Chillin’ with Tye White

By | Mixology News

Detroit Michigan native and actor Tye White is living proof of the power of passion. Throughout his early years, his fondness for acting was very apparent. He participated in school productions, but was unable to fully devote himself to the performing arts because his family didn’t support it as career path. Initially, White succumbed to their doubts and decided to settle into the business field.

After graduating from Brother Rice High School, he followed a path similar to his father’s, and pursued a degree in economics from the University of Michigan.

During his studies, he couldn’t bear to dismiss his gut feeling that spoke so clear to him. Upon building up the courage to go against his father’s wishes, he began to give in to his true calling in theater. It wasn’t something that happened overnight, as he still did end up entering the investment world as a business banker for Chase Bank. But in due time, he caved in and left the job for Los Angeles. In LA, he perfected his craft and made amends with his father. White has never looked back, appearing in short films and television series.

White can be seen across a multitude of famous productions including NCIS: Los Angeles, American Auto, NBA 2K (Voice Actor), Pretty Little Liars, and many more! Chilled chats with Tye about his mean Old Fashioned making and getting fired from his first bartending gig!!

Tell us about the projects you are working on.

Right now I’m finishing up the second season on American Auto. We are 12 episodes into filming our 13 episode second season. As soon as that’s over I’m taking about two weeks off, then jumping right into production on a project I’m developing with my writing partner.

With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your downtime?

My therapy is the gym and especially boxing. So my daily routine has to incorporate that somehow. I’m a homebody, I like to spend as much time as possible with my family.

When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

I guess it depends on who I’m dining with. For instance, with my wife we tend to eat Italian. With my best friend and brother it is ALWAYS a steakhouse.

What types of dishes do you typically order?

My go to is either sushi or steak.

Any favorite bars?

Anything with a rooftop in LA. An LA summer bar is tough to beat. Watching that sunset with a drink is the best!

What drinks do you order when out?

I used to be a whiskey guy. But as of recent, I’ve transitioned to anejo tequila on the rocks. It’s very smooth and is a nice drink at the end of a long day.

Do you prepare drinks at home?

I make a mean Old Fashioned. I was the worst bartender in Los Angeles. A title I confidently held. I was slow and the only drink I was good at making was the one that I enjoyed.

Tell us about your home bar. What is it stocked with?

I have a lot of wine. More reds than whites. At some point when I can have a house big enough I would love one of those classic wine cellars where I have vintage wines.

Have you ever been a bartender?

I was a bartender but as I mentioned I wasn’t very good. I got fired from every bartender job I ever had. I somehow made good tips still.

If you could share a drink with anyone, who would it be?

Easy. Kobe Bryant. I was his biggest fan. I am his biggest fan. My saved tab on Instagram is full of his quotes and interviews. A lot of his evolution as a player, person, father, husband, and man still inspires to this day.

2 Must Mix Classic Cocktails made with Calvados

By | Mixology News

In the world of brandies, an underdog is slowly stealing the show. Its name is Calvados.

Swooping in from Normandy, this brandy isn’t like its Armagnac or Cognac cousins. While its Southern French family members grab most of the spotlight, Calvados is about to take hold of a part of the limelight. “Calvados is one of the three iconic brandies of the world, alongside Cognac and Armagnac. Yet, of the three, it is probably the most misunderstood by Americans,” notes Daniel Cooney, co-owner of Heavenly Spirits.

Why is it misunderstood? Well, a few reasons. Among the three brandy categories, Calvados is the most different. First, it’s from Northern France—Armagnac and Cognac hail from the Southwest. Second, and most important, Calvados is solely made from apples.

To get nittier and grittier, the Calvados appellation has three official areas—Calvados Pays d’Auge, Calvados Domfrontais, and Calvados. Each area has its 500 years of brandy-making history, along with restrictions, particularly on the amount of pear in the spirit.

It’s quite impressive how the Normands took cider and boozed it up a notch—no surprise there, Normandy is renowned for its cider. Even Claque-Pepin makes both apple and pear ciders.

Getting down to flavor, Calvados lends the roundness and freshness of apples and pears that bartenders adore in cocktails. This spirit’s intensity can vary, just like other brandies, Calvados can be aged.

The versatility of Calvados is undeniable. This brandy’s authentic flavors are landing on cocktail menus across the nation, stirring up the brandy norm. And the more Calvados gains momentum, the more this incredible spirit is savored. “There are a lot of new and exciting developments that should help, including single cask offerings, barrel finishes, longer aging, and even some rare vintage releases,” Cooney tells us.

As Calvados moves out of the shadows of its cognac cousins and into the limelight, we’re on track to see how this spirit soars.

Check out these classic cocktails made with calvados.

