It wouldn’t be the start of summer without a frozen cocktail.

We have rounded up four delightful drinks that you can make in the comfort of your home to beat the heat. Frozen sippers are the perfect things to make when having an outdoor BBQ this season. Not only that, but frozen cocktails take very little effort — throw everything into a high-speed blender, and you’ll have a frosty glass in your hands in no time.

Celebrate Pride with Pride-Inspired Bottles

Weed Cellars Chenin Blanc Viognier, featured image

If you are unaware, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month.

One way, in particular, is supporting spirit brands that show their support and love for the community. There are tons of brands that have created limited-release Pride-inspired bottles. When drinking this month, be aware of what brands you are supporting, and if you can, opt for a Pride-inspired bottle. Sip on Pride cocktails all month long.

Here are six bottles you should go out and buy.

Weed Cellars Chenin Blanc Viognier

The brand is bringing a special type of white wine to the market. The rainbow-colored bottle is a blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Viognier wine. With each sip, you’ll get notes of pear, ginger, jasmine, and honey. The dry and fruity wine portrays celebrating life. It makes a great summer sipper as it pairs wonderfully with shrimp, scallops, and Thai food.

NEFT Pride Barrel

After the launch of their highly beloved Pride Barrel, NEFT Vodka decided to make the expression permanent. Consumers loved the packaging, which still paved homage to the identifiable metal barrel that concealed the original ultra-premium vodka. The barrel itself shows all colors of the rainbow and a community coming together — showing their support for equality. To show their commitment, the brand supports the community year-round with donations and sponsorships to organizations such as GLAAD and Project Angel Food.

Crystal Head

If Crystal Head Vodka didn’t already have eye-catching packaging, the launch of their limited-edition Pride bottle will definitely turn some heads. With the hope to bring together the creative spirit, Crystal Head released a red, yellow, green, blue, and purple Ombre bottle in celebration of equality and diversity. It’s filled with the original, distilled four times vodka. In addition to the launch, profits from this bottle are being donated to the Kaleidoscope Trust.

Stoli Harvey Milk Limited Edition Bottle

Stoli launched a Pride-inspired bottle to support the life and legacy of Harvey Milk. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected official in California. The mural on each bottle is by Paraguayan artist Oz Montania, featuring a popular Milk quote, “Hope will never be silent.” This bottle will help raise funds for the Harvey Milk Foundation.

Cardinal Spirits Pride Bottle

“This bottle of vodka won’t solve the world’s problems, but it will directly support the LGBTQ community, and that’s a damn good start.” With that Cardinal Spirits filled their first Pride Vodka bottle on June 26th, 2015, the same day the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. When buying their Pride Vodka, 10% of the proceeds go to an LBGTQ+ organization in each local region.

Celebrating Pride Month in the Bartending Industry

By | Mixology News

Ashley Lurie, featured image

In honor of Pride Month, we caught up with Chilled 100 members who identify in the LGBTQ+ community.

Ashley Lurie, a bartender in New York, gave us some insight into her bartending experience and ways to celebrate Pride. Although Pride is celebrated all year round, June is a designated, rainbow-filled month to educate and cherish the community.

This year, we celebrate through online conversation and in-person events. It’s a time to come together and accept people for who they are and how they identify themselves. After the year we have all endured, it’s more important now than ever before to support the community.

Ashley Lurie

Ashley Lurie

Tell us a little bit about how you got into bartending.

I started bartending by mistake — trial by fire. I always wanted to learn, and had a bunch of friends in the industry. I was working as a server in this upscale wine bar, and one day the main bartender didn’t show. The owner throws me back there and says “do the best you can!”

Boy….was I in for it! Needless to say, my friend got a lot of texts from me that day on how to make margaritas, martinis, and everything else! As the orders were coming in, I was just doing my research. About a month after that, I had my first feature in a magazine for low calorie summer coolers. And then I was off to the races!

