Monkey in Paradise Screwdriver

Looking for vacation in a glass?

Even a simple Screwdriver is a tropical delight when made with Monkey In Paradise Premium Vodka. When it comes to making a Screwdriver, quality counts; fresh juice and premium vodka are essential!

Monkey In Paradise Family Bottles Krall

Monkey In Paradise Family

Monkey in Paradise is distilled and carbon filtered seven times to achieve the smoothest, purest vodka possible. The distillation process starts with a proprietary five ppm reverse osmosis system that demineralizes the water. This unique method ensures they’re starting with a truly pure base. The vodka is filtered in copper stills allowing the sulfite levels to be naturally reduced for a pure, clean taste. Finally, they charcoal filter and allow the alcohol and water to rest together at four different proof levels. This process of additional filtering and age settling results in a delicious, award winning spirit that’s perfect for toasting National Screwdriver Day.

Chilled 100 Spotlight Colin Dietz featured image

New Jersey based Colin Deitz was working in the hospitality industry for 3 years before he got thrown behind the bar for the first time.

But once he got a taste of life behind the stick, he never went back. Today he has 17 years behind the bar, and is happily continuing to pursue his creative drive by mixing up fabulous cocktails.

Chilled 100 Mixologist Colin Dietz

Chilled 100 Mixologist Colin Dietz

Where do you tend bar now?  What makes it unique?  Distinctive drinks, décor, a certain vibe?

My current home is behind the bar at Tapastre in Somerville NJ.  We are a small local community craft beer and cocktail bar.  In the past couple years we have been making a mark in the central NJ area.  Guests love to come check out our basement/speakeasy vibe for a nice date night out or to enjoy good beer and cocktails for a night on the town.  Our cocktail menu changes seasonally so we are always coming up with new ideas and recipes.  We also like to think outside the box at times such as garnishing a cocktail with a mini peanut butter & jelly sandwich or a candied piece of bacon for a bacon fat washed old fashioned.

Who has been most influential in your development as a bartender? A mentor, a parent, a fellow bartender, and why?

For me, all the different palates of the guests influence me to keep creating new ideas.  New spirits are always coming out and that allows us as bartenders to introduce new flavor profiles to guests and have them explore combinations they haven’t before. It is an experience that I love being a bartender.  Also my fellow bartenders are always inspiring me to create, everyone has their own take and twist on how they make their cocktails and it is inspiring.

Do you have any advice for novice/at home bartenders?

Ask questions. Ask your bartender how they came up with the cocktail you love. Learn about the spirits they use. Take the time to use fresh ingredients at home and splurge on having good cocktail equipment for your home bar.  In this day and age, a lot of bartenders have an Instagram page where they post their cocktails and ingredients and its a nice way to explore new recipes.

What is your favorite ingredient right now and why?

Right now I think passionfruit is my favorite ingredient. For me it is an all year round fruit. It works well with most spirits and it can be used in every thing from Tiki style cocktails to matching well with winter ingredients.

How do you go about creating a new cocktail? Is there a specific process or simply a moment of inspiration?

Although a simple moment of inspiration does occur often, I do have a process for creating new cocktails. First and foremost it depends on the season that it is.  Next I like to think of the flavor profile id like to work with basing it off a classic cocktail build.  I think of what cocktail would be the best vessel and take that classic and put my own twist on it.  Another process I like to do is take a hard ingredient to work with and try and make it work or even using a spirit not familiar with and challenging myself to work with it.

Do you have a special technique you use or a tip for making a particular drink?

Balance. I believe a good cocktail should be balanced.  I also have a technique while making a cocktail that I like to call the “story”. If I can achieve a beginning, middle, and an end in the taste profile then I have made a successful cocktail.

Where do you see the bartending/cocktail culture headed?

I think the cocktail culture will stay strong. There are new spirits being released all the time and a lot of them breaking the norm.  I also believe there is more of a determination to bring cocktails and bartending back to its glory since the pandemic happened.  It changed the industry forever.  Also from that I think more accessible forms of cocktails will keep emerging, from canned cocktails to cocktails to go.

Why Nolet’s Reserve Gin Is The Must-Buy This Season

By | Mixology News

NOLET’S Reserve Gin, featured image

Some spirits are an indulgence worth investing in, and NOLET’S Reserve Gin is among one of the finest examples.

