is Shrub?

A shrub is a vinegar-based syrup infusion with fruit, vegetables, herbs, or spices. In colonial America, vinegar was used to preserve seasonal crops, and the refreshing leftover shrub was drunk for its electrolytes and nutrients.

Today we don’t need to preserve our crops in vinegar, but shrubs are still used as unique and interesting ingredients by chefs and mixologists across the globe. Here you’ll find shrub recipes for fall and winter, along with ideas on how to incorporate them into mixed drinks.

Harvest Shrub

Fall is the traditional time to start shrubs – the last harvest of the season has to be preserved for winter somehow. It’s also a great time to incorporate those familiar spices we all associate with fall; nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, and cardamom are delicious in shrubs with apples, pumpkins, or peaches.

Blueberries are my favorite fall fruit. I’m from the midwest, where blueberries are collected by the bucket as summer ends and days start getting shorter. I freeze fresh blueberries for smoothies all winter, but this blueberry shrub is the best way have fresh blueberry flavor on hand for cocktails year-round.

Blueberry Shrub cocktail

Blueberry Bucket Shrub

Fill up a large mason jar or plastic container with the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup Fresh Blueberries
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 3 cinnamon Sticks
  • 1 cup White Balsamic Vinegar

Preparation: Cover and store in a dark, cool place for at least 1 week. Strain out and discard the solids.

This cinnamon and white balsamic vinegar in this shrub make it deep and flavorful. It pairs well with brandy or gin, especially with a splash of lime. Splash it into mineral water or hot tea for added intrigue and depth.

Shrub Through Winter

Gardens are bare and farmers markets are closed in the wintertime, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still find some good produce! Apples and beets are harvested almost year-round. Closer to the equator, citrus is in season during the winter. Even after shipping, lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit have great flavor through the colder months.

This beet shrub is an all-time favorite of mine because I’m crazy about beets! We make it by the gallon and drink it through winter and spring at my house. The beets make the shrub bright purple, and their earthiness is balanced out by the apples and orange peel.

Beet Shrub

Fill up a large mason jar or plastic container with the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups Beets
  • 1 cup Apples (Skin on, core removed)
  • 1 Orange Peel
  • 3 cups Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 3 cups Brown Sugar

Preparation: Cover and store in a dark, cool place for at least 2 weeks. Strain out and discard the solids.

The best way to drink this shrub is with some tequila or smokey mezcal. I like to add some ginger liquor and fresh lime, too. For a nonalcoholic drink, try mixing it with orange juice and ginger ale, or keep it simple and splash it in sparkling water with a twist of lime.

Endless Possibilities

These recipes are intended to be a jumping off point for your imagination when it comes to making shrub. You can use any kind of vinegar you like. You can add spices, herbs, and citrus to develop the flavor profile. I like to use blue agave or maple syrup instead of sugar in some recipes or leave the sugar out altogether to create a savory shrub.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and switch up ingredients. One of the best parts about making shrub is the inevitable variation you get with each batch, so have fun with it!

Cheers!

Zing Zang Brings a Punch of Flavor to the RTD Market

By | Mixology News

Zing Zang RTD Cocktails, white background, featured image

There are few names more ubiquitous in the drinks world than Zing Zang.

The line has quickly become the go-to mixer of professional bartenders and at-home drinkers alike. While they first gained their fame from their award winning Bloody Mary mix, the line has grown to offer a range of mixes and now, they’re branching into the RTD category. We had the chance to catch up with Brent Albertson, CEO of Zing Zang, to learn more about the launch.

Zing Zang RTD Bloody Mary, cocktail and can on white

Zing Zang RTD Bloody Mary

Congrats on the new launch! Are you excited to be moving into this new category?

Thank you. We are all very excited and know that consumers really want great spirit based RTD cocktails from a trusted name like Zing Zang using all-natural ingredients in our mix.

The Bloody Mary was an obvious choice, how did your team decide on the other two flavors?

Yes, we make the #1 Bloody Mary Mix in the USA so that was easy. We also make the fastest growing premium Margarita Mix with a unique all natural three-citrus juice blend & Margaritas are #1 cocktail so that was another obvious choice. Last year we re-launched our Sweet & Sour, Daiquiri, and Pina Colada mix made with all-natural ingredients as well. All make great drinks, but the real story is that one of our Zing Zang HQ “go-to” internal happy hour favorites is the Bourbon Sour. We fill a rocks glass with ice, drizzle 3 Luxardo cherries on top, add 2 shots of Bulleit Bourbon and fill the glass with Zing Zang Sweet & Sour Mix. This is the most amazing Bourbon Sour!! Customers and distributors agreed wholeheartedly, so we modeled our Bourbon Whiskey Sour after that Zing Zang HQ happy hour favorite, and with the explosive growth of the bourbon category we’re confident people will be excited to try it too!

Zing Zang RTD Whiskey Sour, cocktail and can on white

Zing Zang RTD Whiskey Sour

Can we expect to see any additions to the RTD line in the future?

We have some formulas that we really think are fantastic drinks using our current mixer line. We are known for bold mixers with all-natural ingredients, so we think there are lots of options to offer consumers full strength bartender quality cocktails in the convenience of a can.

Do you expect the RTD market to continue after the end of Covid?

Yes, for sure. Consumers want choices and a variety of premium options from trusted Brands. Some still like to mix their own and create their own masterpiece, depending on the occasion, but many want a great cocktail without the hassle of buying and opening a full bottle of liquor, a full bottle of mix and cutting fruit or vegetables for garnish. The key is to make what they want, a real premium full strength mixed drink!

