Celebrate Spicy Margarita Week with Tanteo Tequila

By | Mixology News

Tanteo Tequila—the New York-based, leading producer of ultra-premium, 100 percent agave tequilas and pioneer of spicy tequila, has announced the upcoming celebration of SPICY MARGARITA WEEK during January 22-28, the brand will donate $1 for every spicy Margarita with Tanteo Tequila sold to select charities across the nation.

With the launch of the 2024 SPICY MARGARITA WEEK, Tanteo Tequila aims to unite people across the country with the fan-favorite cocktail while sharing the importance and passion for sustainability efforts that make a significant difference.

“We’re excited to host a week of spicy Margaritas that make communities more sustainable for future generations,” says Neil Grosscup, CEO. “Through Spicy Margarita Week, we hope to have a lot of fun while giving back.”

Originally inspired by National Spicy Margarita Day on January 26, created in honor of late founder Jonathan Rojewski’s birthday, Tanteo Tequila is thrilled to invite individuals for a week-long celebration to indulge in their unique tequila flavors while making a positive impact in their local communities.

Tanteo Tequila takes great pride in sourcing agave from the fertile La Cienega region in Mexico, strategically located between the highlands and lowlands regions of tequila country. The agaves are meticulously handpicked at the peak of maturity and then undergo a traditional, small-batch production process. They are traditionally produced in brick ovens and double-distilled to ensure the highest quality.

But what sets Tanteo apart is their dedication to infusing freshly picked peppers into their, overproof blanco tequila. Carefully considering the age and heat intensity of the peppers, Tanteo creates a truly unique and spicy tequila. From the moment the agave is grown to the final pour, every detail is meticulously honored, resulting in an exceptional tequila that stands out from the rest.

To participate in SPICY MARGARITA WEEK, individuals are encouraged to visit their favorite local bars and restaurants and order select cocktails and Margaritas made with Tanteo Tequila.

To learn more about SPICY MARGARITA WEEK and to view a list of participating establishments, please visit Tanteo Tequila’s website at www.tanteotequila.com.

Introducing Tequila Don Julio Alma Miel

By | Mixology News

Introducing Tequila Don Julio Alma Miel—an exceptional liquid that pays homage to the agave plant—the heart and soul of tequila—as it blends Blanco tequila distilled with oven-roasted agave honey and an Añejo tequila that has been aged for at least 14 months and finished in Crémant du Limoux wine casks from the Limoux region of France.

The result is an extraordinary tequila that holds sweet notes of honey, spiced orchard fruit, creamy caramel, and rich roasted agave.

Beautifully packaged in a sleek, tall bottle, Tequila Don Julio Alma Miel is best enjoyed on the rocks garnished with an orange rind or neat.

Additionally, over the next few months a collaboration with Mexican Musician, Christian Nodal, will be rolling out. Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey Announces its 2nd Annual Old Fashioned Challenge

By | Mixology News

UNCLE NEAREST Announces its 2nd Annual OLD FASHIONED CHALLENGE to raise $1.4 Million for historically underfunded Black colleges and universities.

From MLK Jr. Day Through Juneteenth, the Whiskey Company Will Work with Restaurant, Bar, and Retail Partners Across the Country to Fundraise

Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, the top-selling Black-owned spirits brand in the world, has announced the launch of its second annual HBCU Old Fashioned Challenge, a nationwide initiative to raise funds for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This year’s challenge will see the company work to raise $1.4 million, amounting to one full in-state tuition scholarship per accredited HBCU. The initiative kicked off on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Monday, January 15) and this year it will run through Juneteenth (Tuesday, June 19).

“Before we sold our first bottle of Uncle Nearest, we were already funding the college education of Nearest Green’s descendants,” shares Fawn Weaver, Founder and CEO of Uncle Nearest. “Every semester, writing those checks brought me immense joy, knowing the significant impact they would have on each student’s life. This same feeling resurfaced when I began writing tuition checks to HBCUs for our Old Fashioned Challenge. It’s an honor, and my hope is that we can continue this tradition annually with the checks growing larger as the Uncle Nearest whiskey family expands.”

In 2023, it was widely reported that federal officials told 16 states that they have been underfunding their HBCUs by nearly $13 billion over the past 30 years, according to an analysis from the U.S. Department of Education.

Uncle Nearest’s home state of Tennessee underfunded its school’s land grants the most, according to the report. Uncle Nearest’s goal, through the Old Fashioned Challenge, is to not only raise money for these institutions but to shine a light on how HBCUs, which make up less than 3% of colleges, have a proven record of removing barriers to degree completion and postgraduate success, with their graduates making up 50 percent of Black doctors and Black attorneys, 40 percent of Black engineers and Black members of Congress, and 80 percent of Black judges.

“Uncle Nearest gives a lot, with ‘pulling as we climb’ being part of our DNA right from the start,” says Victoria Eady Butler, great-great-granddaughter of Nearest Green and four-time Master Blender of the Year.