Crafted over a period of four decades, NOLET’S Reserve is an incredibly complex and intense gin like nothing else on the market. We caught up with the brand to learn more about this dynamic spirit.

What inspired the creation of NOLET’S Reserve Gin?

Inspired to create a gin like no other, NOLET’S Reserve Gin is the personal creation of Carolus Nolet Sr., tenth generation owner of the Nolet Distillery. NOLET’S Reserve captures the aromas of a variety of spices and botanicals, allowing for an intense, layered and long-lasting finish. “NOLET’S Reserve is a gin that is unbelievably complex in its character. It is something my father wanted to leave behind as a legacy of his 50 years of distilling experience. He aimed to create a product that we believe is the best tasting gin in the world. This is his masterpiece” says Carl Nolet, Jr.

The recipe for this exceptional gin has been perfected over four decades – can you share a little about the process of creating such a masterpiece?

In Carolus Sr.’s own words, NOLET’S Reserve is “a gin of unprecedented excellence that builds on our family’s rich history.” Every batch of NOLET’S Reserve is distilled and bottled at Nolet Distillery in Schiedam, Holland, using a recipe perfected over four decades by Carolus Sr.

NOLET’S Reserve Gin is crafted with a secret botanical base reflecting over 330 years of experience. Each botanical is individually macerated and then distilled using the custom Distilleerketel #19, allowing for a precise and an intense expression of its characteristics. The signature botanicals found in NOLET’S Reserve are far too delicate to survive traditional distillation. A premiere French flavor house, long partnered with the Nolet family, captures the essence of each, and delivers the precious liquids to the Nolet Distillery. The separately distilled signature botanicals are infused and blended in steel tanks in a carefully conceived order creating something complex, and masterful. The spirit rests for days, allowing the heady aromas and flavors to marry. Carolus Sr. personally tastes and approves every batch of NOLET’S Reserve Gin before it is bottled.

Can you share a little bit about the choice of saffron and verbena as the signature botanicals?

Botanical ingredients define the character of a gin. For centuries, that character has been dominated by juniper berries: piney, prickly, bitter. The Nolets didn’t care for the juniper‐heavy taste of classic gins; they wanted to challenge themselves, and the industry, with a new expression of the spirit’s potential. Carolus Sr. was gently coaxing an idea that had been growing  in his imagination for forty years. Eventually, he found the ideal botanical expression for that silken luxury: warm and spicy saffron (the most expensive botanical in the world), and exquisite verbena (an herb known for its delicate citrus flavor and soothing nature). Carolus Sr. combined the two fragile ingredients with a selection of classic botanicals. The recipe that resulted represents the ambition of his lifetime: NOLET’S Reserve Gin.

For you, what’s the ideal way to enjoy NOLET’S Reserve Gin this holiday season?

NOLET’S Reserve is the quintessential sipping gin. According to Carolus, Sr., “The Reserve is a gin for celebrating moments, whether those entail reflecting on one’s day, relaxing by the fire or simply taking a well-deserved break. Of course, you can also choose to share this moment with cherished friends – but in my opinion, with all its layers and complexities, NOLET’S Reserve is best enjoyed in quiet solitude.”

Carl Jr. shares, “I like to drink NOLET’S Reserve in times of self-reflection, which often happens during the holidays; those times where you ask yourself questions like, ‘What have I accomplished?’, ‘What do I still want to accomplish?’, ‘How do I become a better husband, father, and businessman?’”

Please share any quotes or fun facts about the brand.

NOLET’S Reserve bottles are released in limited quantities annually at the discretion of Carolus Sr. Elegant and striking, the bottle for NOLET’S Reserve Gin is made from thick, dark glass to protect the precious liquid and botanicals inside. The family’s heritage is proudly displayed through the crest on the metal cap, and the lineage of ten generations is showcased along the sides of the bottle. Each bottle is individually numbered by hand and adorned with Carolus Sr.’s signature. NOLET’S Reserve is presented in a gold gift box and accompanied by a brochure that explains the gin’s heritage.