Is there anything fun you (or your bar) are doing to celebrate Pride month?

Bars are really struggling, but so are LGBT non-profits. The pandemic has left a lot of people isolated, struggling with mental health issues. Small businesses are trying to do promotions but are just trying to make up for all the losses. We have a few cocktail specials on, but no events lined up. Here on the east coast, we are only just re-opening.

To compensate, I am personally matching dollar for dollar donations to the Trevor Project on my social media accounts. I am also collecting clothes, chest binders, and other gender-queer garments that some may not have access to (inspired by my trans son, Jax and a trans co-worker and friend) to donate to a local LGBTQ+ organization for homeless, queer youth. Everyone deserves to just feel comfortable in their own skin.

Is there any advice you would like to share with other members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in the service industry?

We have come a long way, baby!

I have been through my share of struggle in the business. Some situations I’ve personally dealt with on BOTH sides of the bar are men telling me that I can’t really be gay when I present as a feminine lesbian, being propositioned by guests, being turned down for jobs when my hair was buzzed short and my appearance didn’t fit the mold despite my resume, being slighted for loans when my wife and I were buying our restaurant, homophobic or transphobic rhetoric in the work place, or just generally not being taken seriously.

I have tried to take the high road in most situations and be aware of my safety and the safety of those around me when dealing with them. I’m grateful for all the work that has been done by the LGBTQ+ generations before me that have allowed me to learn to take a step back and deal with misinformation, under-exposure and ignorance — in an educated, collected manner. The same understanding we ask for as a community, we may occasionally need to express to others who maybe just don’t know that they have said or done anything wrong or were raised differently.

But there is still work to be done. Be strong, be wise, be kind. Try to educate your peers, your co-workers, and your guests even, if you need to. Try to find advocates and allies where you can. Be safe, be aware, and be heard. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, ask for help.

You are not alone and it does get better.

Are there any tips you can share for other bartenders and bar managers who want to make sure they’re creating a safe and diverse environment for their staff and guests?

IF YOU DONT KNOW, ASK— but ask appropriately. It’s not ok to ask a trans person where they are in their transition. It’s not ok to ask someone what role they play in their relationship. But if you are unsure of how to approach an issue, or you are looking for ways to be more inclusive, we as a community, LOVE that! I’ve found as of late, that a great way to approach new employees is to ask what people’s pronouns are. It displays respect and level of awareness that a lot of LGBTQ+ people aren’t accustomed to and is often a sigh of relief for our community in discovering a new ally.

Be aware of jokes or comments made in jest even to your cis, heterosexual coworkers. They may have a queer sibling, or child or friend and these comments can be offensive even when you may think they aren’t.

Encourage LGBTQ+ events in your establishment every so often. Buy queer, and queer ally, brands like Pride Vodka by Cardinal Spirits, Smirnoff, Brooklyn Brewery, etc. Get your brand ambassadors on board for POS items! People LOVE swag, even if it has a rainbow on it!

As a manager, be aware of your workplace dynamics. Watch interactions and try to be aware of any bullying or discrimination in your establishment. If you see something, say something— as the victim of these occurrences may be afraid to speak up especially if they are new. It is prudent to be able to recognize these situations and address them before they progress.

And again, be kind. It doesn’t take any extra effort to be a decent human. We are all taking it one day at a time. Our industry is a haven for people that don’t fit the mold. We are trend-setters, innovators, conversationalists. We are artisans and creators. We come in all different shapes and sizes, colors and backgrounds. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. I always think of the hospitality industry as the “Island of Misfit Toys” from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer— our differences are what makes us such a strong community. Treat everyone like family, and be the change.

Happy Pride Month!

A Guide to the Blush Pink Wine

By | Mixology News

Celebrate International Rosé Day, featured image

Happy International Rosé Day! Let’s look into this blush pink wine that has captured the hearts of many wine lovers.

