Happy World Shochu Day! Celebrate with this cocktail from Martiny’s. Cheers!

Maia

Martiny’s (New York, New York)

Created by Takuma Watanabe, Owner of Martiny’s

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. iichiko Saiten
  • 2 oz. Fresh Pineapple Juice
  • 0.5 oz. Yuzu
  • 0.5 oz. Fresh Basil Syrup

Preparation: Add all ingredients to a shaker tin, shake, then pour into a coupe glass with ice. Garnish with a basil leaf.

On the nose, iichiko Saiten is redolent with aromas of honeydew melon, white grape, pickled watermelon rind and kabosu citrus. There are also hints of soy, white pepper and rich barley notes.

On the palate, iichiko Saiten has a strong start and a long finish. It exudes rich umami notes of jasmine tea, white peach, minerals and earth with some citrus and a saline finish that beckons another sip. Its complex flavors offer exciting options for mixing in cocktails.

SEO Hed: Courvoisier Launches Limited Edition VSOP Bottle Designed by Yinka Ilori

By | Mixology News

Maison Courvoisier, the Most Awarded Cognac House*, proudly announces the return of British Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori as its “Ambassador of Joy,” a role created exclusively for the artist, designer and storyteller.

Ilori returns for a second year to introduce a limited-edition Courvoisier VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) bottle design inspired by the joy of a summer’s day in Jarnac, France, the home of Courvoisier.

Internationally known for his bold, vibrant designs, Maison Courvoisier first commissioned Ilori in 2022 to lead the cognac house on a journey to honor its heritage and embrace the future. This campaign included the launch of a new Courvoisier identity centered around the French concept of “joie de vivre” – meaning to savor life’s true pleasures. Drawing inspiration from the Maison’s French roots and the essence of “joie de vivre,” Ilori created a series of immersive events that brought to life the beauty of summer in Courvoisier’s home of Jarnac, France.

“I am delighted to collaborate with Courvoisier once again in my role as ‘Ambassador of Joy,’” said Ilori.

“As an artist and designer, my work aims to spread happiness, foster togetherness, and create joyful memories – values that Courvoisier also champions. In designing this new bottle, my goal was to craft something that evokes the spirit of celebration. Whether appreciating art or relishing the flavors of Courvoisier with good company, I hope my vibrant designs inspire blissful moments and bring more joy into people’s lives.”

Ilori’s limited edition VSOP bottle is available now as a UK exclusive at luxury retailer Selfridges London and on Selfridges.com. The bottle will retail in the U.K. at £200.00. Nearly 1,000 bottles will be allocated globally with additional releases in the U.S, Canada and France to follow in October 2023.

For a signature serve, Courvoisier Gala is a recommended choice. This refreshing cocktail calls for 1.75 parts Courvoisier VSOP and 4 parts Fever-Tree Sicilian Lemon. Build all ingredients over ice in a highball glass and lightly stir. Garnish with a lemon wheel and serve.

Behind the Bottle: The Story of Filmland Spirits

By | Mixology News

Filmland Spirits announces the debut of two new American Whiskeys crafted to expand its award-winning portfolio. Town at the End of Tomorrow, a 9-year-old Kentucky Bourbon, and the long-awaited Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut.

Filmland Spirits is built on the belief that within every bottle of whiskey exists an immersive story worth being told. Stationed in LA, their team combines an enthusiasm for whiskey, passion for movies, and dedication to storytelling to create a portfolio of award-winning small batch bourbon and whiskies.

Over the last several years, their experts have sampled some of the finest whiskey across the United States. Their meticulously selected barrels are transported to Kentucky, where they are then aged, blended, finished, and bottled.
Blowing away today’s packaging standard, Filmland’s finished product exhibits their original B-Movie concepts, complete with monsters, robots, and over-the-top plots. Rivaling the outlandish nature of these retro-inspired films is the lineup of delicious whiskies they’re paired with. Each of which boasts a Gold Medal, attesting to the liquid’s classy and entertaining qualities.

“This is a serious bourbon portfolio created by a team that don’t take themselves too seriously, but who are introducing the world of Bourbon to a whole new audience.”