5 Cosmopolitan Recipes to Celebrate Sex and the City’s Reboot

By | Mixology News

Sex in the CIty Cocktails featured image

And Just Like That… Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York return to the Big Apple big screen for the much-anticipated Sex and the City reboot – premiering December 9th on HBO Max.

The ten-episode revival will focus on the three fictional characters (sans Samantha Jones) as they navigate the journey of an even more complicated reality of “life” in their 50s. It will also allow us to reflect on everything Carrie and her crew taught us about dating, designer footwear, and the famed Cosmopolitan cocktail.

Sex and the City created a fashion for The Cosmopolitan as the “core four” were frequently seen sipping the pink drink at every bar, restaurant, and elite event across New York City.

In honor of the show’s reboot, we’re sharing five fun twists on the original Cosmo recipe for fans to craft at home. Each variation pays homage to the separate personas we prize so much, while holding onto the staple ingredients – cough Cointreau and cranberry juice – that make-up the classic cocktail.

*Pro-tips per award-winning mixologist Elyse Blechman:

  • “When shaking: Remember to wake the drink to life, do not rock it to bed.”
  • “Flame the oils of your orange zest twist with a lighter over the drink if you want to impress your friends and become the center of attention at the party.”

As Carrie famously claimed, “They say nothing lasts forever; dreams change, trends come and go, but friendships never go out of style.” And neither does the Cosmo…

The Uptown Spice

  • 1 oz. Cranberry Juice

Preparation: Combine all ingredients into a shaker; add ice cubes and shake. Fine strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with a mint sprig and/or chili salt rim.

  • 2/3 oz. Violet Liqueur
  • 1/4 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

This creation is easy and juicy – similar to self-sufficient and sexually adventurous Samantha Jones. You’ll be sure to do a double-take (and taste) of her.

  • 2 oz. Cranberry Juice
  • 1/2 oz. Orange Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

The Celtic Cosmo

Female (and head-) strong like Miranda Hobbes, this Irish-rooted riff builds fruit-flavored complexity upon the spicy “ginger” notes of the grain whiskey.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 oz. Cointreau
  • 1/2 oz. Apple Cider

Bold and tangy, this New York “based” nightcap will have you feeling frisky (from the whiskey) and strong in Mr. Big’s character on the couch.

  • 1 oz. Cointreau
  • 1 oz. Dry Vermouth
  • 1/2 oz. Cranberry Juice

Celebrating 225 Years With Santa Teresa Rum

By | Mixology News

Santa Teresa Distillery featured image

Venezuelan based Hacienda Santa Teresa has been operating since 1796, this year they celebrated their 225th birthday.

In 1830 the house began producing rum and hasn’t looked back since. The line’s signature bottling, Santa Teresa 1796, is a bold and elegant spirit aged in bourbon oak barrels using the solera method. To learn more about the brand and how it’s celebrating this momentous birthday, we caught up with Alberto Vollmer.

Santa Teresa 1796 Hacienda

Santa Teresa 1796 Hacienda

Tell us about what’s new at Santa Teresa Rum.

Nancy Duarte, who has been with the Santa Teresa family for 31 years, recently received the title of Master Distiller, the first female and fifth distiller in 225 years of our history.  Nancy leads the total process of quality, development, and formulation of liquids and innovations within the production process for the brand. She also oversees new products for the company portfolio. We are proud to see Nancy step into this role; her longstanding knowledge of the process and brand is invaluable to our growth.

In the US, we recently launched a new label program where consumers can add their personalized touch upon purchasing their bottle of Santa Teresa 1796. Our bottle label pays homage to the Hacienda Santa Teresa and the brand’s storied history, featuring a depiction of the brand’s home in Venezuela. Allowing people to take gifting and cocktail-making moments to new heights this season and beyond, the personalized label program is available HERE.

Santa Teresa 1796

Santa Teresa 1796

Talk to us about Santa Teresa’s 225th Anniversary. How will the team celebrate?

This year we celebrate 225 years since Hacienda Santa Teresa was founded. We’re proud that for 225 years, the Hacienda Santa Teresa has mastered rum techniques, and pioneered unexpected methods, turning the brand into Venezuela’s top rum producer. All of this while standing strong and smiling through historic challenges and transforming our surroundings for the better.

