SCOTCH MEETS PORT WITH PORTUGUESE SMOOTH

By | Mixology News

Dewar's Portuguese Smooth Bottle, featured image

For the last 150 years the team at Dewar’s has been making some of the best whiskies available on the market.

Founded in 1846 as a humble spirit-merchant, John Dewar and his two sons quickly moved to blending their own whiskey, starting one of the oldest and most beloved distilleries worldwide.

You don’t get to be a globally renowned Whiskey name if you don’t innovate, and the team at Dewar’s has continued to take bold strides to push the boundaries of the spirits world. Their latest project has been Dewar’s Smooth range, a dynamic multiple-launch campaign uniting cultures and casks.

Dewar's Ginger Hightball Pour

Dewar’s Ginger Hightball Pour

The program launched with Dewar’s Caribbean Smooth. The expression is a blend of up to 40 single malt and grain whiskies that have been aged for at least eight years before starting their second aging process in ex-Caribbean Rum casks. The rum casks leave the spirit with notes of brown sugar, tropical fruits, and a caramel finish. The second was Dewar’s Ilegal Smooth, the world’s first Scotch Whiskey aged in Mezcal casks. Flavor notes include caramel, sliced green pepper, and a long wisp of smoke at the finish.

Dewar's Ginger Highball

Dewar’s Ginger Highball

As the next stop in the series, Dewar’s travels to the shores of Portugal with the exciting announcement of Portuguese Smooth aged in port casks. The double aging process creates an exceptionally smooth flavor with notes of ripe apricot, honeydew melon, red cherries, black currents, and heather honey with finishing notes of creamy vanilla.

Dewar's Portugeuse Old Fashioned

Dewar’s Portuguese Old Fashioned

Dewar’s has always stuck to a “drink it how you like it” approach, but with the Smooth line, in particular, the dramatic notes imparted by each cask open up endless doors for cocktail exploration. The brand recommends starting with a highball to begin exploring the depth each expression brings. For the Portuguese Smooth, start by trying it neat, then move to either a spiced or ginger highball. Once you’ve explored its subtleties, it makes a mean Old Fashioned!

Drink in History: The Negroni

By | Mixology News

Negroni, featured image

The beloved Negroni has quite the history.

Its savvy and sophisticated image has captivated those for years. It has a traceable history that goes back to the early 20th century.

The popular Italian cocktail had its starts in Florence in 1919 at Caffé Casoni. Count Camillo Negroni created the drink by asking the bartender, Fosco Scarselli, to intensify an Americano, his favorite cocktail. Fasco added gin rather than the normal soda water and garnished it with an orange instead of a lemon.

The drink was a success and the Negroni family founded Negroni Distillerie in Treviso, Italy. It was there they began to produce and sell the Antico Negroni, what we would call an RTD today.

The American actor Orson Welles was working on the film, Cagliostro in 1947, when he gave his take on this new drink called the Negroni. “The bitters are excellent for your liver; the gin is bad for you. They balance each other.”

There are many variations of the drink but the most well-known one includes gin, vermouth, Campari, and an orange peel. Mixing up this classic drink is simple, but the right ingredients are important. The key is finding the right gin-vermouth that doesn’t overpower the bitter and bold flavors of Campari. Impress those around you by shaking one up or ordering it at the bar.

Here’s our favorite recipe for the refreshingly bitter Negroni:

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. Gin
  • 1 oz. Campari
  • 1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
  • Orange Twist (for Garnish)

Preparation: Add all liquid ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Stir until chilled and strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Express an orange peel over the top of the drink and drop it in as a garnish.

BASTILLE 1789 whisky was created and launched in 2010 by the Daucourt family in the Cognac region of France and has already earned several industry awards.

The whisky has also earned considerable respect from whisky-lovers in France, where whisky drinking is much higher than in any other country.

The Daucourt family has been in the spirit distillation business for four generations. They don’t just stop at cognac either, the distillery has their earlier industry successes as well, including Jean-Marc XO and X-Rated Fusion Liqueur. Edouard Daucourt, Jean-Marc, and their nephew Charles created a French whisky inspired by their Irish mother, using the family’s traditional gooseneck pot still. Charles holds the role of the brand’s Master Distiller and brand manager in the U.S. The trio celebrates their dream becoming reality by creating a true French whisky.

Daucourt Family

According to Charles, “Maison Daucourt always selects the highest quality of malted barley and wheat grown in the northeast of France, where some of the world’s finest Scotch producers also source their malt. Bastille uses the purest water, naturally filtered for centuries through limestone springs.