Here are the award-winning Cinematic Sippers:

Moonlight Mayhem! Small Batch Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Delicious and sweet with cherry and citrus on the nose, vanilla and caramel on the tongue and an intricate finish of toffee and toasted oak. Enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, this smooth blend will delight werewolves and humans alike.

Moonlight Mayhem! Extended Cut Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey

Cherries and chocolate on the nose and tongue with a spectacularly creamy mouthfeel and an endless finish of cacao, leather, and applewood. Enjoyed neat, or with a drop of water.

Ryes of the Robots! Small Batch Straight Rye Whiskey

Complex and spicy with cinnamon and cloves on the nose, mint and pepper on the tongue and a long, chocolatey finish with hints of oak. Enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail.

Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut

The long-awaited cask strength version of the fan favorite Ryes of the Robots. Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut is aged for five years in American White Oak, bottled at cask strength 108 Proof (54% ABV) and features a mash of 95% Rye with 5% Malted Barley in a supporting role.  Like any movie that receives the extended cut treatment, Ryes of the Robots Extended Cut features deleted scenes that continue the tale of bartender turned hero Courtney Winters as she seeks to defend the art of craft cocktail making from an army of robotic bartenders.

Watch the trailer here.

Town at the End of Tomorrow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

In keeping with the Filmland Spirits creative process, Town at the End of Tomorrow was inspired by their original B-movie concept. This story tells the tale of a grim future overshadowed by bourbon shortages and the outlawing of spirits older than two years. New Bardstown is now the center of the whiskey universe and home to distillers Connor and Emerald Cooper who long for the finely aged bourbons of years gone by. Together they travel back through time to the birth of America’s native spirit – where they must confront their teetotaling forefather Judge Barker in an epic battle for the bourbon ages.

HEIDI’S BLACK MAGIC-RITA

Preparation: In a shaker combine PATRÓN EL ALTO, blackberry syrup, lime juice, ice and shake. Strain and pour over ice in a rocks glass with a black salt rim. Top with two drops of fire water tincture and a sugar spider web garnish.

Blackberry Syrup*

In a small saucepan, mix 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water with 5 large blackberries. Simmer and let the sugar melt. Once the blackberries are soft, muddle them with the back of a spoon. Strain through a fine mesh strainer and let cool.

Get Spooky with These 6 Colorado-Based Halloween Beers

By | Mixology News

It’s hard to believe it, but Halloween is officially here. It’s the one day of the year where nobody will look at you sideways for dressing up like a ghost, goblin, witch, or Ted Lasso and showing up to a meeting at work.

And on top of being a day to wear any mask or costume you like, it’s also a day for stuffing your face with sugary candy and rich chocolate.

And while that’s all well and good, what we really care about is the Halloween-themed beer. And there are few states better at brewing beer than Colorado. Home to some of the most well-known and well-respected breweries in the country, the state is dotted with more than 400 breweries.

When it comes to seasonal beers from the Rocky Mountain State, we’re talking about chocolate-forward beers, beers flavored to taste like iconic candy, and beers that are just tasty and have spooky, Halloween-themed names. The best part? There are countless delicious, flavorful Halloween-centric beers on the market waiting to be discovered and imbibed on October 31st. Keep scrolling to see six of our favorites from Colorado-based breweries.

Bruz Beers – Hellraiser

If you’re a fan of scary movies, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve seen the film ‘Hellraiser’ or one of its eleven (yes, you read that right) sequels. Bruz Beers recently launched a Halloween-themed Belgian-style golden strong ale called Hellraiser. This potent, 10% ABV warming beer is known for its palate of bready malts, candied orange peel, floral, herbal hops, and a spicy finish.

LUKI Brewery – 217 Blood Orange Double IPA

There’s always been something spooky about the blood orange. Obviously, it gets its name because of its blood-like color, but it’s kind of a creepy citrus fruit. LUKI Brewery agrees with us. That’s why it recently launched a Halloween-centric beer called 217 Blood Orange Double IPA. The name is a reference to room 217 (switched to room 237 for the movie for some reason) in the Overlook Hotel in the Stephen King novel ‘The Shining’. This 8.9% ABV IPA is hoppy and filled with bright orange flavor.

