Marie Brizard announces the winner of the 2021 Toast to HERStory Competition.

After a competitive virtual final, judges Julie Reiner and Dale DeGroff had their work cut out for them choosing an overall winner with so many fantastic cocktails and stories.

“This is the second year for the Marie Brizard Toast to HERStory Challenge and it has been emotionally charged for some of the participants. It has opened doors to memories for many of the bartenders of the women who have inspired them in their careers or supported them on a personal level. For the judges, it has been a different kind of a challenge. Judging not only the quality of the drinks created, but the journey the bartenders embarked on to get to the intersection of mixology and memory and arrive at a good story,”

“The old woman is hunched as she slowly crosses the German train platform. The combination of her long skirts and a heavy bag on her right shoulder help to hide her noticeable limp. Her gray hair is slipping from its loose bun as she passes right by the Gestapo agent, who barely registers her presence; he’s scanning the crowd for threats to the Vichy French regime and one dangerous spy in particular: “Artemis.” The Nazis have been searching for the American spy code-named Artemis for three years now, and although she is a plain-looking woman in her thirties, she can be distinguished by her prosthetic left leg. Many hours and many kilometers pass before the old woman is finally able to relax. Once she has safely locked herself in the attic of a French resistance fighter’s house, she finally begins to undress, wash away her carefully constructed fake wrinkles and gray hair paint, and remove her wooden leg. American-born spy Virginia Hall has made it back into occupied France, where she will become one of the greatest foreign leaders of the French Resistance in World War II and one of the most successful American spies of all time.

Artemis’ Flip is an homage to Virginia Hall, her love of France, and her commitment to freedom. Like Virginia, this cocktail is nuanced, intense, and cosmopolitan. Bittersweet chocolate, ripe banana, creamy vanilla, smoky yet confectionary mezcal, and a subtle touch of habanero combine to make a libation that is rich and complex without being overly sweet.”

Global Sip: Panama Rums to Try

By | Mixology News

Panama Rums to Try, featured image

Panama’s culture heavily influences its food and drink.

Fresh fruit is in abundance in Panama, so most of their drinks have some form of a fresh component. Known as the transit country because of the Panama Canal, Panama has even more to offer. From its beautiful attractions and wildlife, Panama is a great place to visit. Next time in Panama, try one of these rums we have rounded up. Not only does rum make a powerful sipping spirit, but using rum as a base for cocktails can really elevate a drink.

We have rounded up some of our favorite brands that were born in Panama.

SelvaRey Rum

Coming in four expressions: white, chocolate, coconut, and owner’s reserve, SalvaRey Rum is co-owned by Bruno Mars. SalvaRey loosely translates to King of the Jungle. The brand was founded in 2014, and shortly after is when singer Bruno Mars joined. Panama has a terroir that is perfect for growing sugarcane. The White is ideal for cocktails like Mojitos, Cuba Libres, etc., while the Chocolate rum has quickly become one of the most awarded flavored spirits. The Coconut expression has pineapple and key-lime notes for a tropical paradise flavor, and the Owner’s Reserve makes for great sipping.

Grander Rum

This single-origin rum is aged, distilled, and bottled in Panama. It’s made from molasses that is from locally grown sugar cane, yeast strain, local water, and the barrel also provides flavor. With Grander Rum, which comes in five expressions, the barrel plays a significant role in the development. The distillers have used barrels that have previously held sherry, or ex-rye whiskey and ex-scotch whiskey barrels. Using these types of barrels provides an additive flavor and gives the rum color and aromas. Grander Rum ships via the Panama Canal to markets around the world.

Ron Abuelo Rum

Ron Abuelo believes, “Where there is sugar cane, there should be rum.” This mantra is exactly what the three sons of Don José Varela Blanco thought in 1936 when they used the sugar from their dad’s mill and started distilling alcohol. Distilled from 100% Panamanian Estate grown sugar cane honey, this rum is worth the hype. Their Añejo is a blend of aged rums that have spent a minimum of five years in American Oak casks. Their other nine expressions have the same type of commitment and love when

Mastering the Pool Cocktail

By | Mixology News

Panama Rums to Try, featured image

There is nothing better than sitting by the pool on a hot summer’s day, with a cocktail, of course.

Something about this scenario makes booze taste better, but mastering the perfect pool cocktail can be difficult. For our home bartenders, we have rounded up a few things to keep in mind when creating poolside cocktails.

Balancing Sweetness

Pool cocktails have the stigma of being overly sweet and overly sugary. The sweetness of a cocktail will be dependent on who is drinking it. If you ever run into the case where the cocktail you’ve made is on the sweeter side, add a few drops of bitters to balance the flavor. There are tons of variations and flavors of bitters on the market, so it may even add a nice twist.

For those who like their drinks extra sweet and need a little more, add syrup to the cocktail. Whether it’s a simple syrup or a flavored one, it’s an easy fix. You could even add a liqueur to a not-sweet enough cocktail.

Refreshing Cocktails

In the summer, and by the pool especially, having a refreshing cocktail is a must. Save the cinnamon and rosemary for the winter, and let’s bring out the mint and cucumber. It’s also crucial to keep the drinks well chilled in the heat. You can even get fancy with ice cubes and infuse them with summer flavors. Add herbs and fruit into ice cubes trays; it’ll not only keep the drink refreshing, but it’ll add a little flavor to the cocktail.

Tiki Cocktails

Summer screams tiki cocktails. A tropical drink is a sweet addition to any pool day. When creating tiki cocktails, start with rum. Not all tiki drinks contain rum, but with tropical-inspired cocktails, rum makes a good base. Tiki cocktails that work in the summer usually have fresh juice or layered flavors. Pineapple, orange, or passion fruit juice all add a tropical flavor to any tiki cocktail. The next thing to keep in mind is adding spices or herbs. This addition can come from the item itself, or syrups and flavored liqueurs can add it as well.

Mix it Up

An easy way to add a crisp kick to a summer cocktail is using fresh-pressed juices or purées. Homemade will always provide optimal flavor, but some brands offer garden-fresh ingredients. Swapping out store-bought peach juice with a peach purée can elevate the taste of a cocktail.

Here are some of our favorite pool cocktails.