Straddling the line between a white and a red, Rosé is a crisp and delicious summertime drink. While enjoyed all year round, Rosé is a great wine to sip on during the warm weather when red wine might not be your first choice.

Rosé comes from when the skins of red grapes are exposed to the wine for a short period. Compared to red wine that ferments for weeks or longer with the red grape skins, Rosé is steeped for around 1-20 hours. Depending on the winemaker, they will choose when they think the perfect color has been achieved.  The darker the Rosé, the longer the grapes have fermented.

Celebrate International Rosé Day

Celebrate International Rosé Day

There are plenty of Rosés to try on the market. Typically, they will have notes of red fruit, flowers, citrus, and melon. It tends to have a fruity flavor with a crisp brightness. When it comes to choosing a bottle, there will be a range from dry to sweet Rosé wines. When the wine is sweeter, the grapes used include White Zinfandel, Moscato, or White Merlot. For a drier Rosé, the grapes that are used are often Grenache, Syrah, Pinot Noir, etc.

Because Rosé is a cross between a white and a red, it often pairs great with most foods. This pairing includes spicy food, sushi, salads, BBQ favorites, different types of pasta, etc. Honestly, the possibilities are endless — sparkling Rosé, which is often a party drink, goes well with fruity desserts.

In recent years, Rosé has become increasingly popular; it’s not just because it looks pretty in pictures either. The light and refreshing beverage is a summer staple, but it’s also great for all-year sipping. This means you don’t need to buy this wine with a season in mind.

Now, celebrate the day with a bottle of this delicious blush pink wine.

Chillin’ With Noemi Gonzalez

By | Mixology News

Chillin’ With Noemi Gonzalez, featured image

Noemi Gonzalez is a natural born actress who showcases her talent across all types of productions including television, film, and theater.

At a young age, Noemi discovered how acting allows you to challenge internal pain. The most heightened sense of pain she endured stemmed from the tragic loss of her brother at eight years old. It was the strength she gained from that process that allowed her to focus her work on the goodness in humanity, empowerment, and connection; demonstrating how we can come together through dynamic characters and unforgettable stories.

She plans to use her public voice being an advocate for mental health, immigration rights, and Latinas in the industry. As a member of the queer community, she wants to give her time to queer-based organizations focusing on BIPOC while simultaneously using her influence to be an advocate for the LGBTQ community.

Gonzalez booked her first series regular role shortly after moving to Los Angeles, giving a standout performance as ‘Soli Gomez’ in Hulu’s “East Los High,” a series nominated for multiple Daytime Emmy Awards and Imagen Awards. Soon after, she joined “The Young and the Restless,” receiving rave reviews for her performance as ‘Mia Rosales.’ She has also appeared in Amazon’s “The Kicks,” Fox’s “Rosewood,” and Amazon’s “Dark/Web,” a phenomenal series nominated for multiple Daytime Emmys.

The upcoming star’s most recent work can be seen in the 0 brand-new Netflix series “Selena” (late 2020) as ‘Suzette Quintanilla.’ The series follows late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla and her rise to fame with Suzette by her side as a devoted sister and drummer in her band. Suzette is a stable force in Selena’s life, acting as a rock for her younger sister, and committed to her family’s well-being. Noemi even got to learn drums for the role!

On the film side, she can be seen in Paramount Pictures’ “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” and most recently, David Ayer’s “The Tax Collector” (August 2020) with Lana Parrilla and Shia LaBeouf. “The Tax Collector” quickly took the #1 spot on the “Watched at Home Top 20” list upon its debut.

Chilled sat with Noemi to talk about her love of tequila, mezcal and dive bars.

Tell us about the projects you are working on.

I’m currently promoting the premiere of part two of Selena The Series on Netflix while I prepare for a movie that I’m filming in Atlanta this summer, primero Dios!

With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your downtime?

To recharge, I make sure to relax by watching movies I grew up with, taking a bath soak with some essential oils and salts, and lastly hiking LA’s nature trails.