We heard that you’ve been considering your RTD’s as something that helps Bartenders, not replaces them, can you tell us a little bit about how you’ve envisioned that?

Zing Zang was built in bars and restaurants across America by bartenders that discovered Zing Zang’s complex array of ingredients and 7 vegetable juices. They were not only loyal, but instrumental in helping us spread the word in the drinks industry. Our RTD’s are made with that same legendary mix and are a perfect way for operators to offer great, consistent, full strength drinks on their takeout menus when a need for low costs and contact free cocktail options is critical to helping rebuild their businesses.

Zing Zang RTD Margarita, cocktail and can on white

Zing Zang RTD Margarita

What has the customer reaction been to the addition of the Zing Zang RTD’s been?

We are just getting started but so far feedback is terrific. Like everyone in the industry, we are really excited to get resorts, casinos, golf courses and all of on premise back to full swing.  Our grocery and liquor retail partners love the idea of convenience and on the go so our 4pks with cans available to sell as singles are perfect for that.  And because our offerings offer differentiation from the seltzer sea of sameness with Real Bartender Quality full strength RTD’s, we are a great fit for all channel opportunities, including the on-premise.

Celebrate Small Brewery Sunday on November 29th

Celebrate Small Breweries Nov 29th, featured image

Small Brewery Sunday will be celebrated for the second year in a row on November 29th to bring awareness and support to independent breweries.

Created by Brewers Association, the national beer holiday is dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers.

Small Brewery Sunday

Small Brewery Sunday

The day encourages beer lovers to celebrate by supporting local breweries, brewpubs, and taprooms throughout the holiday season. This year is especially important due to the uncertain futures of the small business that have been impacted by the pandemic.

The idea behind the holiday is for beer enthusiasts to support independent breweries by visiting taprooms or brewpubs. These businesses are critical to the local communities as well as nationwide. In 2019, the craft brewing industry contributed $82.9 billion to the U.S. economy. It also employed 580,000 Americans. However, due to the current global pandemic, many breweries have experienced a decline in sales and are about 22% down for the third quarter of 2020.

Celebrate Small Breweries Nov 29th

Celebrate Small Breweries Nov 29th

“This has been a devastating year for craft brewers, as they’ve faced shutdowns, decreased sales, layoffs, and aluminum can shortage. Our most recent member survey revealed only 78% of small breweries are confident that they’ll still be open at this time next year,” said Bob Pease, president, and CEO, Brewers Association. “As shoppers support local independent businesses, what better place than your local craft brewery? Six-packs, gift cards, or merchandise all make great gifts, and every little bit helps. It’s crucial for beer-lovers to support their local brewery, taproom, or brewpub throughout these next few critical months and beyond.”

More than two-thirds of Americans live within 10 miles of a brewery, allowing easy access to support this beer holiday. It is also encouraged to those who celebrate, to share their Small Brewery Sunday experiences on social media and use the hashtags #SmallBrewerySunday and #SeekTheSeal.

“Nothing goes better with a holiday meal than independent craft beer,” said Ann Obenchain, marketing director, Brewers Association. “Whether you are able to safely visit a brewery, taproom, or brewpub, or opt for curbside pickup or at-home delivery, one of the best ways to support your local economy and brewery during the holiday season is by giving the gift of craft beer and serving craft beer at the dinner table.”

The apple (and sometimes pear) based brandy originated in Normandy, France. Its roots can be traced to the sixteenth century with the first known distilling taking place in 1554.

“Calvados, dating back 500 years, is a cider-based brandy crafted from apple distillate, aging and varieties span from a minimum of two years to upward of thirty-plus years,” says Vincent Boulard, PR Director for Spirit France Group and owner of Calvados Boulard.

There are three appellations (or regions) for Calvados: Calvados (the basic appellation, making up seventy percent of all production), Calvados Domfrontais, and Calvados Pays d’Auge, “the most quality-oriented appellation,” says Boulard. Calvados Domfrontais must be made of at least thirty percent pears. This variety only makes up one percent of calvados production. The harvest for the apples and pears occurs in the fall and then the juice is pressed, fermented, passed through a still and aged in oak barrels for two years (Fine or V.S), three years (Vieux or Reserve), four years (V.O or V.S.O.P) or six years (Extra, X.O or Très Vieux). Calvados Boulard is 100% Calvados Pays d’Auge, where only twenty-three percent of all Calvados is produced.

Calvados sounds Spanish because it is named for a rock off Arromanches by the Constituent Assembly in 1790. “Legend has it that this rock itself was called after a Spanish galleon with the Invincible Armada, the ‘San Salvador or ‘El Salvador, which sank as it sailed up towards the coast of England in 1588.” It is believed that the name of the boat was mistaken for “Calvador” and eventually “Calvados”. “While no archive reporting this shipwreck has been found, some old sea charts mention two ‘calva dorsa’, bald backs in Latin, corresponding to two strips of bare land on the clifftops between Port-en-Bessin and Arromanches. Navigators would take their bearings from these ‘calva dorsa’ the words being contracted to ‘Calvados’.”

Boulard says that while Calvados is a spirit that shines on its own, neat or on the rocks, it’s an extremely versatile spirit that mixes beautifully when crafting cocktails. He adds that Calvados is a welcome and delicious addition to myriad culinary recipes, savory and sweet alike.