When I was older, I moved to Arizona, a place magical in its own way. The intoxicating scent of citrus blossoms filling the air everywhere you go. It must be what perfumes heaven. Citrus in such abundance you couldn’t give it away. The desert was also the only place I’ve ever been successful in growing lavender, it’s fragrant blossoms just as potent as those of the lemon trees. I used to sit outside late at night and watch the stars while basking in its heady bouquet.

Taste and scent have such a strong memory connection, and with this cocktail I wanted to capture the essence of flavors and aromas that were particularly meaningful to me personally, just all in one glass!

I’ve never personally had a green thumb, but if there’s one plant anyone can cultivate and keep alive in the south, it’s aloe. When I tasted the clean, floral flavors of Silks Irish Dry Gin, I knew I wanted to craft a refreshing drink that wouldn’t overpower the delicate botanicals already present in the spirit and aloe was the perfect carrier to allow those flavors to bloom. I then chose to highlight some of the less prevalent botanicals used to make the gin, chamomile, and sage, for their calming effects and intense aromatics. Honey is used as a sweetener as a nod to the honey used in the gin’s production as well. To honor the distillery’s commitment to sustainability, the garnishes came from ingredients already being used in the drink to use every part of the fruit and herb. The butterfly pea flower tea float on top of the drink mimics the ombre design of the Silks gin bottle.

  • 1 oz. aloe water
  • ½ oz. fresh lemon juice
  • ½ oz. chamomile honey syrup
  • ½ oz. elderflower liqueur
  • 5-6 fresh sage leaves
  • ½ oz. butterfly pea flower tea float

Preparation: Heat water to a boil. In one mug, brew 1/2 cup hot water with one bag of chamomile tea. In another mug, brew 1/2 cup hot water with 1 tablespoon dried butterfly pea flowers. Strain each after 5 minutes. Reserve and chill butterfly pea flower tea. Mix chamomile tea with 1/2 cup honey while hot, chill to serve. Using a knife and cutting board, cut a few thin slices from the midsection of a lemon and reserve for garnish. Squeeze the remaining lemon and add 1/2 oz lemon juice into a mixing tin with 5-6 of the lower leaves from a sprig of fresh sage. Then add 1/2 oz chamomile honey syrup, 1 oz aloe water (store bought is perfect), 1/2 oz elderflower liqueur, 1 1/2 oz Silks Irish Dry Gin, and ice to shake. Behind the Cocktail: As You Wish, The Princess Bride-Inspired Cocktail

By | Mixology News

The iconic film, The Princess Bride, turns 35 this year…Inconceivable!

Head Bartender Alex Barbatsis of The Whistler has created a cocktail inspired by the 1987 cult classic. “I set out to make a drinking experience with enough whimsy to rival that of the movie, while still having a distinct character arc as you sip. The violet liqueur gives a big aromatic bouquet on top and then mixes into the cocktail as you drink it, changing the color and the flavor from grassy and tropical to floral and bright,” says Alex. Check out the recipe below!

W-AS YOU WISH

As You Wish

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz Mezcal
  • 1/2 oz Sotol
  • 1/2 oz Benedictine Honey Liqueur
  • 3/4 oz Lemon
  • 1/2 oz Orgeat
  • .3 oz Creme de Violette

Preparation: Add all ingredients besides creme de violette to Collins glass and fill with crushed ice. Swizzle until well combined and float the creme de violette on top.

Rachel Wright

Buffalo, NY

Like the Silks family, Buffalo and the surrounding area of New York State are covered in orchards. It is a fall and winter tradition to serve mulled cider from local orchards to warm the body and soul. Likewise, as we transition into spring, dandelion weeds can be found everywhere throughout the city and more rural areas alike. “After Apple-Picking” a tongue in cheek Frost reference incorporates a traditional mulled apple cider with a twist. Highlighting the sour and slightly sweet flavor of apple blossoms in Silk Gin, I juiced fresh green apples as opposed to using the typical golden delicious or red delicious varieties in mulling cider.

Although dandelion greens are plentiful within my area, it is not recommended they be foraged in an urban setting for risk of pesticide. However, dandelion green tea can easily be obtained from any grocery store for around $5 USD. Dandelions have a slightly bitter and earthy flavor which will balance well against the bright citrus notes of Silk gin. Lastly, I utilized, Cocchi Americano as a modifier to sustain the uphold the honey and bright citrus notes of the Silk Gin and Regan’s Bitters to highlight the orange and dry coriander notes and finally garnished with sage to highlight some of the herbaceousness of the gin.

After Apple Picking

After Apple Picking

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz. Silks Dry Irish Gin
  • 3/4 oz. Cocchi Americano
  • 2 dashes Regan’s bitters
  • 1 1/2 oz. Green Apple Juice*
  •
0.6 oz. Dandelion Syrup**

Preparation: In a shaking tin, add ingredients. Shake for 15-20 seconds with ice, until seal is created, and tin feels cold. Double strain with a traditional hawthorn strainer and through a fine mesh strainer to ensure that all ice chips are removed. Serve in small punch glass or teacup. Take a quarter slice of apple and sprig of fresh sage and skewer on to your cocktail with a pick…no pick? Just place on top.

