Kirsten (Kitty) Amann is the co-author of a new cocktail book called Drinking Like Ladies.
The book, which Kitty wrote with longtime friend Misty Kalkofen, is a collection of 75 stories about unsung women in history, with 75 bespoke cocktails created in their honor by working female bartenders from all over the world.

Tell us a bit about your background.
My first job was as a busser at restaurant in New Hampshire when I was 16 … I was terrible. Eventually, in college, I got the hang of waitressing, and I did that to help pay for school, and after college to supplement my tiny income while working as an editorial assistant at a publishing house. I always worked as a server and bartender to help support my other work, first in publishing, later as a publicist. The economy died in 2008 and I lost almost all of my work as a publicist, but the restaurant I was working at kept churning and burning.
I started going to all the cocktail events I could because free education and drinks are always a yes in my book. I took myself to Tales of the Cocktail and every event like it I could find. Eventually, I crossed paths with someone from Pernod Ricard looking to hire a brand ambassador for Plymouth and Beefeater gins, and I started working on the brand side. That led to a full-time job a few years later with Fernet-Branca, and after a few years there I decided to go on my own as a consultant.
Drinking Like Ladies Cocktail Book
How did your book Drinking Like Ladies come about?
In 2007, I was invited to the inaugural Ladies United for the Preservation of Endagered Cocktails (LUPEC) Boston meeting, and a whole world of cocktail history opened up to me. I wanted to learn as much as I could and started writing about cocktails then as well, in an effort to build my clips as a freelance writer. This book has been ten years in the making.
We wrote the proposal way back in 2007 at the behest of our visionary friend, then an editor, who’s now an agent. It started out as a collection similar to the writing we were doing at the time for LUPEC’s blog. This 2018 version has been truly incredible to work on, as it’s connected us to amazing women bartenders from all over the world, who are doing really interesting things in their respective markets.
What will be happening to the proceeds from book sales?
In addition to paying homage to the incredible women we’ve profiled in the book and the bartenders who made drinks in their honor, we are most excited about the opportunities it will give us to fundraise. We will be donating proceeds from the books we sell at launch parties and book parties to local women’s charities, which we plan to do all over the country, at the bars of the featured bartenders when possible.