FlyteCo Brewing – P-38 Pumpkin Porter

You can’t talk about Halloween beers without mentioning a pumpkin beer or two. FlyteCo Brewing released the P-38 Pumpkin Porter on October 20th, just in time for holiday sipping. The already toasty, malty, sweet porter gets added flavor from the addition of pureed pumpkin and pumpkin spice. Now that’s the kind of warming, sweet, pumpkin-filled beer Halloween was made for.

Sky Bear Brewery & Pub – Harvest Moon

Sky Bear Brewery & Pub is located in downtown Loveland, Colorado. It’s a great place to stop in for an ever-rotating beer tap list, mouth-watering food, and cocktails. It’s also a great spot to get a pumpkin ale. Specifically, its newest offering is called Harvest Moon. This 6.4% ABV pumpkin ale is subtle on spices and pumpkin, but big on flavor. One sip and you’ll be transported to a world of roasted pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.

WeldWerks Brewing Company – Candy Corn Cheesecake Sour Ale

When it comes to well-respected Colorado breweries, you’d have a tough time finding many more beloved than Greeley, Colorado’s Weldwerks. Known for its innovative beers, one of its newest Halloween releases is its unique Candy Corn Cheesecake Sour ale. This 4.3% ABV sour ale was crafted to taste like exactly what the name suggests: candy corn cheesecake. It’s brewed with actual candy corn, cream cheese, graham crackers, vanilla, and milk sugar.

WeldWerks Brewing Company – The Nerdy Professor

The second Weldwerks beer on this list, The Nerdy Professor is a 5.2% ABV sour ale that gets its flavor from being brewed with strawberry and grape crunchy candy along with grape and strawberry puree. The result is a sour, sweet ale for the beer drinker who also still has a bit of a sweet tooth. It’s the equivalent of a box of Nerds candy in a pint glass.

We Ask Tim Jones about The Spirits and Cigars Event at Mohegan Sun

By | Mixology News

At the Clay Pipe Cigar Bar located in Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino a variety of pairings of cigars and spirits are offered right inside one of the largest gaming resorts on the east coast.

The venue offers over 200 fine cigars and a full-service, craft cocktail bar. The Annual Spirits and Cigars Event at Clay Pipe Cigar Bar is a place where cigar lovers come to enjoy its well-stocked cigar store and lounge. We ask General Manager Tim Jones to tell us more.

Talk to us about the Spirits and Cigars event.

The Spirits and Cigars event at Clay Pipe Cigar Bar is an evening where cigar connoisseurs can come to Mohegan Sun and enjoy an atmosphere of sophistication and luxury. This year, we had some standout drink specials and guests enjoyed fine spirit tastings courtesy of Berkshire Mountain Distillers. That said, what truly sets this event apart is our cigar experience. Whether you’re going for one of the specially infused cigars or handpicking one of Clay Pipe’s incredible collection to find that perfect pair with your drink, there’s something for everyone.

What inspired the event.

One of our goals has been to work with and highlight the many fantastic brands available throughout the region. I was introduced to Michael Kowalski of the Berkshire Mountain Distillers team, and we quickly began discussing ideas for an event that could showcase their extensive spirit lineup, while creating a fun and unique experience for our Mohegan Sun guests. We both felt their rum and many whiskies would be perfect to sip alongside a cigar, and the pairing event seemed to be a perfect fit for our Clay Pipe Cigar Bar venue.

What are some of the key takeaways and successes of this event?

Ultimately, the night was a success, and we were able to showcase some exceptional new spirits to our cigar bar guests, who had a great time mixing and matching their whiskies and cigars. We’ve had tons of positive feedback, and we look forward to working with Berkshire Mountain Distillers and other regional brands to continue to spotlight the many outstanding options available to us here at Mohegan Sun.

What type of experience should guests expect to have?

The Spirits and Cigars event at our Clay Pipe Cigar Bar isn’t just about tasting; it’s about reveling in the artistry of life’s most exquisite pleasures. At Mohegan Sun, we’ve always believed in creating moments of joy and indulgence, and this event encapsulates that. With the guidance of our top-tier mixologists and cigar experts, every guest is in for an immersive experience. And it’s not just about the spirits and cigars – the conversations, the surprise giveaways and those little nuggets of knowledge shared about the craft make the evening truly memorable. If you want an evening that’s been crafted just for you, this is where you want to be.
