5 Essential Cocktails for August 2024

By | Mixology News

Each month Chilled presents you with five essential cocktails based on our National Drink Day Calendar. Don’t forget to reference it so you can prepare for the upcoming holidays.

As August unfolds and we hold onto the last bits and pieces of summer, the world of mixology presents the opportunity for adventure and discovery. Among these essential cocktails is a gem promised to elevate your drinking experience throughout the month.

These cocktails are curated to pique the interest of curious newcomers to seasoned enthusiasts. Indulge on something memorable that will linger on your palate long after your glass is empty.

Here are five cocktails to sip and savor during August.

Rosemary Aperol Spritz

There is never a better time to offer something light and refreshing than National Spritz Day on August 1. The spritz has become a fan favorite over the last few years and continues to be in the limelight. The addition of rosemary to an Aperol spritz takes the already-loved drink to the next level. Rosemary is a delicious herb that really complements the bitterness of the orange flavor.

RumChata Root Beer Float

Your search ends here if you seek something convenient and easy to have in your back pocket. A root beer float offers that nostalgic taste that patrons will be obsessed with. On National Root Beer Float Day (8/6), there isn’t anything better to serve than this RumChata libation. It’s creamy and an adult’s perfect way to celebrate. Say goodbye to vanilla ice cream and let the beloved RumChata do its thing.

Mozart S’mores Cocktail

A toasty s’more is one of the first treats that comes to mind when summer hits. Take all of those flavors and add a little booze to create the most delicious cocktail. Celebrate National S’mores Day on August 10 without having to make a campfire. It combines all of the flavors of a s’more with the smoky mezcal, chocolate, and vanilla liqueur, making it the perfect summer drink.

Bourbon Spiked Lemonade

Big-batch cocktails make for an easy pour during a busy happy hour. On August 20, celebrate National Lemonade Day with this Bourbon Spiked Lemonade. It’s a classic summer beverage that is light and tangy with an added spice from the bourbon and freshness from the mint. This cocktail allows for a lot of versatility and can be replaced with other different ingredients. If bourbon isn’t your favorite spirit, opt for vodka.

Mai Tai

Mai Tais have remained a favorite over the years for a reason. Not only are they tasty and a summer staple, but they pack a punch. Allow the timelessness of this classic cocktail to speak for itself on National Mai Tai Day (8/30). Use this recipe to serve as a base, inviting you to add your creative take.

Denisse Soto’s Latin American Cocktail Program at Chicago’s Cariño

By | Mixology News

Denisse Soto, a mixologist and mezcal expert from Mexico, is a prominent beverage consultant in Chicago.

She has developed cocktail menus for Osito’s Tap, Tacos Lotería, and Crepas Culichi in Oak Park, IL, and collaborated with brands like Espolòn Tequila and Topo Chico Hard Seltzers. In June 2021, she founded Denise Soto With Flair LLC and launched La Chingona Miks, a line of drink mixers. In 2023, she curated the cocktail program at Cariño, a new Latin American fine dining restaurant in Chicago, creating unique drinks inspired by Latin American flavors and ingredients.

Named after the Spanish term for “beloved,” Cariño is a heartfelt homage to the culture, flavors, and people across Latin America, showcasing Chef Norman Fenton’s love and connection to this vibrant region of the world. It offers a 12-16 course tasting menu highlighting regional Latin American cuisines and features a lively late-night Taco Omakase at the chef’s counter. Additionally, the restaurant offers a collection of agave-based spirits, craft beer, and a portfolio of Latin American wines curated by Jean Banchet Award-nominated sommelier Richie Ribando (Smyth, The Loyalist, Next).

Cariño’s beverage program, curated by Soto, blends Latin American gastronomy and culture with unique spirits and infusions. The ingredients in each cocktail are chosen to represent aspects of Latin American cultures. Soto explains: “For example, in ‘La Guacamaya’ we utilize wild tropical fruits to evoke the untamed atmosphere of Tulum. Combining fruits like mamey with coconut and aged charanda from Uruapan creates a harmonious blend, enhanced with a few dashes of Angostura Bitters.