“But this challenge is something special, ’cause we’re inviting our whiskey family to join us in giving back. Seeing the excitement from them, and our thousands of retail, restaurant, bar, hotel, and airline partners across the country even before this year’s challenge kicked off, well, that lets me know we’ve started something extraordinary. To our whiskey family and partners everywhere, thank y’all!”

Now through June 19, 2024, the public can participate in the Uncle Nearest HBCU Old Fashioned Challenge by:

• Ordering an Uncle Nearest Old Fashioned at participating bars and restaurants, where one dollar will be donated per cocktail ordered

• Purchasing any bottle of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey at participating online and brick-and-mortar retail stores, where one dollar will be donated per bottle purchased

• Purchasing an Old Fashioned Bundle through ReserveBar, where two dollars will be donated for every bundle purchased

• Submitting a photo of a homemade Uncle Nearest Old Fashioned to www.oldfashionedcocktail.com, where one dollar will be donated per entry*

For more information on the HBCU Old Fashioned Challenge, including a list of participating bars, restaurants, and retailers, and to follow along on the road to $1.4 million raised, please visit www.oldfashionedcocktail.com. *Limited to one entry per email

Check Out The Biggest Winter Drink Trend Predictions from Monin + Cocktail Recipes Using Them!

By | Mixology News

This past fall, we saw the continued transformation of pumpkin spice, and evolutions of spice usage in general.

Decadence and notes of nostalgia also took the stage, giving us a taste of what we would see expanded upon throughout the season.

The experts at Monin have identified trends that we should expect to see increased visibility across the industry this season, as well as crafted recipes implementing these trends!

Winter beverage trends predicted by Monin

Highlighting functional properties of seasonal ingredients:

Winter favorites, like nutmeg, have many health benefits. It’s anti-inflammatory, contains powerful antioxidants, and more. This can be an enticing addition to your cocktails during cold and flu season!

Utilizing winter favorites to add new textures:

Look to seasonal ingredients and favorites — such as hazelnut and cranberry — for a simple way to incorporate new texture into a dish!

Spiced makes everything nice:

Warm, seasonal spices are seen all throughout the industry in the colder months. Turmeric has grown +44% over the past four years and the sought-after spice expected to grow an additional +55% though 2026!

Bold winter citrus cravings:

Blood orange, kumquat, clementine, and grapefruit are expected to be seen on menus this season. Citrus flavors can be enhanced by classic and seasonal spices! For example, oranges pair amazingly with cinnamon and cloves, and grapefruits go well with ginger and cardamom.

Chillin’ With Actress, Comedian and Model CJ Franco

By | Mixology News

Alluring actress, comedian, and model CJ Franco was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California. CJ has had a remarkable career as a comedian as she continues to grow her stage presence with each of her bookings.

She has performed across the country at some of the most popular comedy clubs including the Hollywood Improv, the Cobbs Comedy Club, Off the Hook Comedy Club, Improv Comedy Theatre Miami, the Hollywood Comedy as well as the Stand NYC, to name a few, and has performed alongside other comedic performers including Jeremy Piven, Pablo Francisco, Aivy Cordova, Jiaoying Summers, and Fumi Abe.

When CJ was younger, she was bullied for “looking different,” and she became shy around others. When CJ’S father came out as a gay man to his family, CJ got the courage to start defending him when the word spread. After high school, CJ moved to Los Angeles where she decided to pursue cosmetology, but after landing a job at a Beverly Hills hair salon, she felt unfulfilled.

Having been inspired to live her best life and take more risks after the passing of her best friend from cancer when she was 18, CJ began to explore other career paths which lead to her modeling career and would eventually take her to the stage for her comedy. CJ appeared on the reality show “FBOY Island” in 2021. When she is not prepping for upcoming shows, CJ enjoys Pilates, eating clean and vegan, and spending time with her fiancé, Len Wiseman.

Tell us about the projects you are working on.

I’ve got a new show coming out on Amazon prime that is a hilarious trainwreck hosted by Daniel Tosh! The strike is still going so I can’t get into details on that project quite yet. With all this down time I have been doing some local stand-up shows and toying with the idea of putting out a book with a touring standup group I work with called Models of Comedy.

With your busy schedule, what do you like to do with your downtime?

Animals have always been a passion of mine! I found a baby squirrel in the street a few weeks back during rush hour traffic. I abandoned my car and ran out to save it from being ran over! That one baby squirrel turned into three and now I have found a new hobby of nursing orphaned squirrels back to health. The squirrels and I both love to nap and need to eat every 4 hours so it’s a match made in heaven.

When you go out to eat, where do you like to dine?

Crossroads vegan kitchen is one of my absolute favorites especially to take non vegans!

What types of dishes do you typically order?

I have a plant-based diet and I generally keep it pretty clean and healthy, but when I dine out all I generally order is a bowl of pasta paired with a glass of wine.

Any favorite bars?