The aging process is carried out in small batches, using different varieties of wooden casks, including the most luxurious French Limousin oak. The barrels are second fill, having previously aged some of the finest wines and spirits in France, each bringing their unique characteristics to our whiskies.”

CHILLIN’ WITH STEPHANIE TURNER

By | Mixology News

Chillin’ with Stephanie Turner

From bringing complex characters to life on screen, to writing raw emotional tales of all types of individuals; writer, actor, director, and filmmaker Stephanie Turner has made her way to the spotlight in the entertainment industry.

Originally from Long Beach, CA, Stephanie moved frequently throughout her childhood. She has lived in Dallas, TX, Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and San Diego, CA. This wide range of residence was all thanks to her father Norv Turner’s job (legendary NFL and 2x Super Bowl champion coach). Upon graduating high school in San Diego, Stephanie moved to Los Angeles to pursue study at the Baron/Brown Studio in Santa Monica.

Here she completed an intensive program in the Meisner technique of acting. Following the two-year program, she continued to ameliorate her acting ability at the Howard Fine School in Hollywood. From there, she booked her first Hollywood role as pop star Tanya Murphy in the New Line Cinema film “Monster-in-Law” where she appeared opposite Jane Fonda. Additional credits include: Universal Pictures “First Man,” CBS’ “CSI: NY,” “Scorpion,” ABC’s “What About Brian,” FX Network’s “Dirt,” and FOX’s “Bones.”

On the writing front, Stephanie made her debut with “Surrograte,” a 2016 short in which she also stars in and co-produced with Damien Chazelle. The short was nominated for a Bruce Corwin Award at the 2017 Santa Barbara International Film Festival for Best Live Action Short Film.

Most recently, Stephanie wrote, starred in, and made her directorial debut in “Justine” opposite Darby Stanchfield, Glynn Turman, and Josh Stamberg. The film follows Lisa Wade (Turner), a military wife who is forced to move in with her father-in-law after the death of her husband. As a single mom, Lisa is forced to take a job as a caretaker to a young girl named Justine, who has spina bifida.

Chilled sat with Turner to learn about her go-to drinks/eats, along with what is in store for her future career-wise.

Tell us about the projects you are working on.

My first feature film “Justine” is now streaming on Netflix. It is being distributed by Ava DuVernay’s company Array. I am currently in the process of developing a half-hour television series and preparing to make my next feature film.

With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your downtime?

Well I have two kids, so my downtime pretty much revolves around them. But if I do get some time on my own, I love to go out for a drink or dinner with friends.  And of course, I like to keep up on the latest TV shows and films.

When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

Jon & Vinny’s or Vincenti in Brentwood are some favorites, but I’m always up for trying somewhere new.  Petty Cash and their cauliflower nachos with a refreshing margarita are another go to option.

Chillin’ with Stephanie Turner

Chillin’ with Stephanie Turner

What types of dishes do you typically order?

I am not a huge meat eater; I think we all should eat a little less meat to help our environment. So, I typically order the meatless options, but I’m not one to shy away from much else. I love to indulge in a pasta dish from time to time and usually order lots of veggies.

Any favorite bars?

I love a bar with an old school vibe. Village Idiot or Snake Pit on Melrose are great local hangouts. Bar Toscana on the west side is usually crowded but if you can get a seat it’s always a nice atmosphere with really good wines.

What drinks do you order when out?

A lot of the time I stick to wine. But if I’m going for cocktails, I love a good mezcal cocktail or a freshly made Old Fashioned.

Do you prepare drinks at home?

Occasionally we will mix up drinks at home, we like to get those healthy fresh pressed juices and then mix them with alcohol.

Tell us about your home bar. What is it stocked with?

We’re pretty well stocked! We like to entertain and have friends over, so we keep it stocked to keep everyone happy. I like to have a few different red and white wine varietals. And then we have all the basic liquors on hand.

What is your favorite drink?

At home I typically drink wine. If I’m drinking white, it’s usually a lighter chardonnay or a Chablis. If I’m drinking red, it’s usually a more medium or full bodied red like a Cabernet Sauvignon.

Have you ever been a bartender?

No, I have not, but I have been a waitress at a sports bar, and I have to say I wasn’t very good at it.  I once spilled a beer on a pregnant lady and felt terrible.

If you could share a drink with anyone, who would it be?

Hmmmm, right now I will say…. Oprah!