*Green Apple Juice: If you have a juice extractor you can easily juice the entire apple minus the core to create this. If you do not, you can take one whole sliced apple and muddle into the cocktail shaker to release the flavors of the apple.

**Dandelion Syrup: Take 1 cup water and 1 cup granulated sugar and place on to a medium saucepan on medium heat. Carefully remove strings of 4 dandelion tea bags being careful not to break them and place with water and sugar in pan. Let simmer on medium heat for 10 minutes, then remove the tea bags, take off heat and let cool.

This cocktail takes inspiration from the mother-daughter duo tending the hives of honeybees pollinating the orchards from which the gin’s botanicals are born, the stampeding horses traveling through the nearby racetrack at lightning speed, and the sage-like wisdom required to curate a family-owned legacy celebrating the history of the land surrounding their distillery.

The refreshing, bright flavor notes of Silks Irish Dry Gin had this phrase ringing through my ears as the flavors danced across my palate: “This is a journey, where like-minded companions travel along.” With ingredients acting as a nod to the honeybees, fruit orchards and on-site florals, I strived to create a cocktail that embodied the companionship of complimentary flavors traveling together and uplifting the Silks spirit. This signature garden-to-glass cocktail pays homage to the lands surrounding the Boann Distillery.

Silks Traveling Sage

Silks Traveling Sage

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Silks Irish Dry Gin
  • 1 oz Lemon Juice
  •
3/4 oz Honey-Peppercorn Syrup
  •
13 Blueberries
  •
4 Sage Leaves
2 drops
  • Lavender Bitters
Club soda

Preparation: Add ten blueberries and the honey-peppercorn syrup* to a mixing glass and muddle together. Then, add gin, lemon juice, and two sage leaves. Add ice and shake well. Double strain over ice into a Collins glass. Top off with club soda. Garnish with three blueberries and two additional sage leaves. *Honey-Peppercorn Syrup: Combine one cup of honey, one cup of water, and 3 tablespoons of black peppercorns over medium-high heat. Stir until the honey fully combines with the water. Once the mixture comes to a boil, lower the heat, and let it simmer for five minutes. Then, take it off the heat and let it cool completely. Strain into another container and discard the peppercorns.

You don’t have to do the harvesting; aloe water can be purchased at most major grocery stores in the juice aisle. I then chose to highlight some of the less prevalent botanicals used to make the gin, chamomile, and sage, for their calming effects and intense aromatics.

Honey is used as a sweetener as a nod to the honey used in the gin’s production as well. Elderflower liqueur is readily available in most liquor stores and is used to amplify the intensity of one of the core botanicals harvested at the distillery for the gin. To honor the distillery’s commitment to sustainability, the garnishes came from ingredients already being used in the drink to use every part of the fruit and herb. The butterfly pea flower tea float on top of the drink mimics the ombre design of the Silks gin bottle. The tea itself will react with the citrus in the drink, turning from blue to purple to magenta, as the clear bottle turns to the white and purple label and blue bottom. The drink is meant to reflect the values of the distillery, be a visual reference to the brand, and include my own regional Florida twist using aloe as a blank canvas for flavor.

2 Must Mix Cocktails Made with Buchanan’s Pineapple Scotch

By | Mixology News

Buchanan’s Pineapple is the first offering from the House of Buchanan’s to feature the signature smoothness of Scotch Whisky with the vibrant taste of pineapple.

Perfect for elevating vibras—Buchanan’s Pineapple is delicious served in a shot glass with Chamoy and chili-lime seasoning or simply combined with mineral water like in The Piña Fizz. It also mixes perfectly in cocktails like a riff on the popular piña colada, but with whisky, called the Bucha Colada.

“I am thrilled to be back at Bacardi and to work with the incredibly talented team who has been building and leading the brand. Together, I know we will build Bacardi’s next great story,” shares Roberto.

Roberto takes on an open role following the promotion of Ned Duggan to Global Chief Marketing Officer of Bacardi and President of Bacardi Global Brands Limited. Roberto reports to Ned and joins the Marketing Leadership Team. He will be based in Bermuda, pending authorization by the Bermuda Department of Immigration.

“In addition to being a brilliant marketer, Roberto understands the value of consumer mindsets, and equally important, he gets Bacardi,” says Ned Duggan. “He knows our people, our culture and brings a strong track record of collaborating that is key to continue unlocking even greater growth for the brand across the globe.”

Originally from Mexico, Roberto is fluent in Spanish, a father of four girls and a multi-awarded marketer, most recently, “Best Regional Marketer in Latin America” by Adlatina, an AdAge partner. Roberto will be based between the brand’s offices in Miami, Florida and global headquarters in Bermuda.
