Drink In History: The Jack Rose

By | Mixology News

Drink In History: The Jack Rose , featured image

Rosy and smooth, the Jack Rose’s history isn’t as sweet as the cocktail might have you think.

There are various theories about this drink’s origin, the most common being that it was invented and named after the infamous gambler and accused murderer, Bald Jack Rose, who became somewhat of a celebrity in New York during the early 1900s.

Another theory is that the Jack Rose was invented by restaurateur Joseph P. Rose – who once held the title of the World’s Champion Mixologist- from Newark, New Jersey and named by him in honor of a defendant in a trial that was held at the courthouse in his city. Others believe the Old Waldorf Bar Days (1931), authored by Albert Stevens Crockett, which states the drink was named after the pink Jacquemot rose, a flower grown in France. The simplest explanation would be that it was named after the flush of color from its ingredients, but despite the different angles of the Jack Rose’s whereabouts, Harvey’s Famous Restaurant in Washington, D.C. first claimed to be the originator of the cocktail.

As it was popular in the 1920s and 1930s, the drink made an appearance in Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 classic, The Sun Also Rises. When the narrator Jake Barnes is waiting for Lady Brett Ashley to arrive at the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, he’s seen sipping a Jack Rose at the bar.

With its delicate glow and refreshing taste, this classic potion uses raspberry syrup or Chambord to get its blushed complexion. Its traditional ingredients include applejack, grenadine and lime or lemon juice.

Though there are slight variations of the Jack Rose, Brand Manager for Chambord Trademark at Brown-Forman, Sean Wachsman said Chambord enhances the drink’s flavors instead of altering its properties. “Chambord replaces the grenadine bringing a deeper, richer color to the cocktail, in addition to more sweet, cognac and berry notes,” he said. “It’s very smooth with a consistent layer of flavor.”

As it’s considered a basic drink, the Jack Rose is quick and simple to shake up. According to Wachsman, “It’s flavorful and light from a sessionability standpoint.” With its satisfying pucker, the Jack Rose goes down easily, making it a comfortable cocktail to sip on during a fun, low-key night.

Each cocktail uses stunning autumnal ingredients to highlight the crisp, premium vodka made from pure spring water and highest-quality distilled whey.

Broken Shed’s award-winning vodka is made with high-quality ingredients before being distilled three times for the best mix of smoothness and flavor. The full-bodied spirit has a warm, pleasant finish and is naturally non-GMO and gluten free. Our bartenders loved how easy it was to mix with, noting that the versatile vodka was just as easy to drink neat as it was in the cocktails they crafted.

The Savory Vodka Cocktail You Need For National Vodka Day

By | Mixology News

Steak & Chopin Potato, featured image

We’re counting down to National Vodka Day (October 4th) with a look at one of our favorite vodka lines, Chopin.

Based in the picturesque village of Krzesk, Poland, Chopin Vodka makes stunning luxury vodka using traditional methods. In 1992, founder and CEO Tadeusz Dorda debuted the first ultra-luxury vodka packaged in their patented frosted bottles with clear windows; the launch redefined the vodka industry for good.

Vodka used to be defined by its mixability – how well it vanished into a drink – it was meant to be devoid of color, flavor, odor or distinctive character. But when you’re making high-quality vodka, like Chopin, this definition is simply incorrect. Chopin sources most of their ingredients from within 18 miles of their distillery allowing their vodkas to be made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Much of the production process is still done by hand and in small batches.

The brand produces a variety of vodkas including three styles made from single ingredients: potato, rye, and wheat. Each style has its own unique flavor profile and showcases how unique vodka can be. Chopin’s Potato Vodka (highlighted in the cocktail below) is the most awarded potato-based vodka on the market. The creamy, full-bodied flavor make it ideal in a wide range of cocktails as well as for sipping neat or in a martini. The spirit has a long, clean finish with no burn and a subtle green apple and vanilla aroma on the nose.

Chopin’s Rye Vodka highlights the spicy flavor of Polish rye, with a peppery profile idea for both sweet and savory cocktails. Slight aromas of rye bread delight the nose while a vibrant pepper flavor opens on the palate. The medium body leads to a short, crisp finish that pairs well with anything featuring ginger, peppers, and fresh berries. The lightest and sweetest of the three is the Wheat Vodka, which has a floral bouquet with a light mouthfeel, sweet notes of caramel and a gentle finish.

3 Single Serve Sake Options To Enjoy This Sake Day

By | Mixology News

Little Sumo Sake featured image

Traditionally, sake brewing season starts in October and runs through April – which is why we celebrate Sake Day every October 1st.

This Sake Day, celebrate with single-serve sake options. Recently, many sake lines have come out with single serve packaging that can be re-used or recycled. Not only are they attractively packaged, but they allow you to try out a few different styles before committing to a full bottle! Check out a few of our current favorites!

Maneki Wanko “Lucky Dog”

This crisp, smooth sake is packaged in a single serve carton for an easy to pack beverage that can go with you just about anywhere. The name and imagery is a play on the traditional Lucky Cat, or Maneki Neko. The futsushu sake has notes of dry grapes and bananas with an ABV of 13.2%. Pair the easy-drinking sake with rich foods, avocado, and white fish.

Yuki No Tenshi “Snow Angel”

Best served with BBQ, curry, ice cream, and spicy foods, Snow Angel’s aromas of cantaloupe and lily flowers open this delightfully smooth, creamy and fully bodied sake. The refreshing sake is a silky, delicare, and unfiltered nigori style that  is meant to represent the snow of Hokkaido. On the palate notes of muscat grape, strawberry, and a milky cream shine through.

Chibi Zumo “Little Sumo”

This Junmai genshu sake bosts an impressive 18% ABV, making it truly a small but strong expression. Inspired by sumo wrestlers, the sake is a genshu, or undiluted, spirit hence the strong ABV. Despite it’s strength, the sake is smooth and rich with notes of Asian pear, almonds, and banana that pair well with cheese, and other fatty and rich foods.
