Transform Your Next Cocktail With Maraska Maraschino

By | Mixology News

Since the beginning of the 16th century Maraska Maraschino liqueur has been made from distilled Dalmatian Maraska tart cherries.

Located on the Adriatic coast in Zadar, Croatia, Maraska makes its Maraschino liqueur from cherries grown in their own orchard. The liqueur wasn’t exported until the 18th century, but once the brand made its way out into the world it quickly became a beloved favorite of drinkers everywhere.

Maraska Maraschino

Maraska Maraschino

Not only was Maraska Maraschino popular, it was popular with royalty. In 1871 Queen Victoria had all of the warships stationed in the Mediterranean withdrawn to transport a shipment of Maraschino liqueur to the British court.

“Many of Maraska’s products have become well-known among the mixology community for their versatility as modifiers in cocktails”
– Mark Tucker, Executive Vice President at Worldwide Libations

“In particular this includes the Maraschino Liqueur which is produced from Maraska’s Estate-grown Marasca cherries which come the Adriatic Coast of Croatia. There is even a small a Maraschino Museum in Zadar with artifacts celcbrating Maraska’s history of making Maraschino Liqueur.”

Zadar Cocktail

Zadar Cocktail

Maraska’s Maraschino Liqueur is often considered a bartenders secret weapon because even a small amount can make a dynamic impact on a cocktail. “It is a staple in classics like the Hemingway Daiquiri, Aviation, Last Word and Martinez,” noted Tucker, adding that even a 1/4 oz. pour can add brightness and a touch of sweetness to a cocktail.

While in the US Maraska’s Maraschino is most commonly used as a cocktail ingredient, in much of Eastern Europe and Croatia its served chilled as an aperitif. Drink in History: The Boulevardier

By | Mixology News

The Boulevadier, featured image

Smoky, strong, and bittersweet, the Boulevardier is probably the best cocktail to cozy up to on a chilly night.

This mysterious drink, whose name loosely translated means “a wealthy, fashionable socialite,” is a subtle combination of bourbon, sweet vermouth, and Campari that mixes impressively yet, it’s a breeze to prepare.

Sometimes mistakenly called a whiskey Negroni, the Boulevardier is actually believed to predate the Negroni. According to Dave Karraker, director of public relations for Campari America, it maintains the bittersweet character of the Negroni but isn’t as embracing.  “The Boulevardier has a deeper, smoother flavor than a Negroni thanks to the aged whiskey, which replaces the gin in the classic recipe,” he said.

Dating back to 1927, the Boulevardier is credited to Harry McElhone, the founder, and proprietor of Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. As one of many bartenders whose careers were cut short by Prohibition, McElhone escaped the U.S. to settle in Europe. There he combined U.S. cocktailing techniques with spirits, such as Campari, that you’d never come across in the States back then.

Although the Boulevardier recipe is not mentioned in McElhone’s book, “Barflies and Cocktails” which is packed with 300 cocktail recipes, the sophisticated cocktail is mentioned briefly in a small paragraph where he cites, “Now is the time for all good barflies to come to the aid of the party since Erskine Gwynne crashed in with his Boulevardier Cocktail: 1/3 Bourbon whisky, 1/3 Campari, 1/3 Italian vermouth.”

The fact that the cocktail wasn’t included in his book could be because McElhone seemed to defer to Gwynne, a wealthy young American in Paris starting a literary magazine, as the actual inventor of the drink. His magazine, modeled after The New Yorker, was called The Boulevardier, and it was advertised on a full page in the back of “Barflies and Cocktails.”  Although it’s not clear if the magazine had any sort of lasting impact on the world of literature, the fantastic drink Gwynne shared with McElhone went on to be quite successful.

Like many classics, the Boulevardier is flexible and allows you to play with the formula to suit your taste. Although the most common theory is that the cocktail is a variation of the Negroni, Karraker said you could get good results by experimenting with the classic recipe to create variations.

“You can change out the whiskey to create unique tastes, using bourbon, rye, or Canadian whiskey,” he said. He also suggested exploring the use of dry vermouth rather than the traditional sweet, red vermouth. There seems to be no wrong here because no matter what kind of Boulevardier-type you shake up, anyone is sure to please.

“With my job, I drink a lot of Negronis, but I like to mix it up with a Boulevardier pretty regularly.  I like the deep toasted caramel notes a bourbon can bring to the drink.”
– Harry McElhone

Chillin’ With Lyndsy Fonseca

By | Mixology News

Chillin' With Lyndsy Fonseca, featured image

Born in Oakland, California, award-winning actress Lyndsy Fonseca was raised in the Los Angeles area.