The ‘Morada Sour’ embodies Peru by fermenting purple corn into a popular alcoholic drink in Peru called ‘chicha.’ A touch of tamarind acidity complements the purple chicha’s fruitiness, combined with Peruvian Pisco Quebranta and herbaceous Träkál, giving the cocktail strong aromas and rounding off the corn flavors. Another notable example is the ‘Mi Campo Margarita’, crafted with nopal cactus, green kiwi, green apple, and fresh grapefruit juice. This creates a refreshing green juice with earthy notes that work very nicely with the base spirit, Cenizo Mezcal. Rimmed with serrano chili salt, the cocktail has layers of flavor, offering a complex concoction that embodies the richness of Mexican culture.”

Soto doesn’t have a specific ingredient that she considers a “go-to,” but she loves incorporating herbs because of the layers and aromas it provides the senses. To create a successful beverage program, Soto believes it’s important to start by understanding the concept of the establishment you are working in.

“Once you grasp this, you can let the program evolve naturally. It’s also crucial to properly train your staff so they understand how each drink complements the menu and atmosphere. Developing a system for them to follow, with consistent recipes and techniques, is key. The more information you share with them about the menu structure, the more confident they’ll feel when presenting it to guests.”

Celebrate National Tequila Day with Casa Maestri

By | Mixology News

Award-winning distillery Casa Maestri creates high quality, premium tequilas under the careful watch of owner Celia V. Maestri, making a powerful statement as a woman-owned spirits company in a world mostly dominated by men and large conglomerates.

Maestri, by contrast, upholds the legacy of family ownership and tequila making traditions passed down for centuries in families just like hers. Started as a boutique family distillery in 1952 by Jose and Celia Villanueva, Casa Maestri has achieved new heights under their daughter Celia’s leadership. From an early age, Maestri had a front seat to her parents’ dedication to quality and this inspired her to take the business to the next level, doubling its sales and launching her own United States importer in Houston at the age of 28.

Since its founding, Casa Maestri’s walls have been home to many successful tequila brands but the one closest to the family’s hearts is Casa Maestri Reserva de MFM Tequila. These tequilas are crafted according to ancient methods combined with modern technology to ensure a premium spirit. The finest blue agave plants are carefully selected at peak ripeness at 6 to 8 years, then slow cooked to extract the rich sugars needed for fermentation. After fermentation, the tequila is distilled and aged in oak barrels to develop its signature complex flavors and smooth finish. The resulting spirit offers a rich, nuanced taste profile.

Designed by Celia Maestri and artist Oscar Reynoso Becerra from Guadalajara, the Casa Maestri Reserva de MFM ceramic bottles are instantly recognizable and make for great showpieces behind any bar. Reynoso Becerra is a renowned artisan for his craftsmanship and experience working with high-end ceramic pieces. While the tequilas have garnered many awards including at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and International Wine & Spirit Competition, the team is most excited about the multiple Superior Taste Awards received from the prestigious International Taste Institute in Brussels, Belgium. Overseen by a panel of more than 200 world-renowned chefs and sommeliers, this rigorous controlled tasting recognizes the finest foods and beverages from around the world.

As the once traditional world of tequila transforms with large brands expanding and celebrity backed ventures launching, Celia Maestri is proud to uphold the deepest convictions of her heritage and educate people about the culture of tequila.

“To be authentic, to love what you do, and to seek excellence above all else, always offer the best quality to the consumer,” she says.

Finally, it is worth noting that Celia is always looking for ways to innovate and grow its product offering within Casa Maestri’s flagship brand, which currently has three new products in the pipeline that promise to fascinate the palates of its consumers and the great connoisseurs of spirits: Café Tequila, 100% Maguey Espadín Mezcal and Piña-Coco flavored Tequila Cream.
