Top 10 Bourbons for a perfect Old Fashioned

By | Mixology News

With a few simple ingredients, the Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail that is said to date back to the 1860s.

Take bitters, sugar, and an orange peel and combine them with your favorite bourbon to make a smooth and mellow drink. Using different bourbons can help to create distinct and varying flavor profiles. Here is a list of 10 unique bourbons to try when crafting this timeless cocktail!

Woodford Reserve

This wonderfully balanced bourbon boasts more than 200 flavor notes, making it an excellent option for craft cocktails. The notes of toffee and caramel blend perfectly with cinnamon and spices to create a slow burning and satisfying liquor. Pair this with the sweetness of sugar and citrus, and you have a delectable recipe for an Old Fashioned.

Using a nine-year process, this brand has been able to draw out natural sugars and flavors from the charred white oak barrels that the bourbon is aged in. A woodsy aromatic profile meets a sweet and fruity taste palate, creating a well-rounded and consistently rich finish.

Bib & Tucker Small Batch

Vanilla and sandalwood come together to provide an aroma that is both luxurious and exotic. This bourbon features a velvety blend of vanilla and chestnut, which produces a beverage that is multifaceted and well-balanced.

Makers Mark

This classic staple is a great choice for a traditional Old Fashioned. Spiced honey and hazelnut flavors will complement the orange peel and bitters in the recipe beautifully. The formula has been fine-tuned and tested for over half a century, so you know it will be delicious.

Bulleit Bourbon 10-Year-Old

This bourbon has an immediate impact, coming on robust and peppery. It is quickly chased by the caramel and vanilla flavor profile coming through. The layers of citrus and cherry assist to break up the spiciness, providing a perfect choice to use in the traditional Old Fashioned.

Breckenridge

The “fresh snowmelt” that the distillery claims to use in its bourbon is an unusual element. They say that this is what leads to the full and well-rounded flavor profile. Bold aromas of cinnamon, rye spice, and vanilla carry over to the similarly robust and well-balanced taste profile. This bourbon is an excellent choice for your cocktail.

Garrison Brothers Small Batch

A drink made with this bourbon will be powerful and robust. The combination of tobacco leaf, ginger root, and barrel char results in a bold aroma. The taste is consistent, with a robust and peppery aftertaste from the tobacco and oak flavors. If you’re looking for a hearty and spicy twist on the classic Old Fashioned, this is the perfect selection.

1792 Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon

This bourbon has a complex taste profile that makes it ideal to use in an Old Fashioned. It has a buttery fragrance and a flavor profile of caramel and clove that will complement the bitters and sugar. The orange peel adds a bright citrus note to the final product.

Noble Oak Double Oak Bourbon

In contrast to the other bourbons on this list, this choice features chocolate and nuts. Caramel and aromatic vanilla are also present, contributing to the final product’s richness and refinement. This award-winning bourbon is sure to impress.

Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon

This bourbon is a rich blend of luscious plums, spices, pears, vanilla, and maple syrup. Despite its “delicate” aroma, this bourbon has a powerful and sweet flavor. The intensity of the spices stays with you for a while, giving off a gradual burn that leaves you wanting more.