Growing up as a professionally trained dancer, she spent hours in dance studios, competing, and touring before landing her first big break in television at just 14 years old on “The Young and the Restless.” The role forever changed her career trajectory, and she has been working in film and television ever since. While bringing characters to life and storytelling are two of Lyndsy’s greatest passions, she has a huge place in her heart for giving back. Over the years, she has raised money for orphanages in Haiti through CrowdRise, donated to No Kid Hungry, and is passionate about animal rights and supporting non-profit animal rescue organizations.

From starring in blockbuster films to portraying a myriad of characters in critically acclaimed television series, Lyndsy has been entertaining audiences for nearly two decades, and she is not letting off the gas anytime soon.

This year, Lyndsy can be seen starring in the highly anticipated, Disney+ action/comedy series “Turner & Hooch” opposite Josh Peck. Created and Executive Produced by Matt Nix, the series is inspired by the 1989 iconic Tom Hanks film of the same name. It follows the Turner family (Peck, Fonseca) as they set out to solve the mystery of their father’s death (Hanks). Lyndsy is a scene-stealer as Laura Turner, Scott Turner’s animal-loving sister, who ultimately becomes immersed in the investigation of her father’s past. “Turner & Hooch” premiered on Disney+ July 16, 2021.

In the film realm, one of her most prominent roles was as Katie Deauxma in Lionsgate’s “Kick-Ass” and “Kick-Ass 2” opposite Aaron Taylor Johnson. The movies grossed a combined $156,984,000+ at the global box office. She also appeared in MGM’s “Hot Tub Time Machine” opposite John Cusack and Sebastian Stan.

Listing all of Fonseca’s accolades would take quite a while. So, to touch base on a few, there is her 3 Choice TV Actress: Action nominations at the Teen Choice Awards in 2011, 2012, and 2013 for her work on the hit CW series “Nikita.” She was also nominated alongside the cast of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” at the 2008 and 2009 Screen Actors Guide Awards in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

As a new mom, Lyndsy is fascinated with child psychology and conscious parenting. She acknowledges her participation as a consumer and student of child science; being introspective about her own childhood and raising children in today’s climate.

Chilled sat with Fonseca to learn about her treasured dining establishments, imbibing preferences, and what she learned from the Covid-19 mania.

Tell us about the projects you are working on.

I recently wrapped a feature film called Spinning Gold. I play a real living person, Joyce Biawitz, who co-managed KISS and Donna Summer. The film takes place in the ’70s. Throughout filming, I was surrounded by Grammy winners and Broadway stars. I was in heaven watching all of these creative people around me.

With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your downtime?

My husband Noah Bean and I have a 3-year-old, so between juggling our careers that take us all over the world and our kid, we rarely have free time. Having a date night or an afternoon for yoga is a real treat!

When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

When we are in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, we love a date night at our local spot, Little Beast. We always love trying to find the best sushi in any city or town we go to. We recently went to Miku in Vancouver with friends.

What types of dishes do you typically order?

I’m a pescatarian so I’m always on the hunt for plant-based restaurants, and I love Mediterranean food. I mean, I really will try anything, so I love discovering new dishes.

Any favorite bars?

I love a good bar. There’s just that thing you cannot quite explain when you find a little gem of a bar. When we were doing a play in Scotland at the Edinburgh theater festival, we tried to find the most authentic bars with no tourists.

Chillin' With Lyndsy Fonseca

Chillin’ With Lyndsy Fonseca

What drinks do you order when out? Favorite drink?

If I’m eating dinner, I tend to order a wine that pairs well with the food. If I am indulging in cocktail hour, I usually order a gin, dirty martini. If it is after dinner, I sometimes try bourbon or whiskey.

Do you prepare drinks at home?

I do like to make drinks at home. We always keep red wine in the house. During quarantine last year, we had some friends stay with us who are NYC bartenders. I finally learned how to make the perfect martini from my friend Chris.

Tell us about your home bar. What is it stocked with?

We have it all!! I love when friends bring drinks over that I haven’t tried before. We have a beautiful crystal decanter from my mother-in-law that’s been in the family since she was very young, and I love it.

Have you ever been a bartender?

I have never been a bartender! Having friends who have bartended has made me appreciate the craft!