Sunset marquis’ bar 1800 is one of my favorite bars. It’s tucked into a hotel (so there’s great food). The vibe is dark and fun, and you never know who you’re going to meet! The hotel has a secret recording studio which attracts legendary artists and rockstars who will occasionally give an intimate performance on piano night. In my opinion it’s one of LA’s hidden gems.

Favorite drink?

This really depends what I’m eating, I have a fondness for Mexican and really feel like my best self after one spicy Margarita (I start writing new stand-up jokes on my second).

Do you prepare drinks at home?

I’ve recently started mixing my own drinks at home and trying new recipes with vodka, passion fruit, fresh squeezed citrus, and sparkling water. I try not to go too sweet, or I’ll be paying for it the next day!

Tell us about your home bar. What is it stocked with?

I keep a VERY well stocked bar, now if only I had the skills to back it up! have a modest wine fridge stocked with variations of Prisoner wine and several bottles of gifted vintage Dom Perignon that I will 100% be regifting.

Have you ever been a bartender?

I lied on my resume back in my early twenties and convinced every one of my customers to order my specialty! A vodka cranberry with lime, alternatively I gave them the option to help me pull up cocktail recipes if their heart was set on something else. Pretty sure I gave out a lot of premium alcohol. I don’t remember being fired but my career as a bartender never launched.

If you could share a drink with anyone, who would it be?

Keanu!

In the Limelight: Apple

By | Mixology News

Our spotlight ingredient is Apple!

This winter, cocktail menus all throughout New York City are featuring an increasing amount of apples. The Big Apple, as the city is ironically nicknamed, is seeing a renaissance of classic cocktails like whiskey sours, martinis, and highballs. By adding creative variations centered upon apples, tastemakers are revitalizing these beloved classics. Apples provide a variety of tastes to the drink whether they are sweet, sour, or a delicious combination of both. Certain varieties have faint notes of cinnamon spice, while others have an aromatic character with notes of honey. Apples have a very wide variety of taste impacts that they may provide to a drink, making them the perfect winter fruit!

At NYC’s beloved Dante (#1 Best Bar in North America, 2019 & 2020), Beverage Training Director Renato Tonnelli, who was recently crowned 2023 US World Class Bartender of the Year, has reimagined the 90’s classic Appletini, highlighting the seasonal flavor to create a crisp, herbaceous and elegant drink.

Other NYC spots have also added creative drinks spotlighting the apple to their menu, like Foxtail’s Honey Baked Apples, Lindens Apple Shiso Highball, and Altair’s Roasted Apples.

Here is a tempting list of four must-try apple-infused cocktails to spice up your wintertime drinking!

Dante’s Appletini is a new addition to their fall cocktail menu. Bringing forward fruity flavors with herbal notes from the Chamomile Tincture included, the sip is a crisp and delicate blend of Clarified Granny Smith Apple Juice, Beeswax Belvedere, and more.

“Originally born on the West Coast, the Appletini left a huge mark in the Northeast, especially in New York City, a.k.a. ‘The Big Apple.’ Typically, they lean very sweet or sour, or both, and we decided to take it in the direction of our other signature martinis that tend to be more aperitif-focused while still keeping those essential notes of fresh sweet and sour granny smith apple.” – Renato Tonnelli

Foxtail’s Honey Baked Apples cocktail was created with the goal of sharing a seasonal riff on a classic Saratoga. The smooth and flavorful sipper is a true comfort cocktail, combining Angel’s Envy Rye, Apple Brandy, Apple Cider, House-made Cranberry Shrub, Apple and Pimento Bitters, and Honey.

“The Honey Baked Apples is one of my favorite cocktails at Foxtail to imbibe in the fall. Essentially, Honey Baked Apples is our riff on a classic Saratoga made with Bourbon. I think Apple Brandy is very underrated and pairs perfectly with the Bourbon in this drink. We use a variety of Angel’s Envy Bourbon and other ingredients that highlight Fall flavors, like real Apple Cider and Cranberry.” – Razel Rustia

This cocktail is a refreshing and seasonal highball with effervescence. A cocktail that is altered depending on the guest’s preference, the Apple Shiso Highball is made with house-made apple shiso soda and is available with Belvedere Vodka, Herradura Reposado Tequila, or Woodinville Bourbon.

“Our Apple Shiso Highball features classic fall apple flavors with an unexpected hint of shiso. The shiso is an herb in the mint family that has an earthiness that adds great balance to this seasonal highball.” – Amanda Lee

For Altair’s Roasted Apples cocktail, apple butter, apple brandy, and whiskey are brought together to create a velvet-like whiskey sour variation. Going with the restaurant’s theme of celestial elements, this cocktail represents fire, where allspice adds depth and pepper notes while the infused butter offers true apple flavors.

“The Roasted Apple cocktail at Altair is inspired by the classic element of fire. A really unique component of this drink lies in the all-spice blend we use to highlight the whiskey. The drink has very surprising notes of depth that bloom as you sip.” – Miguel Munoz