The oldest Venezuelan producer of blended and aged rums, Santa Teresa is an independent, 5th generation family-owned company built on 225 years of tradition and unexpected thinking. We’re the third oldest rum producer in the world and have survived war, economic depression, dictatorships, land invasions and the threat of nationalization, and yet we’ve continued to thrive and look forward to the next 225 years.

But today, we don’t make rum just to make rum. We’ve continued to produce our single estate rums for 225 years to fund our charitable initiatives, uniting the communities we serve. Most notably, our program Project Alcatraz rehabilitates gang members via the unexpected sport of rugby. The program gives these men second chances, turning them into craftsmen and empowering them to smile back at adversity.

Santa Teresa Hacienda Bottle waxing

Santa Teresa Hacienda Bottle waxing

Today’s rum brands are launching new expressions entering the premium category and appeal to a new generation of rum drinkers. Talk to us about this trend.

We are constantly working and researching for new possible innovations that are appealing for our super premium rum consumers as well as whisky consumers, with unique liquids. To celebrate the 225th Anniversary of the Hacienda Santa Teresa, we launched a Santa Teresa 1796 Special Edition, designed by members of Project Alcatraz. Their proposals had to show what it means for them to be Made of the Unexpected, and when asked what the inspiration for their designs was, these were some of their responses:

  • “Vision, integrity, empathy, faith, transcend”
  • “We found a small ray of light (Project Alcatraz) and it wasn’t a small ray, it was full light”
  • “Triumph, through hard work and discipline”

This Special Edition will be only available in Venezuela.

What’s the best way to enjoy Santa Teresa 1796 Rum?

Well, if it is your first time, it is always encouraged to try it neat or on the rocks so you can enjoy its rich, refined, yet unexpectedly dry taste. But you can also get creative with it – Santa Teresa 1796 offers the ideal base to create a variety of super premium cocktails from spirit-forward Old Fashioneds to tropical Daiquiris- you are bound to find something that fits your taste with Santa Teresa 1796.

What should bartenders know about serving Santa Teresa?

Our Venezuelan heritage is an inextricable part of our identity. We’re the first ever Venezuelan rum brand and still family-owned. Five generations of rum-making expertise went into creating Santa Teresa 1796, which we released to mark 200 years since the founding of the Hacienda Santa Teresa.

The sugar cane and water used to make Santa Teresa come from the brand’s estate and local farms in the Aragua Valley. This terroir provides the perfect environmental conditions for aging rum, from its rich soil to its temperate climate. From fermentation through distillation, aging and blending, it all happens at our Hacienda. But it’s not just our terroir and history that forms our identity. We’re also pioneers in the use of a complex production process and employ the traditional Solera Method to create Santa Teresa 1796. This artisanal method processes blends of rums aged between 4 to 35 years to form a rum with a smooth, dry and balanced profile.

Santa Teresa 1796 has been recognized as the best crafted rum in the world and holds more than 45 international accolades from the most prestigious competitions, such as the International Wine and Spirits Competition, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and the USA Spirits Ratings.

Its wide range of tasting notes include honey, prunes, nuts, dark chocolate, prunes, leather, tobacco and hints of pepper.

Where do you see the premium rum segment headed within the spirits industry?

Across spirits categories, people are adopting the “less, but better” mantra. They’re trading up and looking for ways to elevate the drinking occasion. The premiumization trend first impacted categories such as tequila and whisky, with rum long besieged by a reputation as a spirit best relegated to simple and overly sweet beach cocktails. The truth is that rum has always had craftsmanship and provenance that equaled other aged, old-world spirits like Single Malt Whisky or Cognac – people just weren’t aware of it.

A new generation of drinkers are searching for super-premium experiences, eager to explore innovative and luxury spirits in categories they aren’t as familiar with. As a result, they’ve discovered the subtlety and complexity of super-premium dark rums like Santa Teresa 1796, which has a flavor palette more akin to scotch and whisky than the typical rum.

The premiumization movement is apropos for Santa Teresa 1796, as it is a rum brand with centuries of savoir-faire and a fascinating heritage. Anybody who appreciates a well-crafted spirit will appreciate the layered richness that comes from the complex Solera Method, as well as the unexpectedly dry finish of Santa Teresa 1796.