When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

Depends on the vibe I’m into or looking for… I like to go to the fine dining restaurants all over LA that I used to work at, their competitors, and hole-in-the-wall spots. My favorite restaurant to dine at is Farfalla Trattoria and my favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant is Spicy BBQ Restaurant- you want the Northern Thai Noodles.

Chillin’ With Noemi Gonzalez

What types of dishes do you typically order?

First, whatever they are known for. Then I like fresh seafood, spicy dishes, soups, and dishes where the main ingredient is so good all they need to do is finish with lemon, EVOO, and salt.

Any favorite bars?

Eastside Luv and La Descarga.

What drinks do you order when out? Favorite drink?

I have Tequila over ice with a lime or Mezcal with an orange slice. Favorites in the past were Eastside and Bijou Martini.

Do you prepare drinks at home?

More so for guests than for myself.

Tell us about your home bar. What is it stocked with?

Tequila, Mezcal – 400 Conejos, Vodka, and Gin.

Have you ever been a bartender?

I can’t say that I have!

If you could share a drink with anyone, who would it be?

Celebrate Pride with Andrew Rannells and Ketel One

By | Mixology News

Andrew Rannells and Fanny Chu at the 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards

Film and Broadway star, Andrew Rannells teamed up with Ketel One Vodka and Bartender Fanny Chu to develop a Pride Cocktail.

Rannells has racked up an impressive range of credits including film appearances in The Intern, A Simple Favor, and The Boys In The Band, television roles in Girls, The New Normal, Big Mouth, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and much more. The actor has also voiced in video games and held roles in theater productions including The Book of Mormon (for which he was nominated for three awards and won a Grammy), Hamilton, Falsettos, and more.

To celebrate Pride month the actor worked with bartender Fanny Chu and Ketel One vodka to create the LGBTini. We caught up with him to hear about the partnership and how he’s celebrating Pride Month.

Ketel One Pride Summer Cooler

Ketel One Pride Summer Cooler

Tell us about your partnership with Ketel One – how did it come about?

I first started working with Ketel One Vodka in March 2021 for National Cocktail Day. Together, we announced the launch of their program called Makers of Marvelous, which celebrates the hospitality community and gives back to bartenders for their craft, creativity and service.

I’ve worked in the service industry myself, so it is important to me to work with brands who are giving back to the hospitality community, especially given the many changes that happened this past year due to COVID-19.

Talk to us about the specialty Ketel One cocktail you created alongside Queer bartender Fanny Chu.

Ketel One Vodka has been a longstanding partner of GLAAD and the LGBTQ+ community. This year I was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award, so it only made sense for us to team up with Fanny Chu to create the official cocktail of the awards.

The cocktail cocktail is called the LGBTini and is a twist on the iconic martini (which is having a comeback!). It’s made with Ketel One Vodka, orange-spiced vermouth and some olive brine.

How was it working with Fanny and Ketel One Vodka?

Ketel One’s Makers of Marvelous program is one that celebrates hospitality workers who are responsible for making our cocktail experiences unforgettable. Fanny truly is one of those people. She is not only incredible at making cocktails, but she also goes above and beyond in making sure that there are inclusive spaces for the LGBTQ+ community to socialize.

What did you take away from the experience?

Through my partnership with Ketel One Vodka, I learned that the hospitality community is made of vibrant individuals who are responsible for so many of our experiences when it comes to drinking and dining. Yes, you can make a cocktail at home, but chances are it won’t taste as good as when your favorite bartender makes it for you.

Have you ever been a bartender?

I have never been a bartender but I have worked in many restaurants in my early days in New York.

How will you be celebrating PRIDE Month?

It’s great to see that folks are able to get out into the world again but feel like there is still a lot of trepidation about large crowds. So, for me, Pride is going to be focused on reconnecting in small groups.  But I’m still feeling very proud.
